A Shooting in Connecticut
The nation is reeling from yet another attack on a school by a madman. In all, 26 people were killed - 20 children among them and six adults. Adam Lanza, age 20, is said to be the lone gunman who eventually killed himself.
I have a few observations on this whole horrific episode. They are as follows:
1) My deepest sympathies and heartfelt prayers go out to all the people in Newtown, Connecticut. I cannot begin to fathom what the parents who lost children are going through, or others who lost family members. Their lives have been forever changed, as have the lives of those children and adults who survived. The trauma and mayhem which occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School is shocking.
2) I sincerely hope that the blame for this massacre is placed squarely where it belongs: on Adam Lanza. Hopefully politicians will not use this crisis to further yet another political cause - like attacking guns as is the usual knee-jerk reaction. We have a political party in charge who believes they should never let a "good crisis go to waste" and it wouldn't surprise me if Lanza is pushed in the background and the "guns" are made out to be the culprit.
3) It is too bad that deranged individuals like Lanza - or the Sikh Temple shooter Wade Michael Page - or the Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho - etc., don't just stay home and kill themselves if they are so angry, and despondent about their own personal lives. Why they have to go out and kill innocents and then take their own lives afterwards is beyond explanation. The world is a better place without these kinds of evil people in it.
4) I was sickened watching President Obama do one of his "I...I...I..." speeches after this tragedy. Obama clearly doesn't get it. This murderous rampage in Connecticut was not about him. Obama did not need to remind the nation that he is "president" but also is reacting as a "parent." This man's arrogance and self-absorption knows no bounds. During his scripted speech, he wiped away crocodile tears - I really do believe that these little gestures were written into his speech.
5) I would like to see public schools allow an administrative leader (like a principal or superintendent) to have access to a weapon within the school. Designate a staffer or two to have a key to where a gun is kept. In the event that an armed individual or several individuals enter a school with ill intent, at least the school would have a way to defend itself until help arrives. Calling 911 is expected, but crucial minutes go by until police get to the scene. Right now, schools are sitting ducks for any madman. "No Guns Allowed" signs are laughable.
6) The United States is made up of millions of people. Within our population are many, many people who do not play by the rules - people who break the laws. Who kill, rape, harm, steal, etc. People who have no moral compass and no remorse for their crimes. Many people are also mentally ill - and some can be dangerous. Sociopaths. Psychopaths. There is no way we can predict when, where, or how other events like Shady Hook, Columbine, Virginia Tech, etc. shootings will happen. What we can do as a society is realize that there ARE people out there who have no qualms about committing such violent and vile crimes. Evil does exist. We all need to take every step we can to protect ourselves against future crimes like these. We also must realize that everyone has rights, and to point our fingers at "red flags" that some individuals may present in regards to being dangerous won't always work. (The ACLU will see to that.) Instead, we must accept the fact that violence and evil exists, live our lives to defend to the best of our own abilities against such violence and evil, and support those who endure such tragedies.
In closing, I would again like to offer my sympathies to all of those in Connecticut who experienced this senseless, brutal massacre. There are no explanations for what possesses someone to do such a thing. The lives of the little children and adults who witnessed the murders of their classmates and teachers have been forever changed. The deaths of the children and adults are beyond comprehension. I hope that the people of Newtown, and all who were killed, injured, or directly affected by this horrible act of violence, will be able to eventually find some peace and comfort knowing that the nation is praying for them.

we are going to accept them within society without any limitations, we unfortunately
will witness innocents die. It is inevitable when we have to be all things to all
people.
Just remember when you forget this tragedy in a couple of weeks that the biggest
loss has been our lack of judgement.

This list of children's names should be read out in every classroom in America starting Monday and every day of school until those children would have graduated high school.
It would serve two purposes :
1) a living memorial to those killed from that cohort
2) a constant reminder that in America, you can be killed at any time.

!!! 2) It would have been better, if a person with a gun could have stopped the nut
before he killed all those kids !!!

astounded me to learn that 80 to 1 that guns are used to protect ! Wow , why is
there even a debate ?

* She was unaware of who Jones is, and how extreme/fringe/loony he is. All she heard was some juicy nonsense that she, for some wierd and bizarre reason, wanted to believe. This would be disturbing.
Or
* She knows exactly who he is and what he has said. This would be disturbing.

That's absurd.
You have thousands of National guardsmen through out America. Just post two of those guardsmen at each of schools like they do in Israel.

Suffice it to say, I used it because I believe that Jones is correct with pointing out Obama's fake crying (wiping non-existent tears out of the far corners of his eye? really? I swear it was written in his teleprompter script: "now pause...use finger to dab at outside corner of eye...."). I also agree with Jones stance on how Obama wants to do away with the 2nd Amendment. I do not agree with a lot of what Mr. Jones believes in other cases. (It's simply the same as Paul Ryan liking "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand and not agreeing with her stance on religion. He just like the book and the spot-on story of what compares to where the U.S. is headed under Obama. It's the same as people going to see a movie with ultra-libs Susan Sarandon or George Clooney - even if one cannot stand their way-out-there political views, they may still like them as actors.)
And WFB: I agree with you. Violence and death happens around the globe. China is experiencing killings/attacks in schools (with knives and meat cleavers - not guns!). Would lefties have a knee-jerk reaction to outlaw knives? See the following link for a recent China school attack resulting in 23 people injured: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57559179/china-school-knife-attack-leaves-23-injured/ and to read about other school attacks in China.
I also have to wonder if the principal at Shady Hook had been armed, would she have been able to stop Adam Lanza when she first encountered him before he reached the classrooms?

In Pearl, Miss., a gunman who killed two students and wounded seven at a high school was stopped by an assistant principal, who rushed to his car and got his gun. The assistant principal, running back with his .45, spotted the rifle-carrying shooter in the parking lot. Ordering the teen to stop, the vice principal held his gun to the shooter's neck until police arrived.
In Salt Lake City, a man purchased a knife in a grocery store, walked outside and stabbed and critically injured two men. He was threatening others, when a store patron with a concealed weapons permit drew his gun, forced the attacker to the ground and held him until police arrived.
In Grundy, Va., a disgruntled student on the verge of his second suspension at Appalachian School of Law shot and killed the dean, a professor and a fellow student. Two students, both off-duty peace officers, ran to their cars, retrieved their guns and used them to halt the attack. http://news.yahoo.com/yes-guns-kill-often-used-self-defense-070000428.html

In addition, anyone thinking of entering a school and committing the murderous acts similar to Lanza may think twice, knowing that some people within the school are designated to defend the school with a gun.
Please explain why this is "absurd?" (By the way, I agree with the possibility of using the National Guard to protect the schools.)

Yes. Only lefties think Alex is insane. I find it disturbing you phrase it that way. http://forums.randi.org/showthread.php?t=237456
"... would jump all over that small item in my post."
1/6 is not particularly small.
For the record, I have no problem with trained (Im not talikng about a $50 CC "class" to get the permit) staff having secured access to a gun.
Mr Balanced - Dec 16, 2012 11:14 AM
We can fix these senseless shootings as soon as our politicians and certain people stop blaming everyone and everything but the person who killed. Overreactions are as destructive as doing nothing. Way too many are barking up the wrong tree.
I saw Obama’s speech live. He was faking the tears. Why I don’t know. Mr Pres is as hurt as anyone. But the fake crying? Didn’t help.
jman99 - Dec 16, 2012 11:23 AM
How do you put that in a job description? How do you pay and compensate for that?
What if your "designates" happen to be both gone that day?
No you are far better off to leave this to the National Guard. You know the quality and you know they are disengaged from the school community. Just keep them on rotation from school to school.
ahemmer - Dec 16, 2012 11:43 AM
As for "put(ting) that in a job description - easy. Just say "designated access to a firearm to protect the students and staff in ______ school." Throw in extra pay for training, maintaining training in use of a firearm. Is that so difficult? And you know what, jman99, I bet schools would actually have some staffers volunteer for the position!

I'd much rather have a detached professional making this kind of call. Teachers are too close to the parents ( Parents and siblings can be shooters just like anyone eles) and kids to do this sort of thing and I'd rather have the principal in the office calling 911 and coordination resources.
You need professional detachment in these situations. The guardsman is prepared to take out anyone. Anyone else may second guess themselves and open a window of opportunity. Action is the key.
I want a calm cool professional who does not miss to take control of the situation. Guardsman are already on the national payroll, use them ( at least as long as it takes to get your system set up Hemmer) this could all happen again tomorrow morning in a school near you.
You want to wait that long to put security in place?
I can't see why Walker has not done this already.
There have been 31 of these school shootings since Columbine, its not like they are going to end any time soon.
It could happen in Wisconsin tomorrow.
WFB resident - Dec 16, 2012 12:23 PM
toting teachers ! We should take those obscene teacher salaries and reduce them to
pay more for the teachers willing to take the responsibility of teaching with a gun !!
Further more if teacher in an existing school refuses to do so . A job hunting they
must go !
