A Shooting in Connecticut
The nation is reeling from yet another attack on a school by a madman. In all, 26 people were killed - 20 children among them and six adults. Adam Lanza, age 20, is said to be the lone gunman who eventually killed himself.
I have a few observations on this whole horrific episode. They are as follows:
1) My deepest sympathies and heartfelt prayers go out to all the people in Newtown, Connecticut. I cannot begin to fathom what the parents who lost children are going through, or others who lost family members. Their lives have been forever changed, as have the lives of those children and adults who survived. The trauma and mayhem which occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School is shocking.
2) I sincerely hope that the blame for this massacre is placed squarely where it belongs: on Adam Lanza. Hopefully politicians will not use this crisis to further yet another political cause - like attacking guns as is the usual knee-jerk reaction. We have a political party in charge who believes they should never let a "good crisis go to waste" and it wouldn't surprise me if Lanza is pushed in the background and the "guns" are made out to be the culprit.
3) It is too bad that deranged individuals like Lanza - or the Sikh Temple shooter Wade Michael Page - or the Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho - etc., don't just stay home and kill themselves if they are so angry, and despondent about their own personal lives. Why they have to go out and kill innocents and then take their own lives afterwards is beyond explanation. The world is a better place without these kinds of evil people in it.
4) I was sickened watching President Obama do one of his "I...I...I..." speeches after this tragedy. Obama clearly doesn't get it. This murderous rampage in Connecticut was not about him. Obama did not need to remind the nation that he is "president" but also is reacting as a "parent." This man's arrogance and self-absorption knows no bounds. During his scripted speech, he wiped away crocodile tears - I really do believe that these little gestures were written into his speech.
5) I would like to see public schools allow an administrative leader (like a principal or superintendent) to have access to a weapon within the school. Designate a staffer or two to have a key to where a gun is kept. In the event that an armed individual or several individuals enter a school with ill intent, at least the school would have a way to defend itself until help arrives. Calling 911 is expected, but crucial minutes go by until police get to the scene. Right now, schools are sitting ducks for any madman. "No Guns Allowed" signs are laughable.
6) The United States is made up of millions of people. Within our population are many, many people who do not play by the rules - people who break the laws. Who kill, rape, harm, steal, etc. People who have no moral compass and no remorse for their crimes. Many people are also mentally ill - and some can be dangerous. Sociopaths. Psychopaths. There is no way we can predict when, where, or how other events like Shady Hook, Columbine, Virginia Tech, etc. shootings will happen. What we can do as a society is realize that there ARE people out there who have no qualms about committing such violent and vile crimes. Evil does exist. We all need to take every step we can to protect ourselves against future crimes like these. We also must realize that everyone has rights, and to point our fingers at "red flags" that some individuals may present in regards to being dangerous won't always work. (The ACLU will see to that.) Instead, we must accept the fact that violence and evil exists, live our lives to defend to the best of our own abilities against such violence and evil, and support those who endure such tragedies.
In closing, I would again like to offer my sympathies to all of those in Connecticut who experienced this senseless, brutal massacre. There are no explanations for what possesses someone to do such a thing. The lives of the little children and adults who witnessed the murders of their classmates and teachers have been forever changed. The deaths of the children and adults are beyond comprehension. I hope that the people of Newtown, and all who were killed, injured, or directly affected by this horrible act of violence, will be able to eventually find some peace and comfort knowing that the nation is praying for them.

Im sorry you have a problem with the networks carrying a speech from the President of the United States at a time of a national tragedy.
I can no longer stomach this blog and the sickness of mind it exposes.

Now Obama is clearly using the Shady Hook tragedy to make a pitch for going after guns yet again. He is USING this tragedy, MGarber, to further his OWN agenda. That is what I call a "sickness of mind." We have a president who pretends to cry on television because he cannot muster up real tears. Why is that? Why does he need to act? Why must he use the pronoun "I" throughout all his speeches and always say "I am the president" as if we do not know it. Obama is a narcisstic, self-absorbed, cold-hearted socialist. He must be cringing at the fact that the people of Newtown are finding solace in their faith - attending churches for prayer vigils. They are praying to a real God, not Obama.

So are you Hemmer. That's America.

I don't for a minute believe any of the above.
Why?
Because real sympathy is never tempered with the statements that came listed afterwards.
You had a political agenda posting this blog and you've used the death of 20 children as a vehicle for it.
Congrats.
You will most likely delete this post, so I'll put it up on Jakes blog as well.

Mgarber,
Amy is pretty accurate with the bias between Obama vs. President Bush’s TV appearances and speeches. Maybe if you were not so one-sided towards Obama you could free your mind to see the extreme bias with the media in our country.
The definition of a narcissist is worn on Mr. Obama’s jacket. Much of what he and the media are doing is more towards removing guns all together than it is to mourn the tragedies that took place last Friday. You will do yourself good when you grasp and admit that even the party you tag along with is as guilty over this as the next. Politicians go to extremes with new regulations when tragedies like these happen. Look at what the media and many Democrats are now saying or trying to change: Those guns should not be owned or allowed in the hands of the mentally challenged. Another wrong idea and direction our politicians are moving us toward. Adam Lanza did not own those guns. How he got a hold of those guns is what we need to know more about. And how to better enforce ways to keep them out of the hands of people like Adam. He never bought those guns. Not from what I have read.

ones I know will hold 6 hand prints in its memory ! With that the children would
never see or be aware of the guns ! I understand that you are thinking with emotion
and are not aware of many devises used to conceal / store guns !!! They are the size
of a bread box and can be mounted under shelves, under desks , in drawers , or
decorated right out in the open . Those who do not look for them would not identify
them as gun boxes . The problem is that your knowledge of guns is limited to what
you see . Not what is known ! Also the trend of mass shootings is down from the
90's and is far below the high in the 1930's !!! Did any of you hear how the mall
shootings ended recently ? Thank goodness there was a concealed carry user in the
mall !!!

when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate.
their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air..
they could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.
they were filled with such joy, they didn't know what to say.
they remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.
"where are we?" asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.
"this is heaven." declared a small boy. "we're spending Christmas at God's house."
when what to their wondering eyes did appear,
but Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near.
He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.
then He opened His arms and He called them by name.
and in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring
those children all flew into the arms of their King
and as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace,
one small girl turned and looked at Jesus' face.
and as if He could read all the questions she had
He gently whispered to her, "I'll take care of mom and dad."
then He looked down on earth, the world far below
He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe
then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand,
"Let My power and presence re-enter this land!"
"may this country be delivered from the hands of fools"
"I'm taking back my nation. I'm taking back my schools!"
then He and the children stood up without a sound.
"come now my children, let me show you around."
excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran.
all displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can.
and i heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight,
"in the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT."

Jesus is powerless against guns. He's proved that over and over again.

So you are aware, the school where the shootings took place is a "gun free" zone. Connecticut also bans assault weapons. Yet the killer still got one.
Removing guns is not nor will be the answer.

That's why we need a couple of National Guardsman at each school.

The national media was once a microcosm for many in Washington. Now it's like a limb or the thinking behind too many Democrats. The national media is totally against guns in this country. You and I know that is true. It could be why stories like these never get published. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defensive_gun_use_incidents. One can only assume these are a smidgen of the thousands that go unnoticed
Think about this for a few moments if you can. What if some of these life saving stories were given equal time and print as the ones about those who abuse guns and the law? Undoubtedly more people would have a different and more balanced thought process about our gun laws and rules.

I know no such thing Mr. Balanced. I do know that the media does not report "take downs" by citizens with guns because on many occasions when they did, it led to others taking the low into their own hands in totally dis similar situations causing needless death and injury.
The police do not want to romanticize vigilantism. Ask any policeman.
I'm not a fan of the OK corral mentality. That's not a civilized country.
The use of Guardsmen at Schools until another solution is worked out is the only way to go. The National guard is there to keep citizens safe inside the USA. This is definitely a time to use them.

The only thing I asked was how long you had been lurking on this blog site. I see no personal information there, you already admitted that you do by your statements.
Mr Balanced - Dec 17, 2012 1:10 PM
I hope we can have good debates and compelling arguments back and forth. If OK with you, I must ask for a favor. Like I have others. Please read carefully what I say. I didn’t bring up any hint of “The police do not want to romanticize vigilantism.” Never crossed my mind either. The stories I gave are only a few of the possible thousands where guns were used to save one’s life or lives. As I would use mine to save me or others in the same situation. Vigilantes are like Charles Bronson in that old movie. Defending one’s life from a killer or robber or rapist, etc., etc., is not vigilantism. It’s called self-defense and staying alive in many cases.
Those stories, if reported by our media, would most likely change the perception about guns and gun control.
jman99 - Dec 17, 2012 1:38 PM
"As I would use mine to save me or others in the same situation."
Why would I ever trust you to do that? You could snap as quickly as the nest person?
What special powers do you have that allow you to determine exactly what is going on in a situation? You could be shooting just a s well at a plain clothes or under cover policeman as a shooter in any situation. You have no special training to protect me or mine. and, unless you actually face the situation you will never know if you can pull the trigger or not at that millisecond in time when it would make a difference.
Carry your gun if if it make you feel more secure, but don't you dare pull it out on my behalf, I'll not have your misjudgements on my conscience.
If you want to play protector of the public peace, join the police force or the army.
And by the way:
vig·i·lan·te
[vij-uh-lan-tee] Show IPA
noun
1.
a member of a vigilance committee.
2.
any person who takes the law into his or her own hands, as by avenging a crime.
adjective
3.
done violently and summarily, without recourse to lawful procedures: vigilante justice.
My definition was #1 not number #2 or #3 as you have alluded to. Charles Bronson does not enter my mind at all.
Mr Balanced - Dec 17, 2012 1:41 PM
This is your assumption. Yours only. "You have no special training to protect me or mine. and, unless you actually face the situation you will never know if you can pull the trigger or not at that millisecond in time when it would make a difference"
You're moving too far away from the discussion we are having. Oh well.

the speech police like JS online and others started to control free thought ? It is a
shame !!!
