Fourth of July parades for Republicans only?
The 4th of July - Independence Day - is the most significant date in the history of the United States - and it is a national holiday for good reason. We - Americans - are celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence and our freedom from the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1776. Today we continue to enjoy the liberties that the 4th of July has come to symbolize in our daily lives.
Celebrations on the fourth go hand-in-hand with fireworks, picnics and....parades! Many towns, villages, and cities across the United States will host such processions in their streets. Parades that honor our nation and promote patriotism - to be enjoyed by all....or not?
A recent study by two assistant professors at Harvard University concluded that the Fourth of July parades are "right-wing." They only serve to promote patriotism, which Republicans seem to appreciate significantly more than their Democratic counterparts. The Harvard study concluded that those who attend 4th of July parades share the following traits:
- When (attending a 4th of July parade) done before the age of 18, it increases the likelihood of a youth identifying as a Republican by at least 2 percent.
- It raises the likelihood that parade watchers will vote for a Republican candidate by 4 percent.
- It boosts the likelihood a reveler will vote by about 1 percent and increases the chances they'll make a political contribution by 3 percent.
Attending 4th of July parades has been found to be of no help to Democrats, much to the chagrin of Democratic politicians who march in them. For the Dems, the parades appear to be a waste of time. The Republicans turn out in droves, celebrating patriotism and the birth of our nation. Yet, the celebration apparently falls flat - according to this study - for those of the left - or Democratic - side of the political aisle. The study even concludes that if people wish to celebrate the Fourth of July in a real super patriotic way - they should head to Republican areas.
You can read all about the study at: http://www.hks.harvard.edu/fs/dyanagi/Research/FourthOfJuly.pdf
This leads to the question, what type of parades DO benefit Dems? What types of parades do Dems and liberals support? Protests against taking away entitlements? Anti-war marches? Diversity parades? Walks in favor of socialism? Hikes for the rights of illegal aliens? Marches against private successful businesses? Save the Whales processions?
As for the Harvard study - no surprise there. When the President of the United States own wife - Michelle Obama - isn't proud of her own country - until her hubby becomes a candidate for office, what else can we expect? And when the President himself fulfills the self-appointed role as the Apologizer-In-Chief to the rest of the world - criticizing the very country he was elected to represent, well, should we be shocked? No.
It is really a sad day for America and Americans when all of us cannot be proud, patriotic, and supportive of the freedoms we have and the country we live in. To say that Fourth of July parades are "right-wing" just has to be absurd!!!
That would be like school children not including the words "under God" when they recite the Pledge of Allegiance....or not allowing firefighters to wear the American flag on their uniforms.... or not allowing the National Anthem to be sung before sporting events....or not allowing high school students to wear t-shirts with the American flag on them, cuz it might offend those celebrating Cinco De Mayo.... or not allowing Old Glory to wave...
Hmmmm......on second thought.....
Have a happy and safe 4th of July - no matter what your political persuasion! Just remember - freedom isn't free and America is STILL the greatest country on the face of the earth - no matter that a few Americans appear to disagree!!!

The next time you are down on the U.S. of A., take a trip to another country and revel in how nice we have it here. In spite of all the fractious arguments, idiotic union thugs, granola headed lefties that populate our country, I would not want to live anywhere else. HAPPY 4TH of JULY!!!!

Could it be that it is the “liberal” Democrats that are organizing the parades and fireworks?
The lazy conservatives are sitting back and enjoying the fruits of the liberals work.
Consider that I am called a “liberal” by people on this site and I have been shooting fireworks for over 20 years on the fourth in a public display for everyone to enjoy.

On the other hand, many libs/Dems - including those in political office (Harry "the war is lost" Reid comes to mind, as well as the Apologizer-In-Chief Barry O.) seem to sneer at the Tea Parties and obvious displays that many in America are demonstrating in support of America and what America stands for. Unlike Barry Obama, many of us are proud that we ARE the greatest nation on the planet. We do NOT want to be mediocre - and spread the misery ala Obama's socialism plans. And what is so funny is that - after the left has gotten done bashing America, our military, our fighting terrorism, etc. they get outraged when their "patriotism" is brought into question. You cannot have it both ways. You cannot continue to express obvious disdain for the United States and the core values, freedoms, and laws that make this a wonderful country to live in, then all of a sudden appear taken aback when called out on it - as so many libs do.
Whatever.
No matter if you are proud to be an American, or would rather join the ranks of Venezuela or Cuba, appreciate what you have here right now! And those of us who DO appreciate and love our country will NOT let it be rebuilt as Obama wants to.

"celebrations in Republican dominated counties may be more politically biased occasions that socialize children into Republicans."
Kind of sounds like indoctrination ceromonies for the party more so then celebrating independance day...lol
My staunchly democratic father never sat on the sidelines during parades, he was on his VFW float in the parade...I don't think he would have taken us along if he felt it might turn us into republicans...
like not saying under god during the pledge...
nothing wrong in my mind with honoring the original version...
like not allowing firefighters to wear flags on their uniforms...
they were not allowed to wear them in a non uniform fashion on their uniforms...to say they couldn't wear them is a lie...
like not playing the national anthem before sporting events...
According to an online fact sheet on the issue, the college noted: “Historically, playing the national anthem has not been among Goshen College’s practices because of our Christ-centered core value of compassionate peacemaking seeming to be in conflict with the anthem’s militaristic language.”

like not letting old glory wave...
For residents at the Oaks Apartments complex in Albany, Oregon, flying a flag of any kind is against the rules.
So when democrats protest it is a bunch of 60s throwbacks...but when there are tea parties that is patriotism at work?

No doubt the irony is lost on you.

And Obama's policies ARE detrimental to our country. That is another fact. Just as Obama HAS gone around the world - apologizing for what he perceives to be the "wrongs" of America. There are videos of him doing such. Stating actual events that have occurred and/or are occuring is not "working in a bit of hate." Rather, it's stating the facts. Got a problem with that?
Carl Hicks: FYI: It's "Independence Day" - not "Independance Day."
Carl Hicks - Jul 02, 2011 4:49 PM
You should use exact quotes and not paraphrase when trying to tell others what someone has said.
" I stated what Obama's wife said about never being proud of her country till Barry was running for the office of the Prez. That is a fact. There is video of her stating such.-Amy
" And let me tell you something -- for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. " Michelle Obama
I guess you can read never into it on a stretch but then you shouldn't claim to be quoting when you are changing that comments content...
ahemmer - Jul 02, 2011 4:56 PM
Here's a follow up from her remark: "Asked for a response to the remark, Obama campaign spox Bill Burton said, “Of course Michelle is proud of her country, which is why she and Barack talk constantly about how their story wouldn’t be possible in any other nation on Earth. What she meant is that she’s really proud at this moment because for the first time in a long time, thousands of Americans who’ve never participated in politics before are coming out in record numbers to build a grassroots movement for change." Think that in ANY way means Michelle is proud cuz Barry is running on that good ole "hopey-changey" platform? Me sure does!
Carl Hicks - Jul 02, 2011 5:26 PM
Why do you misquote and then pervert what someone has said?
I stated what Obama's wife said about never being proud of her country till Barry was running for the office of the Prez. That is a fact. There is video of her stating such.- Amy
in Madison, she said, "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country,
By saying she was "never" proud you are not quoting but interjecting your opinion ( or one provided to you) of what was said...she didn't say she wasn't proud before.... just that she felt more pride at that point then ever before in her adult lifetime...at least that is what you'd hear if you weren't wanting there to be another meaning to her words...

Actually this was just an over reaching landlord who wanted to avoid “problems”.
And the ban was not just for Old Glory, it covered all kinds of flags, including sports flags as well as flags from every country. Even flag stickers and flags that were attached to the tenants vehicles.
Their stated reason for the flag ban was because “Albany is a diverse community”, whatever that is supposed to mean.
The landlords legal counsel set them straight and they rescinded the ban.
It had absolutely nothing to do with a “liberal agenda”.
Carl Hicks - Jul 02, 2011 6:16 PM
Yes I think that is the best anyone can do is not read into what others say.
Just saying that misquoting someone and then placing judgement of what was said on a misquote isn't the correct thing to do and to be correct here I am not nitpicking her words. It's your misquote I'm nitpickin'....
SPalin - Jul 02, 2011 7:26 PM
No, actually that's an opinion.
And why do you have to take down the first lady? I mean, for God sake she
outclasses all of us. And unlike the previous first lady, she never killed anyone. That
is another fact.
Carl Hicks - Jul 02, 2011 8:09 PM
Maybe what we can gather from this study done by a bunch of liberal Harvard professors is that all those tree hugging liberals are the ones filling the campgrounds making the week before and after the 4th the the busiest part of the camping season.
While the republicans are locally promoting their businesses by sponsoring parades.

Remember to be responsible when “playing” with fireworks.
Fireworks have the potential to cause great bodily harm.
Always follow safe procedures while using fireworks.
Do not aim any firework at another person. (Bottle rocket “wars” come to mind)
Keep any children and spectators at a safe distance.
Always get away from the firework after lighting.
Be very cautious with a dud; give it some time to go out before approaching it.
reformed trucker - Jul 02, 2011 9:40 PM
What, you get to play with pyrotechnics? OK, you suck... and I'm envious! Be safe, and don't blow off any parts you still use yet.
You light off any in Hartland? They moved to a "ground display" type show about 12 years ago because there are too many houses near the launch site now.
My favorites are still the "flash" ones that seem like a stick of dynamite chucked up into the air...
reformed trucker - Jul 02, 2011 9:47 PM
Ahh, fond childhood memories...
But YES, one could put an eye out doing that (or get a shoulder injury like my friend).
ExToDResident - Jul 02, 2011 10:13 PM
They call those Salutes; they only come in 3”, they used to be bigger 4 and 5 inches, but the ATF changed that. The shell sizes run from 3” up to 6” for most public displays. They do have 8” and larger but those are generally reserved for larger shows. They need 70 feet per inch of shell radius around the shooting site. So when it comes to a 6” shell they need an area 840 feet across. A 3” shell needs an area 420 feet across. The rules for public displays are spelled out in NFPA 1123.
They used to shoot the show from the south side of the tracks before it was filled in with houses. Now if I am not mistaken they are limited to the baseball diamond in Nixon park.
I am a little hard of hearing, more the aftereffect of listening to a friend’s Klipshe Corner Horns at “concert levels” than shooting fireworks. But still have all my fingers. Like most things you have to respect what you are working with.
Carl Hicks - Jul 02, 2011 10:17 PM
Like I said though whatever your reason for loving living here...
Happy 4th!
RT I think you mean "salutes"..my fav also....look for little tubes called "sammy shots" closest thing to a salute I have ever seen as far as for class "C" more like tossing an m80 up in the air... they had them at the place off 41 & 33 north of Allenton on the frontage road.
www.fireworks.com
I doubt the north shore of Pewaukee lake is any quieter without me there...it always sounds like we're at war every 4th there...lol
