The Real Thanksgiving Story: A Failed Experiment in Socialism
The following is a reprint of a blog I posted a year ago during Thanksgiving week. The relevance of the story is so important - especially with what our country has experienced during the past three years. From the "Foundation for Economic Education" - 2007:
The Real Thanksgiving Story
In the middle of December 1620 the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, leaving behind the sinfulness of the “old world” to make a “new Jerusalem” in America. Three years later, in November 1623, they had a great feast thanking God for getting them through an earlier famine, and now for a bountiful crop.
What had created the earlier famine and then the bountiful crops? The story is told in the diary of Governor Bradford, who was one of the elders of that early Puritan colony.
At first, they decided to turn their back on all the institutions of the England that had been their home. This included the institution of private property, which they declared to be the basis of greed, averse, and selfishness. Instead, they were determined to live the “Platonic ideal” of collectivism, in which all work would be done in common, with the rewards of their collective efforts evenly divided among the colonists. Farming was done in common, as well as housekeeping and child raising. This was supposed to lead to prosperity and brotherly love.
But their experiment in collectivism did not lead to prosperity or brotherly love. Rather, it created poverty and envy and slothfulness among most of the members of this little society. (Hmmmm...sound familiar?)
Here is Bradford’s description of what socialism created among the Pilgrims:
“The experience that was had in this common course and condition, tried sundry years and that amongst godly and sober men, may well evince the vanity of that conceit of Plato's and other ancients applauded by some of later times; that the taking away of property and bringing in community into a commonwealth would make them happy and flourishing; as if they were wiser than God. For this community was found to breed much confusion and discontent and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort. For the young men, that were most able and fit for labor and service, did repine that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men's wives and children without any recompense. The strong… had no more in division of victuals and clothes than he that was weak and not able to do a quarter the other could; this was thought injustice. The aged and graver men to be ranked and equalized in labors everything else, thought it some indignity and disrespect unto them.
“And for men's wives to be commanded to do service for other men, as dressing their meat, washing their clothes, etc., they deemed it a kind of slavery, neither could many husbands well brook it. Upon the point all being to have alike, and all to do alike, they thought themselves in the like condition, and one as good as another; and so, if it did not cut off those relations that God hath set amongst men, yet it did at least much diminish and take off the mutual respects that should be preserved amongst them… Let none object this is men's corruption, and nothing to the course itself. I answer, seeing all men have this corruption in them, God in His wisdom saw another course fitter for them.”
For two years the harvest time failed to bring forth enough to feed the people. Indeed, many starved and many died of famine. Faced with this disaster, the elders of the colony gathered, Governor Bradford tells us, and decided that another year, and they would surely all die and disappear in the wilderness.
Instead, they decided to divide the property and fields of the colony, and gave each family a piece as their own. Whatever they did not use for their own consumption, they had the right to trade away to their neighbors for something they desired instead.
Now, instead of sloth, envy, resentment, and anger among the colonists, there was a great turnaround in their activities. Industry, effort, and joy were now seen in practically all that the men, women and children did. Bradford writes:
“They had very good success, for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been. The women now went willingly into the field, and took their little ones with them to set corn; which before would allege weakness and inability; whom to have compelled would have been thought great tyranny and oppression…By this time harvest was come, and instead of famine, now God gave them plenty, and the faces of things were changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many, for which they blessed God.”
Indeed, their bounty was so great, that they had enough to not only trade among themselves but also with the neighboring Indians in the forest. In November 1623, they had a great feast to which they also invited the Indians. They prepared turkey and corn, and much more, and thanked God for bringing them a bountiful crop. They, therefore, set aside a day of “Thanksgiving.”
So this Thursday, when we all sit down with our families and friends to enjoy the turkey and the trimmings, let us not forget that we are celebrating the establishment and triumph of capitalism and the spirit of enterprise in America!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Better yet, instead of finding more elaberate ways to cheat and short change the system, take a job and decide that you are going to see how far you can advance within a year. Ask the owner if there is anything you could do to help them out. After they recover from their fainting spell, help them up and offer to do something extra that no one else has done. After you realize that your fellow human beings enjoy watching your development and growth, enjoy the fruits of your labors and keep progressing. Within a short period of time you'll see an attitude change from within. You'll look into the mirror and wonder how you could have been such a selfish jerk. Other people will admire you, for now you want to give back and help people on your own without the heavy hand of the nanny state. You may even say a silent prayer and thank God for getting to you before it was all too late. Good luck. Now get busy, we need you out here!

Looks like WI is moving up. Gallup has WI as "avg" for 20011 job growth.

You also forgot to tell your readers the other part of that report. The much broader CPS employment numbers showed a nice gain. Even your CES data has a yearly gain since Doyle and his demos are no longer: "Employment Survey
October 2011 Month/Month Year/Year
CES 2,747,500 -9,700 +6,000
CPS 2,822,605 +3,406 +11,639

And the jobs in WI actually gained in Oct and for the year if you look at all the data even from your own source! LOL!
BTW, one month does not determine an economic trend or outcome. 8 years as Gov, 4 years running the house and senate, and 3 years running the White Hose do.

No they didn’t…
“(Reuters) - U.S. average gasoline prices rose 8 percent, or 21 cents, in 2007 from the prior year, an industry analyst said, as oil prices rose. The average annual price for U.S. gasoline was $2.7878 in 2007, up from 2006's $2.5730, according to the Lundberg survey of about 7,000 U.S. gas stations.
Gasoline prices rose as the price of U.S. crude oil rose from about $60 a barrel at the end of 2006 to more than $90 a barrel near the end of 2007.”

“unemployment skyrocketed”
Which started under Bush’s watch, and just imagine what it would be if GM and Chrysler went bankrupt like conservatives wanted.
“trillions added to the debt”
I concede that Obama has added to the debt. However, just because our debt is in the trillions does not mean it was all accumulated under Obama’s watch. You are ignoring the fact that our trillion dollar debt was created by his predecessors both Republican and Democrat. (Though if you take the time to examine the statistics on the debt, it is plain to see that historically the debt has increased significantly more with each republican president than any democrat president since Nixon. What do you think history is screaming at us there Jim?)
“a new war in Libya” Haayett
There is no war in Libya anymore Jim, it officially ended the 23rd of October.

OK, gas rose to near double when Obama added in his Keynesian economnics.

Unemployment? "February 3, 2006: 12:43 PM EST
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - The unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in nearly five years in January, the government reported Friday, as employers added a respectable 193,000 jobs to payrolls and paychecks increased more than expected.
The Labor Department said the unemployment rate dipped to 4.7 percent from 4.9 in December, the lowest since 4.6 percent in July 2001, just before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Economists had forecast that the rate would remain unchanged from December."
Factual data says Obama and his democrat took unemployment from 2006 levels at 4.7% to near 10%. http://money.cnn.com/2006/02/03/news/economy/jobs_january/index.htm

One thing we as citizens of Wisconsin have to be grateful for this season is Governor Walker. We now have a governor who truly has the best interests of the state at heart. Whether it be in creating a business-friendly environment or working to address out-of-control spending for the first time - resulting in a balanced budget. And Walker saved thousands of teaching jobs with ACT 10.
As you drive around on Black Friday or other future days, be sure to note the "Recall Walker" misguided folks out there holding up signs and having petitions signed (mulitple times by a single individual seems to be OK). We can do our part by creating our own "Keep Walker" signs and standing in the same vicinity as these poor, misguided (or paid) anti-Walker protesters. I witnessed four or five people near Brookfield Square earlier today, with a brave soul standing nearby with a "Keep Walker" sign. Guess who was smiling? The "Keep Walker" person - who was giving people who honked the "thumbs up" sign, while it appeared the Recall folks were being ignored! We need to see more of this out there. Get off your butts and get out there with your own home-made signs (they don't have to be the fancy printed signs all the recall people seem to have that can be quite costly).
ANd for a real shocker - the Democratic Party is promoting "Cemetery Petition Drives" which involve taking names for the recall off of tombstones. Yes, you read that right. Have they NO shame? Will they stop at nothing?
Check it out:

And no, I don't believe that the anti-Walker crowd will come up with over 500,000 valid (key word - valid (meaning honest, legitimate) signatures in order to hold an election.
What I like to see is the "Recall Walker" people (usually looking a bit disheveled - long hair, beards (ala children of the 60's) standing around while the cars drive by. Sure, they get a signature or two, and forge a few more for good measure, but the drive in itself needs to collect LOTS of signatures. What's really funny how the news media - without question - reports that the Recall Walker folks tell them the've got 50,000 or 100,000 signatures already and the news media runs with the story - never checking out whether or not this claim is indeed true. I'd love for a pro-Walker person/group to call one of the local news stations and tell them they have a million signatures of people who think Walker should remain in office. Think the media would report it? No way. Yet, why is the media so willing to take at face value the numbers/claim from a few miscreants who are spending taxpayer dollars to the tune of millions of dollars simply because they are unhappy with election results. Incredible.

As for the underage girls signing a recall petition for Walker - judge for yourself. See the pics. Still under investigation is whether or not these girls received cigarettes in return for signing the petition. And it is still questionable as to the true ages - since the Democratic Party suddenly saw fit to "find these girls" and in checking out their ID's (hey, I thought it was so difficult to have an ID - especially for voting! :)) found they were in their 20's. It's true! The Dems told the media this, so it must be true!
Face it, SPalin. We KNOW cheating is already going on. People have reported signing petitions in one area, then going to another and being told it's just fine to sign again. I suggest that people who are supportive of Walker ask to sign the recall petitions and instead of names, write in "WE SUPPORT GOVERNOR WALKER."

I guess you don’t believe that Lena Taylor who is only allowed 8 to live in her rental but has had over 33 per year use her address as a residence for voting isn’t real either.
I know you guys aren’t stupid but you sure act it when things are revealed about the corruption involved with your party each and every election.
Whatever it takes I guess lying and cheating for the good of the results.
The Dems seem to have a moral break down every single election or maybe they just never had any in the first place.
ahemmer - Nov 26, 2011 11:02 AM
Tom Bal: Great point about Lena "don't you know who I am" Taylor. Taylor and her mother own a property in Milwaukee zoned for eight-person occupancy. Appears that 36 people listed Taylor's property as their residence on election day last year while doing same-day registration. Among them a convicted felon and a person whose actual address is in Chicago. Hmmmm. Again, tho, nothing to see! Move along! Miss Taylor and her mother were just "taking in the homeless" out of the goodness of their hearts - as well as vouching for them on election day, of course! Wink wink. And according to Taylor, there's lots of people always coming and going from this property. Disgusting.
This is blatant, in-your-face voter fraud and the media - rather than investigating on their own - says that "conservative groups have raised questions." Shouldn't the media be the ones raising the questions about the obvious fraud? Nope! That would go against the leftie playbook that the so-called journalists of today have to abide by!
And SPalin - the only reason that the Urinal/Sentinel endorsed Walker for governor was because they knew Tom Barrett didn't stand a chance. (Or, maybe, just maybe, since the Urinals/Sentinel has a good track record of backing losers, maybe they were hoping their endorsement of Walker would be the kiss of death?).
