So WHY recall Walker?
The following is an e-mail sent to me from my conservative acquaintance, Paula, who so often manages to eloquently state what many of us feel. With the upcoming June 5th recall elections looming on the horizon, her write-up is timely and very thought-provoking. Thanks, Paula, for allowing me to share your observations (yet again) in this blog post:
----------------------------
Hey All -
For those of us that live in Wisconsin, the recall of Scott Walker is all about the unions. It was the unions, AFSCME and WEAC primarily that were the major force behind the protests and occupation of our state capitol. I can personally attest to the rhetoric and organizers behind the capitol protests as I made numerous personal visits during the height of the mayhem. AFL-CIO 18 wheelers were prominently parked on the capitol square during those crazy months. They wanted their presence felt - looming and dangerous – “don't screw with us” looks on their faces. The outcry by those at these mob scenes was almost always laced with “Scott Walker took away our collective bargaining rights” and “Walker is against the working man,” and, of course, “Walker is in the back pocket of big corporations.”
The tantrum that is the left's recall is now in full retreat. Tom Barrett, who just won the Democratic primary to face Scott Walker in June for the recall general election, is distancing himself from the unions. The union-backed candidate, Kathleen Falk, not only lost soundly but lost by 31 points (62 Barrett - 31 Falk) in her own liberal district. Ms. Falk signed onto a pledge to - if elected - not sign a state budget until full collective bargaining privileges (not rights) were restored. Well you can see how popular that message was received. The residents of Wisconsin have been living with the Act 10 changes for long enough to see the veil pulled back from the steel hold the unions had on the taxpayers of this state. They screamed that Walkers reforms would ruin schools, class sizes would rise. there would be massive layoffs - it would harm the kids!
The reality of the situation is much different. Most school districts in the state are in a better financial position than ever. There were no mass layoffs, class sizes were not increased and programs were not cut - FACTS. Oh wait, yes all these thing did come to pass in the districts that rushed to sign contracts before Act 10 went into effect. Milwaukee, Kenosha, and Janesville all are seeing the results of NOT reforming as Walker offered. In fact, MPS twice went to it's teacher union and almost begged that they give some concessions in order to keep over 400 teachers - the teachers refused to pay anything toward their health insurance and make a contribution to their own pensions - therefore forcing the layoff of of course the newest teachers and increasing class sizes and cutting programs. Yea - it's all about the kids.
Don't even get me started on the WEA Trust Health insurance scam - someone should go to jail for that fiasco in my opinion. Needless to say at last count the taxpayers have saved tens of millions of dollars by simply not being forced as a condition of collective bargaining to use the insurance company founded by the teachers union. FYI - WEA Trust's revenue declined by $70 million since the implementation of Act 10.
I close by letting you in on a little-reported secret - Tom Barrett refused to be seen on stage at a unity rally after his win in the primary with union leaders. Really, I wonder why Mr. Barrett wants to distance himself from WEAC and ASFME? He know it is a losing issue - so Mr. Barrett is doing what we expect - smearing, lying, embellishing and changing the subject in his campaign. Sad really.
If we the taxpayers of this state are going to spend over $18 million dollars (latest estimate by the Government Accountability Board) to unseat Scott Walker, can we at least have a good reason why? The new projection just released shows that at the end of the two year budget cycle enacted by Governor Walker, the state should be in the black by $154 million, instead of the $3.6 billion dollar hole left by Doyle and the Democratic controlled assembly, and the best part is that our taxes were not jacked up and our schools are in better shape then when we started this madness.
So WHY recall Walker???
If anyone can answer this question with a thoughtful, logical argument I will forward it on to the list* - something I have never done –
I dare you to try.

He was far less than forthcoming with his anti union agenda during the run up to the election. This was not stated in his platform at any time. It was deceitful and underhanded and dishonest. If he had set out this agenda clearly and succinctly during the run up, he would have never been voted in.
That's why Walker was recalled.

Paula obviously as no clue what she is talking about - her statement is FALSE.
The blog host's very own district is having budget issues due to reduced state aid:
http://www.livinglakecountry.com/lakecountryreporter/news/merton-schools-shave-
away-at-budget-8e569t0-150442285.html
And there are hundreds more in WI - do a Google search. Example - search for:
"Act 10 tools don't equal cuts"
Scott Walker drastically cut state aide to schools, passed off the burden to solve
the issue on local school boards, then proclaimed 'I solved it'.
That's enough reason for me to recall him - and 1 million WI residents agree.
Actions have consequences.

recall him. JMann, that has to be the weakest reasoning I've heard yet. Having
just watched Bill Clinton on the American Experience broadcast tonight, you
realize that when you have the political majority that Walker had, you strike. The
reason he will succeed where Clinton failed is that he did not lie about his
intentions. It would have been foolish for walker NOT to do what he had the
legislature did.
Bruce, you are a liar. I guess since you live in the southeastern U.S. you know all
about Merton's school budget. You are a teacher at 'Merton and we all know it. By
the way, good luck on that million, especially when you have to lie and cheat. It
amazes all of us how your reasoning for this recall has completely fallen apart.
That's OK though, your just going to get slaughtered on June 5th!!!

Ah, BS, just couldn't help yourself, could you? In addition, you should do a wee bit of reading re: the article you cite. Cutting "state aid" (money from the taxpayers) to schools IS the way to go. It will succeed in making the schools more fiscally responsible and thoughtful about how to use the money they have. Trimming costs is what most responsible businesses do, especially in the economic times we face. There IS a lot of bloat in many budgets - especially in the public sector. Schools must adapt, as businesses (that actually have the ability to make profits) have been doing for years simply in order to stay in business. We must trim costs where we can - and get this - BS - it CAN be done and the quality of education provided can still be maintained! You neglect to mention that no teachers in said district are losing their jobs due to cuts. None.
ahemmer - May 16, 2012 6:51 AM
Oh, almost forgot - hey BS - go get ready for school!!! You've only got about 2 hours to get to work!
jman99 - May 16, 2012 7:24 AM
""Does every politician run through their entire list of exactly what they will do to balance a budget?"
You would think that a fundamental change in the relationship of the state and the unions that have contracts with the state would rate a higher priority than reducing the number of paper clips used in the governor's office or switching to a less pleasant quality of toilet paper to save a few bucks.
I guess that really shows how much Walkerites value people. "
Exactly. People were treated with as much respect and forethought as office furniture.
yert49 - May 16, 2012 7:44 AM
"Exactly. People were treated with as much respect and forethought as office furniture. "
OH my! The horror of it all" When one economic segment has a stranglehold on you go in and surgically remove the vice. That is exactly what Walker did and why we all will be treated to your incessent whining in the weeks to come.
ahemmer - May 16, 2012 7:57 AM
People were treated with respect - look at how many teachers (whose districts used ACT 10) jobs were saved by Walker. Imagine if Doyle or Barrett had been Governor - how many jobs would have been lost AND taxes would have increased.
What also bears mentioning here is that MPS - a school system that is a mess - spent $16,665.00 (information from the DPI) per pupil last year. Imagine. Think there may be a bit of bloat there? What have the results been coming out of MPS? A dismal graduation rate of 50%!!! Students being unable to read or write at a reasonable, expected level.
The state average outside of MPS per student from 2011 was almost $10,000.00. Yet, many schools receiving far less money do have close to 100% graduation rates! Students actually have learned how to read and write! Amazing.
Money does not solve all problems. Money is not the end-all to ensuring a quality education. Raising taxes is NOT a solution to every problem, like libs/Dems think. Walker is addressing the high cost of doing public business AND saving the taxpayers money AND bringing jobs to our state AND not raising taxes!
Now, WHY should Walker be recalled?
No one seems to be able to answer that one honestly...

Totally Hemmer Canard again. Rural schools will usually have higher graduation rates because class sizes are smaller. Costs in urban areas are always higher and there is a far greater diversity of students in urban areas that require different remedial measures than in rural areas.
Total Hemmer Canard.
yert49 - May 16, 2012 8:33 AM
Money does not equate to graduation rates. Canard? Hardly!
jman99 - May 16, 2012 8:46 AM
Only in your mind.
The diversity comes from student in the urban area who end up there from Wisconsin Rural and outside of Wisconsin systems. There is a far less likelihood that new arrivals in Wisconsin will be settling in rural areas than in urban, so the problems of integration of these students is the responsibility of the urban systems. It is costly especially if there is remedial instruction that needs to take place.
Rural schools are fairly stable as to their year to year composition of students and the individual tracking is much easier. In an urban setting kids tend to move around from school to school for a variety of reasons so tracking is much harder. Many schools will see less than 60% continuation of student from one year to the next as a cohort group moves through the system. Between say grade 9 and grade 12 in a single urban school you may have a discontinuity of the cohort as high as 50%.
So yes, it is a Hemmer Canard.

problem. Your PDLS friends claim to be non-racist , but prove to be the only racists !!
Then your un-educated comment on class size is funny . Do you know the average
class size in Milwaukee ? Do you know the average class size ,in lets say WFB ?
Then lets pretend that jman is correct . If the diversity is good for society and jman
is correct why is Milwaukee's school system failing and needing more money ? lol...
jman ......I thought you and your PDLS friends told the world that diversity is a
powerhouse ? So which way is it ? lol...

Attacks are just that . I am pointing ouyt your flaws in reality ! Why are you not able
to understand such things ? I still would love to know why you say diversity is great
yet use it to show how it impedes learning ? You do realize that you argued against
what you want to believe as true ?
