A Shooting in Connecticut
The nation is reeling from yet another attack on a school by a madman. In all, 26 people were killed - 20 children among them and six adults. Adam Lanza, age 20, is said to be the lone gunman who eventually killed himself.
I have a few observations on this whole horrific episode. They are as follows:
1) My deepest sympathies and heartfelt prayers go out to all the people in Newtown, Connecticut. I cannot begin to fathom what the parents who lost children are going through, or others who lost family members. Their lives have been forever changed, as have the lives of those children and adults who survived. The trauma and mayhem which occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School is shocking.
2) I sincerely hope that the blame for this massacre is placed squarely where it belongs: on Adam Lanza. Hopefully politicians will not use this crisis to further yet another political cause - like attacking guns as is the usual knee-jerk reaction. We have a political party in charge who believes they should never let a "good crisis go to waste" and it wouldn't surprise me if Lanza is pushed in the background and the "guns" are made out to be the culprit.
3) It is too bad that deranged individuals like Lanza - or the Sikh Temple shooter Wade Michael Page - or the Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho - etc., don't just stay home and kill themselves if they are so angry, and despondent about their own personal lives. Why they have to go out and kill innocents and then take their own lives afterwards is beyond explanation. The world is a better place without these kinds of evil people in it.
4) I was sickened watching President Obama do one of his "I...I...I..." speeches after this tragedy. Obama clearly doesn't get it. This murderous rampage in Connecticut was not about him. Obama did not need to remind the nation that he is "president" but also is reacting as a "parent." This man's arrogance and self-absorption knows no bounds. During his scripted speech, he wiped away crocodile tears - I really do believe that these little gestures were written into his speech.
5) I would like to see public schools allow an administrative leader (like a principal or superintendent) to have access to a weapon within the school. Designate a staffer or two to have a key to where a gun is kept. In the event that an armed individual or several individuals enter a school with ill intent, at least the school would have a way to defend itself until help arrives. Calling 911 is expected, but crucial minutes go by until police get to the scene. Right now, schools are sitting ducks for any madman. "No Guns Allowed" signs are laughable.
6) The United States is made up of millions of people. Within our population are many, many people who do not play by the rules - people who break the laws. Who kill, rape, harm, steal, etc. People who have no moral compass and no remorse for their crimes. Many people are also mentally ill - and some can be dangerous. Sociopaths. Psychopaths. There is no way we can predict when, where, or how other events like Shady Hook, Columbine, Virginia Tech, etc. shootings will happen. What we can do as a society is realize that there ARE people out there who have no qualms about committing such violent and vile crimes. Evil does exist. We all need to take every step we can to protect ourselves against future crimes like these. We also must realize that everyone has rights, and to point our fingers at "red flags" that some individuals may present in regards to being dangerous won't always work. (The ACLU will see to that.) Instead, we must accept the fact that violence and evil exists, live our lives to defend to the best of our own abilities against such violence and evil, and support those who endure such tragedies.
In closing, I would again like to offer my sympathies to all of those in Connecticut who experienced this senseless, brutal massacre. There are no explanations for what possesses someone to do such a thing. The lives of the little children and adults who witnessed the murders of their classmates and teachers have been forever changed. The deaths of the children and adults are beyond comprehension. I hope that the people of Newtown, and all who were killed, injured, or directly affected by this horrible act of violence, will be able to eventually find some peace and comfort knowing that the nation is praying for them.

we are going to accept them within society without any limitations, we unfortunately
will witness innocents die. It is inevitable when we have to be all things to all
people.
Just remember when you forget this tragedy in a couple of weeks that the biggest
loss has been our lack of judgement.

This list of children's names should be read out in every classroom in America starting Monday and every day of school until those children would have graduated high school.
It would serve two purposes :
1) a living memorial to those killed from that cohort
2) a constant reminder that in America, you can be killed at any time.
WFB resident - Dec 16, 2012 8:26 AM
!!! 2) It would have been better, if a person with a gun could have stopped the nut
before he killed all those kids !!!
WFB resident - Dec 16, 2012 8:28 AM
astounded me to learn that 80 to 1 that guns are used to protect ! Wow , why is
there even a debate ?

* She was unaware of who Jones is, and how extreme/fringe/loony he is. All she heard was some juicy nonsense that she, for some wierd and bizarre reason, wanted to believe. This would be disturbing.
Or
* She knows exactly who he is and what he has said. This would be disturbing.
jman99 - Dec 16, 2012 10:45 AM
That's absurd.
You have thousands of National guardsmen through out America. Just post two of those guardsmen at each of schools like they do in Israel.
ahemmer - Dec 16, 2012 10:48 AM
Suffice it to say, I used it because I believe that Jones is correct with pointing out Obama's fake crying (wiping non-existent tears out of the far corners of his eye? really? I swear it was written in his teleprompter script: "now pause...use finger to dab at outside corner of eye...."). I also agree with Jones stance on how Obama wants to do away with the 2nd Amendment. I do not agree with a lot of what Mr. Jones believes in other cases. (It's simply the same as Paul Ryan liking "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand and not agreeing with her stance on religion. He just like the book and the spot-on story of what compares to where the U.S. is headed under Obama. It's the same as people going to see a movie with ultra-libs Susan Sarandon or George Clooney - even if one cannot stand their way-out-there political views, they may still like them as actors.)
And WFB: I agree with you. Violence and death happens around the globe. China is experiencing killings/attacks in schools (with knives and meat cleavers - not guns!). Would lefties have a knee-jerk reaction to outlaw knives? See the following link for a recent China school attack resulting in 23 people injured: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57559179/china-school-knife-attack-leaves-23-injured/ and to read about other school attacks in China.
I also have to wonder if the principal at Shady Hook had been armed, would she have been able to stop Adam Lanza when she first encountered him before he reached the classrooms?
Mr Balanced - Dec 16, 2012 10:52 AM
In Pearl, Miss., a gunman who killed two students and wounded seven at a high school was stopped by an assistant principal, who rushed to his car and got his gun. The assistant principal, running back with his .45, spotted the rifle-carrying shooter in the parking lot. Ordering the teen to stop, the vice principal held his gun to the shooter's neck until police arrived.
In Salt Lake City, a man purchased a knife in a grocery store, walked outside and stabbed and critically injured two men. He was threatening others, when a store patron with a concealed weapons permit drew his gun, forced the attacker to the ground and held him until police arrived.
In Grundy, Va., a disgruntled student on the verge of his second suspension at Appalachian School of Law shot and killed the dean, a professor and a fellow student. Two students, both off-duty peace officers, ran to their cars, retrieved their guns and used them to halt the attack. http://news.yahoo.com/yes-guns-kill-often-used-self-defense-070000428.html
ahemmer - Dec 16, 2012 10:53 AM
In addition, anyone thinking of entering a school and committing the murderous acts similar to Lanza may think twice, knowing that some people within the school are designated to defend the school with a gun.
Please explain why this is "absurd?" (By the way, I agree with the possibility of using the National Guard to protect the schools.)

1/6 is not particularly small.
For the record, I have no problem with trained (Im not talikng about a $50 CC "class" to get the permit) staff having secured access to a gun.
Mr Balanced - Dec 16, 2012 11:14 AM
We can fix these senseless shootings as soon as our politicians and certain people stop blaming everyone and everything but the person who killed. Overreactions are as destructive as doing nothing. Way too many are barking up the wrong tree.
I saw Obama’s speech live. He was faking the tears. Why I don’t know. Mr Pres is as hurt as anyone. But the fake crying? Didn’t help.
jman99 - Dec 16, 2012 11:23 AM
How do you put that in a job description? How do you pay and compensate for that?
What if your "designates" happen to be both gone that day?
No you are far better off to leave this to the National Guard. You know the quality and you know they are disengaged from the school community. Just keep them on rotation from school to school.
ahemmer - Dec 16, 2012 11:43 AM
As for "put(ting) that in a job description - easy. Just say "designated access to a firearm to protect the students and staff in ______ school." Throw in extra pay for training, maintaining training in use of a firearm. Is that so difficult? And you know what, jman99, I bet schools would actually have some staffers volunteer for the position!

I'd much rather have a detached professional making this kind of call. Teachers are too close to the parents ( Parents and siblings can be shooters just like anyone eles) and kids to do this sort of thing and I'd rather have the principal in the office calling 911 and coordination resources.
You need professional detachment in these situations. The guardsman is prepared to take out anyone. Anyone else may second guess themselves and open a window of opportunity. Action is the key.
I want a calm cool professional who does not miss to take control of the situation. Guardsman are already on the national payroll, use them ( at least as long as it takes to get your system set up Hemmer) this could all happen again tomorrow morning in a school near you.
You want to wait that long to put security in place?
I can't see why Walker has not done this already.
There have been 31 of these school shootings since Columbine, its not like they are going to end any time soon.
It could happen in Wisconsin tomorrow.

ahemmer - Dec 16, 2012 4:37 PM
And I disagree that Alex Jones is a " paranoid delusional freak" as you call him. He has a radio show and describes himself as a "libertarian" - very concerned about civil liberties and rights. The media loves to dub him a "right-winger" which he is not. And Jones does have some outlandish ideas, but I do agree with him on Obama crying crocodile tears over the Shady Hook tragedy. That's it. I agree with him on that one point. Understand?
ahemmer - Dec 16, 2012 4:52 PM
@jman99: I would venture to bet that the teachers in Shady Hook hiding in locked classrooms and closets would have felt just a bit safer if they knew that some in their school were designated to have access to guns and could protect them. And I disagree that we cannot designate teachers/principals/superintendents to have access to guns simply because they "know the students and parents" so they wouldn't be able to shoot and protect them against a killer(s) they may know? Ridiculous. If your life was threatened by someone you knew, and you had a gun, would you be unable to protect yourself simply because you "knew the parents" or "knew the kids?" What a stretch.
jman99 - Dec 16, 2012 5:05 PM
What about the ones who were killed, would they have felt safer?
You know, this all went down from beginning to end in 20 minutes.
How fast do you think a designated teacher could run from the gym to the gun locker, load something, run out, find the threat, assess it, and shoot it?
It's just not possible Hemmer unless every teacher was armed with a loaded weapon. Even so the teacher's first responsibility is escape for the students then to deny entry then to defend.
This person fired hundreds of rounds with a long gun which is far more accurate at distance than any handgun would be. He was wearing a bullet proof vest as far a I know. Your asking someone to do all this and do a kill shot to the head during a panic situation?
There are a lot of guys in Afghanistan fighting for the USA who would have trouble doing that.
Stop playing Medal of Honour on your X box and get with reality.
Mr Balanced - Dec 16, 2012 5:12 PM
Tell me more about Jones and why you call him such names like a “paranoid delusional freak.” Aren’t you one who calls yourself a libertarian? I don’t have much knowledge with Jones. I will be much obliged as to how you developed the claim “paranoid delusional freak.”
You seem to have a bad habit of changing what people say or not say at their blog or posts. I can’t figure out why you and others do that. Those types of comments coming from you have no way for the continuation with the debate at hand.
I did see Obama’s speech and much was unsincere (tears). There was no need for that. We all know President Obama and the rest of the world is grieving over this. I’m hurting very much. You too I bet. But fake tears?
jman99 - Dec 16, 2012 5:23 PM

decade now. He has made his name spouting conspiracy theories.
yert49 - Dec 16, 2012 6:05 PM
Surely not even you are going to politicize this tragedy are you? Spending money
on mental health is not the issue. Making the necessary judgement to
institutionalize people away from society is.
ahemmer - Dec 16, 2012 6:14 PM
And I sure hope that this does horrific incident does not provide yet another stepping stone (that the lefties love) to go after gun control. Guns do not kill people. The people pulling the trigger of a gun kill people. Just as it is so disgusting for the left/media to report on SUV's causing accidents (SUV runs over so-and-so, SUV crashes head-on, etc.) as if the SUV is to blame and is a living, breathing soul, rather than the driver. We've heard it all before. The SUV is somehow a living entity, cuz the left hates big gas-guzzling powerful automobiles. They chose to blame an SUV rather than the actual driver. Don't believe me? Read the Urinal/Sentinel. You will see that any accident/auto death in which an SUV is involved blames the SUV first and foremost. Disgusting.
We cannot shrug off the blame for Adam Lanza. He IS to blame. He killed all these poor little children and adults in Shady Hook. He did it. Not "the gun."
referee33 - Dec 16, 2012 7:01 PM
ahemmer - Dec 16, 2012 7:16 PM
An "alternative to hiding?" I agree. However, an alternative to hiding doesn't mean yet another area to go to and hunker down, waiting for an armed killer or killers to come hunting. Having a few armed individuals within the school is not an outrageous or unreal suggestion. We know that many in society are unstable. Many are violent. Some individuals will target schools or other populated areas (malls, fast food establishments, etc.) to carry out their evil deeds. Why not have a few well-trained, responsible individuals who volunteer to be "protectors" armed - with the know-how of how to use a gun? What is so wrong about that? Why continue to punish those who follow the law to a "t" and ignore the fact that many individuals are out there who have no regard for the law and have illegal (or legal) access to weapons? Let's arm the "sitting ducks" so they CAN defend themselves and save the lives of innocents in the process.
And let's always remember - guns do NOT kill people. People with guns kill people. Same goes for knives, SUV's, ropes, tire irons, etc. People are too blame. Not the tool they use and choose to create their mayhem.

So just stop the evil from getting in in the first place: Put National Guardsmen at the entrance. What's the point of defending the castle from the inside? Once the perimeter is breached half the battle is lost. Keep them out in the first place.
There are no acceptable deaths in a school situation.

They are not evil in the religious sense, it's more that they are broken and we as a society have no idea of how to fix them.
One of the key benefits of Obama care will be easier access because of expanded benefits to psychiatric ( especially paediatric psychiatric ) care and mental health care in general to help these parents out.

Im sorry you have a problem with the networks carrying a speech from the President of the United States at a time of a national tragedy.
I can no longer stomach this blog and the sickness of mind it exposes.
ahemmer - Dec 17, 2012 6:42 AM
Now Obama is clearly using the Shady Hook tragedy to make a pitch for going after guns yet again. He is USING this tragedy, MGarber, to further his OWN agenda. That is what I call a "sickness of mind." We have a president who pretends to cry on television because he cannot muster up real tears. Why is that? Why does he need to act? Why must he use the pronoun "I" throughout all his speeches and always say "I am the president" as if we do not know it. Obama is a narcisstic, self-absorbed, cold-hearted socialist. He must be cringing at the fact that the people of Newtown are finding solace in their faith - attending churches for prayer vigils. They are praying to a real God, not Obama.
jman99 - Dec 17, 2012 7:17 AM
So are you Hemmer. That's America.
"1) My deepest sympathies and heartfelt prayers go out to all the people in Newtown, Connecticut. I cannot begin to fathom what the parents who lost children are going through, or others who lost family members. Their lives have been forever changed, as have the lives of those children and adults who survived. The trauma and mayhem which occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School is shocking. "
I don't for a minute believe any of the above.
Why?
Because real sympathy is never tempered with the statements that came listed afterwards.
You had a political agenda posting this blog and you've used the death of 20 children as a vehicle for it.
Congrats.
You will most likely delete this post, so I'll put it up on Jakes blog as well.
Mr Balanced - Dec 17, 2012 8:47 AM
I prefer to not discuss any personal matters here at this blog. I thank you in advance for accepting my answer.
Mgarber,
Amy is pretty accurate with the bias between Obama vs. President Bush’s TV appearances and speeches. Maybe if you were not so one-sided towards Obama you could free your mind to see the extreme bias with the media in our country.
The definition of a narcissist is worn on Mr. Obama’s jacket. Much of what he and the media are doing is more towards removing guns all together than it is to mourn the tragedies that took place last Friday. You will do yourself good when you grasp and admit that even the party you tag along with is as guilty over this as the next. Politicians go to extremes with new regulations when tragedies like these happen. Look at what the media and many Democrats are now saying or trying to change: Those guns should not be owned or allowed in the hands of the mentally challenged. Another wrong idea and direction our politicians are moving us toward. Adam Lanza did not own those guns. How he got a hold of those guns is what we need to know more about. And how to better enforce ways to keep them out of the hands of people like Adam. He never bought those guns. Not from what I have read.
WFB resident - Dec 17, 2012 9:07 AM
ones I know will hold 6 hand prints in its memory ! With that the children would
never see or be aware of the guns ! I understand that you are thinking with emotion
and are not aware of many devises used to conceal / store guns !!! They are the size
of a bread box and can be mounted under shelves, under desks , in drawers , or
decorated right out in the open . Those who do not look for them would not identify
them as gun boxes . The problem is that your knowledge of guns is limited to what
you see . Not what is known ! Also the trend of mass shootings is down from the
90's and is far below the high in the 1930's !!! Did any of you hear how the mall
shootings ended recently ? Thank goodness there was a concealed carry user in the
mall !!!
Mr Balanced - Dec 17, 2012 10:33 AM
when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate.
their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air..
they could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.
they were filled with such joy, they didn't know what to say.
they remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.
"where are we?" asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.
"this is heaven." declared a small boy. "we're spending Christmas at God's house."
when what to their wondering eyes did appear,
but Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near.
He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.
then He opened His arms and He called them by name.
and in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring
those children all flew into the arms of their King
and as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace,
one small girl turned and looked at Jesus' face.
and as if He could read all the questions she had
He gently whispered to her, "I'll take care of mom and dad."
then He looked down on earth, the world far below
He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe
then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand,
"Let My power and presence re-enter this land!"
"may this country be delivered from the hands of fools"
"I'm taking back my nation. I'm taking back my schools!"
then He and the children stood up without a sound.
"come now my children, let me show you around."
excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran.
all displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can.
and i heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight,
"in the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT."

So you are aware, the school where the shootings took place is a "gun free" zone. Connecticut also bans assault weapons. Yet the killer still got one.
Removing guns is not nor will be the answer.

That's why we need a couple of National Guardsman at each school.
Mr Balanced - Dec 17, 2012 12:11 PM
The national media was once a microcosm for many in Washington. Now it's like a limb or the thinking behind too many Democrats. The national media is totally against guns in this country. You and I know that is true. It could be why stories like these never get published. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defensive_gun_use_incidents. One can only assume these are a smidgen of the thousands that go unnoticed
Think about this for a few moments if you can. What if some of these life saving stories were given equal time and print as the ones about those who abuse guns and the law? Undoubtedly more people would have a different and more balanced thought process about our gun laws and rules.

I know no such thing Mr. Balanced. I do know that the media does not report "take downs" by citizens with guns because on many occasions when they did, it led to others taking the low into their own hands in totally dis similar situations causing needless death and injury.
The police do not want to romanticize vigilantism. Ask any policeman.
I'm not a fan of the OK corral mentality. That's not a civilized country.
The use of Guardsmen at Schools until another solution is worked out is the only way to go. The National guard is there to keep citizens safe inside the USA. This is definitely a time to use them.

I prefer to not discuss any personal matters here at this blog. I thank you in advance for accepting my answer."
The only thing I asked was how long you had been lurking on this blog site. I see no personal information there, you already admitted that you do by your statements.
Mr Balanced - Dec 17, 2012 1:10 PM
I hope we can have good debates and compelling arguments back and forth. If OK with you, I must ask for a favor. Like I have others. Please read carefully what I say. I didn’t bring up any hint of “The police do not want to romanticize vigilantism.” Never crossed my mind either. The stories I gave are only a few of the possible thousands where guns were used to save one’s life or lives. As I would use mine to save me or others in the same situation. Vigilantes are like Charles Bronson in that old movie. Defending one’s life from a killer or robber or rapist, etc., etc., is not vigilantism. It’s called self-defense and staying alive in many cases.
Those stories, if reported by our media, would most likely change the perception about guns and gun control.
jman99 - Dec 17, 2012 1:38 PM
"As I would use mine to save me or others in the same situation."
Why would I ever trust you to do that? You could snap as quickly as the nest person?
What special powers do you have that allow you to determine exactly what is going on in a situation? You could be shooting just a s well at a plain clothes or under cover policeman as a shooter in any situation. You have no special training to protect me or mine. and, unless you actually face the situation you will never know if you can pull the trigger or not at that millisecond in time when it would make a difference.
Carry your gun if if it make you feel more secure, but don't you dare pull it out on my behalf, I'll not have your misjudgements on my conscience.
If you want to play protector of the public peace, join the police force or the army.
And by the way:
vig·i·lan·te
[vij-uh-lan-tee] Show IPA
noun
1.
a member of a vigilance committee.
2.
any person who takes the law into his or her own hands, as by avenging a crime.
adjective
3.
done violently and summarily, without recourse to lawful procedures: vigilante justice.
My definition was #1 not number #2 or #3 as you have alluded to. Charles Bronson does not enter my mind at all.

You are the one who brought your gun to this discussion, not I. Obviously it is very important to you to be seen in this light as as white knight defender or you would have never brought it up. I never asked for this information, you gave it freely.
You alluded to my misconception of your not having proper training to stand under fire during a fire fight, which by itself alludes to the idea that you have some training to do such a thing. I have no idea who you are, so disclosing where you got this training ( unless it was with Seal Team 6 ) is not "personal" information ( unless it is simply fiction and you want to hide like a poser, but I do not assume this ) as I would assume a multitude of people have done the same.
If you simply stop posting about yourself, you won't be open to questions. Once you do post about yourself you are front and centre.

ahemmer - Dec 17, 2012 4:01 PM
I do not think it is unrealistic to seriously consider arming certain individuals within schools - I would venture to bet that some may embrace such an idea. With proper training in use of a firearm, one or several individuals could become proficient enough to offer a line of protection should the school entrance be breached by an uninvited individual or group with ill intent. One has to wonder WHY the lefties on this site just seem to want more gun control (including Obama - he is using this incident to further his own "take their guns away" agenda). Guns do not kill people. People kill people. Just like the liberal media loves to report on those SUV's that seem to have a life of their own. SUV's run into people. SUV's strike someone...etc. Aren't the SUV's being driven by someone? isn't that person to blame? No, this harkens back to the lefties hatred of big gas-guzzlers. So, they MUST mention the SUV when reporting. Just pay attentiont to the news. If an SUV is involved in ANY accident, it will never be called a vehicle or automobile. See, the lefties hate SUV's. THe lefties hate guns. So them make guns and SUV's have a life of their own. The guns kill or harm people. The SUV's kill or harm people. Not the actual person pulling the trigger or driving the SUV!!! That doesn't follow the leftie narrative!

I'll wait to go after Obama and other politicians if they go after the rights of the law abiding people instead of the law breakers and overlooked mentally ill time bombs out there. Taking advantage of Obama's droll response to the shooting to attack him is as bad as what you accused him of doing by simply punching the clock as President for another day.

Mass murderers want complete control of the situation from beginning to end. this is why so many of them shoot themselves at the end. They stage something as close to perfect as they can get to because the control factor is important.
Obviously you have very little understanding of motivations.
ahemmer - Dec 17, 2012 5:23 PM
I also find it unsettling that he says "the United States needs to change." However, at least he is finally admitting what he wants to do to the country.
And sadly, Obama is USING this tragedy to go after the gun rights of citizens. See, Mucho, the lefties under Obama must "never let a good crisis go to waste." And sadly, the President himself cannot muster up real tears so he fakes it. And don't forget, Obama is the same man who voted in favor of infanticide while a short term senator from Illinois. The same man declaring that the "lives of innocents" in regards to Shady Hook were cut short. I think the babies born alive and then killed would also fall under the definition of innocents - but I didn't see Obama shedding any crocodile (or real) tears over them. Heck, Obama voted in favor of sticking scissors in their brains, then sucking them out to kill them. Or, after being born, put in a room without medical assistance to die.
Cold hearted? Hypocritical? You bet.
Doesn't that bother anyone?
Mr Balanced - Dec 17, 2012 5:36 PM
You just don't get it. Nothing you have said or produced will change how or why people do like what happened in Connecticut. Taking guns away, banning assault weapons (already banned in CT), or even stricter gun laws will not stop criminals or people with mental challenges to commit crimes of murder. Protecting the schools with better buildings is a start. Such as gates and surveillance. Arming those in school and allowing more citizens to carry and conceal is the only option to help stop what happened last Friday. You may not like this, but until you or anyone can produce a better plan that is proven, you won’t get much support.
Time to move on. You have no intention of looking at this rationally. All I am doing is repeating myself. What a waste

"What we face is more like a cancer than a virus. Our society has turned on itself, and these mass murders are the shocking fruit. The perpetrators of these crimes now typically turn their weapons on themselves and have essentially become societal suicide bombers. As the military knows, there is no real defense against a suicide bomber who has reached such a point of desperation and delusion that his own life doesn't matter.
Responding to this specific crisis with legislation would be a mistake that politicians will likely make.
Responding to the root cause of the crisis would be a better way to go.
And what is that root cause?
The destruction of the family.
I'm not discounting any other factors, but to address problems with our mental health institutions or virtual reality gaming or the drugging of our children or our gun laws or the media culture's glorification of such violence and not deal with the root cause of our societal decay are vain attempts to mask symptoms.
The statistics back me up on the destruction of the family being at the center of our national crises, including violence.
Before I cite the statistics, please do not take these numbers as a condemnation of single moms or dads. There is no condemnation. Many single parents are doing double duty and raising wonderful children.
But the numbers are hard to overlook.
(continued in next comment):
ahemmer - Dec 17, 2012 6:15 PM
Consider what our family brokenness has done to society:
* 3 in 10 children grow up in broken homes.
* In the African-American community, it's far worse: two-thirds of black children grow up with one parent.
* More than half of all babies are conceived out of wedlock.
* Of those conceived out of wedlock, 4 in 10 are aborted. And so, the cycle of violence begins.
* Of the survivors of abortion, half the children born out of wedlock end up in poverty.
Children from broken homes account for:
--63% of teen suicides.
--71% of teen pregnancies.
--90% of homeless and runaways.
--71% of high school dropouts.
--75% of all drug users.
--85% of behavioral disorders.
--70% of those in juvenile detention.
--57% of all prison inmates.
...What if our government policies unashamedly focused on the goal of reducing the fatherless and divorce rates? What if our laws profoundly preferred those who get married and stay married?
More importantly, what about you and me? After all, our laws only reflect our culture.
What are we actually doing in our families and communities to strengthen marriages? Is it clear in our social circles that sex out of wedlock is wrong? Are we holding young men accountable for their actions, demanding they take their responsibility as fathers seriously? Do men face any negative societal pressure for putting children and mothers at risk for the sake of fulfilling their own sexual exploits outside the marriage bond?
jman99 - Dec 17, 2012 6:18 PM
No, you see, Mass murder is way different than robbery. and besides, you are wrong:
"Gun law
In 1982 the city passed an ordinance [Sec 34-21][18]
Gun rights activist David Kopel has claimed that there is evidence that this gun law has reduced the incident rate of home burglaries citing that in the first year, home burglaries dropped from 65 before the ordinance, down to 26 in 1983, and to 11 in 1984.[19] Another report observed a noticeable reduction in burglary from 1981, the year before the ordinance was passed, to 1999. A 2001 media report stated that Kennesaw's crime rates continued to decline and were well below the national average, making citizens feel safer and more secure.[20] Later research claims that there is no evidence that [the law] reduced the rate of home burglaries [in Kennesaw],[21][22] even though the overall crime rate had decreased by more than 50% between 1982 and 2005.[23]
The city's website[24] claims the city has the lowest crime rate in the county."

"Many traditional wedding ceremonies include an open acknowledgment by all in attendance of their responsibility to do whatever it takes to help this new couple in their marriage. We should take that commitment much more seriously.
Every marriage faces profound times of crisis. Perhaps your prayer, phone call or offer to babysit could ultimately help save a marriage, keep a child from facing long odds and, dare I say, spare a community from another unspeakable horror."
Steve Elliott, Grassfire
I'd say that Mr. Elliott is on to something. Something much more profound than writing even more anti-gun legislation that does nothing - except take away our rights to bear arms. Perhaps President Obama should consult with Mr. Elliot? or would that go against Obama's master plan?
jman99 - Dec 17, 2012 6:24 PM
Almost all mass murderers are White males.
" Of those conceived out of wedlock, 4 in 10 are aborted. And so, the cycle of violence begins."
Impossible for them to be mass murderers just how does an aborted baby contribute to a cycle of violence? Do mothers who abort babies become gun toting mass murderers?
" Of the survivors of abortion, half the children born out of wedlock end up in poverty."
What an utterly stupid statement. Just how does one survive an abortion?
Did you even read this garbage before you posted it Hemmer?
ahemmer - Dec 17, 2012 7:07 PM
See, jman99, you may not like the facts, but those children who are often born to those who are basically children themselves start off struggling. Impoverished.
(By the way, this throws Obama's theory out the window - that in order for some to be rich, they had to take from someone else to get there...).
As a side note, just saw the headline from today's Urinal/Sentinel: "Obama consoles grieving nation." Within the article is this sentence: "Alone on a sparse stage after the worst single day of his presidency..." REALLY? Aside from yet again making this tragedy about The One, : What about Benghazi, Mr. President? In which YOU left four Americans, including a U.S. ambassador, helpless and allowed them to die!?!? Wasn't that the "worst single day?" Nah, guess not.
And, of course, Hillary Clinton is unable to testify as to this mess, cuz she conveniently fainted and hit her head and has a concussion.. she is "recovering at home"...my goodness. The chaos and mess and lies from this adminstration are unbelievable.
I would also venture to say the single worst day of Obama's presidency, in the eyes of half the country, is when this dangerous socialist got elected to office!!!
jman99 - Dec 17, 2012 7:34 PM
yes, I see no reason to punish the children for being born into poverty, but this does not a mass murderer make either.
Mr. Lanza grew up in a large colonial home in Sandy Hook. His Mother had left her job as a stock broker in NYNY.
It is a nice rant Hemmer. But he does not fit your Rant. He was not living in poverty, he was not black, his mother was married when she bore him and birth him. he was not born into poverty. His mother was well enough off to buy a Sig a Glock and a Bushmaster ( non of these are cheap ) and to use them as she wanted to.

As for owning guns, one does not have to be "well off" to own any. Where did that come from, jman99? And we all know that criminals often seem to have easy access to guns anyhow. And somehow, I don't think they pay the inflated prices that we common folk do when we buy guns legally...
And take your holier than thou comment: "shove your agenda aside and pay respect to the dead and the wounded..." and send an e-mail to Obama - who has disgustingly made this horrific incident all about him. With the mainstream media falling into formation and writing the glowing reviews of the compassionate (c'mon hand him an onion so he can fake some more tears!) Dear Leader - how moved he is, how difficult this is for him, how upset he is, how tough this is on him....gosh darn! he's a parent! AND he's the president!!!Give me a break or a barf bag....
As for hugging my kids, I do it every night. Do you even have any kids, jman99? And if so, how come you spend so much time on a computer typing mindless drivel? Are you neglecting your children? Why not try spending time with family? It may do you good.

That would be stupid to ban guns in more places ! Well unless you are not thinking

yert49 - Dec 17, 2012 10:29 PM
our inability to judge. But instead of making this about agenda politics, how about
going towards things that we know work. I believe that one of the reasons the left
is so fearful of the simpler, family values, and pro father agendas is that it is boring.
It does not feed into a "do what you feel" popular culture. Look how we have
emaciated young men in our culture. Why is it that you have to have a gay lisp?
We're these guys born this way? No, it was leaned behavior.
This is not hard. This is promoting the strength of the family. Look at what
happens every night on the streets of Chicago, D.C., Mexico, Why is it that the left
does not get outraged at all of the deaths in the black community? There is no
value on life with some of these young people. They will kill you as soon as look at
you. Why is that? Could it be that when the war on poverty started, we effectively
replaced the father with welfare and allowed the dad to skip out on his obligations
to his offspring. These idiotic government programs have dire consequences!
WAKE UP!

Amy, anyone would say something has to change after these attacks. Is it tighter gun control? Is it looser gun restrictions? Is it increased power of the mental health care system? That's the debate to be had. Calling out the President for saying the current state of affairs is unacceptable is ridiculous. I won't discuss the tone of his remarks, as I'm overseas at the moment and haven't had a chance to watch them. As I haven't seen it, I won't argue whether the tears during his address were real. However, based on the tone I've seen in this blog, I would guess that if he hadn't shown emotion you would attack him for not caring.
Regarding gun control, the debate has shifted so very few are arguing handguns should be banned. Guns don't kill people, but that's not the point. Guns are tools used for killing. The person pulling the trigger is responsible, but the gun makes it much easier. Are there violent sprees with knives? Yes, but a lot less people die than with semi-automatic rifles. Does that mean semi-automatics should be banned? Not necessarily, but banning an AK-47 is not the same as banning all guns. And implying that blocks an honest discussion.
Peter123 - Dec 18, 2012 1:18 AM
I agree with those on the right that we would be better off with stable families headed by two parents who are married (and happy to be married). That's not the same as saying children of all single mothers would be better off if their biological parents married.

Ever hear of Wayne Williams? or How about the FACT that 38% of murders are committed by Blacks that comprise only 12% of the population?
This is not a race or poverty driven issue, it's about whether or not our country's leaders respond in a rational, productive way. I am pretty sure that having a gun in a school is illegal in CT. How are more laws going to prevent this from happening again when existing laws failed? Does anyone argue that if there was an armed guard in each classroom that the death toll would be lower (ideally just 1)?
While the teachers of the school that hid and shielded the kids from the shooter are heros, One trained teacher, principal, or guard with a gun to take this loser out could have saved themself and a couple dozen others.
As the inevitable gun debate gains momentum we can either rally around reinforcing constitutional rights and empowering people to protect themselves OR further restricting rights and shifting more power to the lunatics and criminals. The very president that allowed a flood of guns to go walking into Mexico where hundreds of children have been massacred by them has no credibility in this debate.

Obama was going to tighten gun control for four years, regardless of the fact that
gun laws actually got looser during his first term. If I were you, I would be more
upset at the Republican congressmen who are 'jumping ship' and getting on
board with stricter gun control. In either case, when you do something tasteless
and justify it by saying that the other side did it so it must be ok, you are no
better than them. There is one thing about stating why you are for or against gun
control (which by the way we mostly agree on) and criticizing whether or not the
presidents tears were real while he is honoring the dead.
It's really too bad you couldn't have just taken a moment to honor the young,
innocent lives lost, and left the partisan politicking for another post.

Not true. Don't let your white guilt and "B" movies get in the way of actual facts.
Murderers by race in the US are disproportionately minorities : http://www2.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/offenses/expanded_information/data/shrtable_03.html
And Mass murderes are a little closer to proportionate but still slant toward minorities. Some of the most recent examples:
Jeff Weise - Native American killed 9 + himself in MN in 2005
Omar Thorton - African American- Killed 8 + himself in 2010 in CT
Nidal Malik Hasan - Palestinian American - Killed 13 in 2009 at Fort Hood
Chai Vang - Hmong American- Killed 6 in 2004 in WI
John Allen Muhammad - African American Killed 10+ people in Washington DC 2002
Lee Boyd Malvo - African American (John Allen's accomplice)
I quickly provided you with 4 minority lunatics in the past 10 years, if you can produce 31 "white males" in the same timeline without finding more "non-whites" then you can come close to supporting your claim "most".
Per the FBI: "Contrary to popular belief, serial killers span all racial groups. There are white, African-American, Hispanic, and Asian serial killers. The racial diversification of serial killers generally mirrors that of the overall U.S. population." http://www.fbi.gov/stats-services/publications/serial-murder

Your thinking comes from your heart or your liberal beliefs. Go ask a motorcycle owner what his biggest fear would be while riding. They will tell you ignorant or inattentive drivers. Why not ban them? Deer and turkeys are becoming a major fear. So much so few motorcycle riders ride at night (deer). Maybe you can lead the bandwagon on that ban? Should we take away phones that have texting or ban those with smartphones from driving? I’m not making fun of you, only poking holes in what has become, all too often, major regulatory changes by our lawmakers every time we hit a wall with issues like this one.
I think Yert49 made mention of family values and how welfare has taken place of the father (breadwinner) in many homes. That is a very astute observation. And the truth with our entitlement society. It is the number one source for the Democrats voting machine. If we could all agree on that, we could start a fix with these shootings and other problems facing our country. By placing another 20 million or so on welfare/stamps does not convince me that our President cares about family values and raising the bar for those on food-stamps and welfare. The best cure for all this is to grow our families with love, respect, God, and strong parents. If that happens, many will not need to live off our government.
Another problem that has been overlooked is this. How would the health org, Adam Lanza went to including his school, get that information about his mental challenges to the proper authorities? Right now that is not allowed. The mental health issue is the best place to start. Adam also didn’t buy or own those guns.
Amy is not politicizing this as many think. She is only pointing what has become obvious with President Obama and some politicians. They politicized this entire mess first.
jman99 - Dec 19, 2012 9:39 AM
"The mental health issue is the best place to start. "
So you agree with national support for mental health issues under Obamacare I presume since mental health issues are in no way tied to the ability to pay for health insurance as Mr. Lanza has demonstrated.
Mr Balanced - Dec 19, 2012 9:59 AM
Thanks for your response. Unfortunately I don’t see anywhere from your posts your actual understanding with the Affordable Care Act. One which I am in support of (better access to healthcare, but not what Obama gave us) but not in the least the way President Obama and Nancy Pelosi forced this on us. Since “Obamacare” is not the issue, I suggest it would be best for me to not change course at this time. “Obamacare” or any health plan this nation takes hold of needs to address this issue soon. Without wasting too much time trying to take away our rights to own a gun.
jman99 - Dec 19, 2012 10:01 AM
"I think Yert49 made mention of family values and how welfare has taken place of the father (breadwinner) in many homes. "
And just how would you place fathers back into those homes? What if the fathers are violent, is there any value to having a violent father in the home?
Peter123 - Dec 19, 2012 10:13 AM
My thinking comes from my belief that the interests of the two sides are to limit the access to dangerous weapons by criminals and to provide access to weapons which are used for personal protection, household protection, or hunting for law-abiding citizens of sound mental health. My thinking comes from the belief that these are both sound interests. I certainly disagree with Amy, Yert, and many others here (I think yourself included) about how much is needed for the second side. I also disagree with many here about the context in which the Second Amendment to the Constitution places the right to bear arms, in that I believe the text reflects a limited right.
WFB is right that mass shootings are not likely to kill you, as they are still distributed in a very large population. We don't outlaw lightning, but we do take certain measures to make it less likely to cause problems (such as lightning rods).
I have presented my belief that restricting purchases of assault rifles would not impinge on the legitimate interests of gun owners, listed above. These are disproportionately used in mass shootings and gun trafficking to the Mexican drug trade. Making it more difficult to obtain these would disrupt the supply chain for both groups. If it doesn't hurt what people legitimately want and it does hurt illicit intentions, it should be easy. I don't see the relevance of your comments about scaring motorcyclists.
Mr Balanced - Dec 19, 2012 10:13 AM
You keep missing the actual point to all of this. This is a sad and horrible tragedy that could not and never will be avoided if we keep rushing down the wrong path. There are those who will commit such crimes. Regardless of anything we can do. This is why banning guns is not the answer. Once a person has this mentality to be able to take away innocent lives and then take their own life (Islam terrorism ring a bell), there is not much we can do. But we can try to start with the problem: the person and their mental capabilities. To be able commit such actions and for these thoughts to grow inside that person (how about starting by removing these violent games these kids play all day) is where we must begin.
Bad parents or violent fathers will also be an issue that will be hard to avoid. But no father? More welfare and food –stamps are not the answers. More fathers and better parenting, along with family values and God in their lives, can’t hurt. History will back that up.
Mr Balanced - Dec 19, 2012 10:15 AM
Assault rifles are no longer made. Only old ones dating many years back are available to the public. And the rules are quite difficult to own one. No "assault" rifle was used. I think we went over this already. Excuse me
jman99 - Dec 19, 2012 10:21 AM
"Bad parents or violent fathers will also be an issue that will be hard to avoid. But no father? "
I would have to go with no father at home is better than a father who beats his wife and/or children.
If you do not have a system in place that can rehabilitate a father from beating his own children, you really don't have a mental health care system in place at all.
Start there, Obamacare is a great vehicle for this as it does not discriminate by ability to pay.
You seem to have a pretty specific agenda in mind, Why don't you just spell it out.
jman99 - Dec 19, 2012 10:34 AM
The difference between an AR15 and a Bushmaster is about $20.00 of hardware which can be purchased quite easily or made by a home machinist. The Bushmaster is based on the AR and share much of it's design with that weapon. Bushmaster in fact has a recall on their "civilian weapon" on going as it has been fount to fire multiple rounds on its own during the same trigger pull. My understanding is that other manufacturers have had similar problems with "cross over " weapons of this type.
This only illustrates how closely related the "Sporting Rifle " as the consumer derivative weapon is know is to the military/law enforcement model.
I've never met a deer hunter who used a 30 mag clip to go deer hunting. most of the ones I know use something like a bolt action 30.06 or a pump action shot gun using slugs.
I've never seen a deer using ballistic armour that requires either a NATO or .223 high velocity round to penetrate.
The founders had no problem taking down deer, bear, moose and wolves with musket balls and black powder.

Peter123 - Dec 19, 2012 10:47 AM
I'll confess I don't know the details of what to call guns. I've been firing once and didn't care for it.
In Connecticut, I believe it was a semi-automatic weapon with a long barrel, held in two hands. I use "assault rifle" to mean a gun which is not a pistol, which is still easily carried while firing, and which can rapidly fire a large number of rounds. This differs from a deer hunting rifle or sniper rifle in that those are typically fired from a stationary position. Am I using the wrong terminology? Probably. I apologize for that. If I am still unfairly characterizing the weapons used in these shootings, please let me know. I'm pretty sure I'm not.
ahemmer - Dec 19, 2012 10:48 AM
All the leftie frothing-at-the-mouth to ban almost every kind of gun imaginable will do NOTHING. All it will succeed in doing (aside from trampling on the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution) is allowing the criminals to have the upper hand in all aspects of society. It is truly disgusting how the Dems and Obama are indeed "not letting a good crisis go to waste" and USING the murders in CT as a tool for their anti-gun legislation. Unbelievable.
I hope that more states follow the leads of protecting the schools by allowing personnel in such to be armed if they so desire. Or, some have proposed having a police officer - armed and in a bullet-proof vest - at our schools. Either solution works for me. And these are REAL solutions, not the anti-gun, anti-freedom rants coming out of liberal-land. Think any nut job would think twice about approaching a school with an armed guard OR knowing that the personnel inside may have a weapon to defend themselves? Or, even if the nut job was so crazy as to not realize people could defend themselves, said nut job wouldn't be able to go on a murderous rampage of killing people who were unable to defend themselves. They would be stopped much sooner, saving lives in the process. Sure changes the sitting -duck equation, doesn't it?
Peter123 - Dec 19, 2012 10:56 AM
Has anyone here suggested banning every type of gun? Even most guns? Has President Obama? Has any elected official beyond local officials in the big cities? If you won't fairly characterize the positions taken by those with differing viewpoints, I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish here. I (and many others) have clearly been talking past you, and I'm pretty sure it's not because we haven't been specific enough in our statements.
jman99 - Dec 19, 2012 11:01 AM

ahemmer - Dec 19, 2012 11:31 AM
Has anyone here suggested banning every type of gun? Even most guns?"
Actually, a big leftie politician - Dem Diane Feinstein - has proposed legislation banning assault AND semi-automatic guns.
MOST guns ARE semi-automatic. The Dems ARE coming after our guns and want to squash our second amendment rights.
From the leftie site, Slate - here are guns/definitions explained. From Slate: "Semi-automatic: Almost all guns in the United States today, including pistols, rifles, and handguns, are semi-automatic. A semi-automatic firearm fires a single bullet each time the trigger is pulled."
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2012/12/the_gun_glossary_definitions_of_firearm_lingo_and_types_of_weapons.html
As a revealing side note, did you know that Mexico has some of the toughest gun laws on the books? With the drug lords and weapons practically running the country, that should tell you about how gun laws do little, if anything, to stop or curb violence.

Regarding the gun laws in Mexico doing little, that's an excellent point. I wonder if their lack of effectiveness has to do with a neighbor with incredibly lax restrictions on purchase of firearms. On the other hand, if Canada and Mexico both have more restrictive firearms restrictions than we do, I guess the key problem Mexico is finding wouldn't cause a headache on our side. How's gun control working out in Australia and Europe?
Regarding the Democrats, a quick search online finds a desire for restrictions on automatic and semi-automatic weapons, with a ban on assault rifles. It's stated to restore the assault weapons ban which lapsed in 2004. And the bill hasn't been introduced yet, so we can't see what it says. As Feinstein introduced the previous ban, it's reasonable to suspect this one would be similar.
I've only found one source online which even implies as much as you've stated. The Guardian (from the UK) states: "But on Tuesday Carney said Obama will support a bill that the Democratic senator Dianne Feinstein said she will introduce in January to curb the sale of automatic- and semi-automatic weapons."
From Conservativerefocus.com: "Paired with a twin version in the House, Feinstein's law would take aim at limiting the sale, transfer and possession of assault weapons, along with the capacity of high-capacity magazines."
Others, such as Fox News, MSNBC, and Politico agree with what I've found at Conservativerefocus.com or suggest less restrictions. I don't think all of these are in the bag for the Democrats. Curbing sales is not the same as banning sales, and banning sales is not the same as banning the weapons in general, so even the Guardian doesn't suggest as much as you've claimed. Please provide evidence, as my early efforts didn't support your claims.

Well. When the nut who sold his broken gun uses the cash to load up on ammo, your simple little rosy solution might have just made things a whole lot worse. you have to think more than one move in advance.
How many people were kept safe because Ted Kaczynski kept away from guns? How about the 12 people that Derrick Bird mowed down with a bolt action rifle and 12 gauge shotgun in the UK 2 years ago? Would it have saved JFK, Lincoln, or MLK if Feinstein's law was in place OR if "automatic/semiautomatic" weapons never existed?
It's plain naivete to presume that people are safer without guns or certain guns. The UK has some of the strictest gun laws in Western Civilization and they are the "violent crime capital" of Europe and their murder rate is 50% higher than in Germany where gun laws are more lax. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/5712573/UK-is-violent-crime-capital-of-Europe.html

Mucho's point (I think) is that the guns purchased in the buy-back weren't going to be used anyway. So buying them back isn't productive.
jman99 - Dec 19, 2012 7:50 PM
Its a microcosm of the "arms race" mentality that the USA have lived under since WW2. You have to have a better killing tool than the other guy in order to be protected. It brought the world close to the brink at least once.
Once the Russians decided that they no longer wanted to play, the arms industry need another place to make revenue. What better place to sell fear and need for self defence but to a nation that was already paranoid? Suddenly the guy across the street from you might be the guy barging through your door with his gun so you'd better be prepared. And tell the guy across the street that you have the bigger gun now and that he's fallen behind, so he better get the newest and deadliest to protect his home from you. And it goes on and on.
All you need is a population with no trust in their fellow human beings or their own government and you can sell weapons for ever. You don't need wacos, but they are really good to boost your sales if people are paranoid enough already> In fact it may be advantages to arm the wacos once in a while just to keep things really crazy.
Great marketing, great subliminal advertising and a lobby group in you back pocket has made this the single most successfully product campaign in the history of the USA.

Mucho's point (I think) is that the guns purchased in the buy-back weren't going to be used anyway. So buying them back isn't productive. "
Well in this case it was, wasn't it. Kids learned the proper way to handle a firearm in a well controlled environment. They have a good idea what a real round from a real gun could do to a body. On top of that responsible adults got to observe kids behaviours with guns and would caution parents if they saw something amiss.

First of all the shooter in CT was taken to the gun range by his mom just like the kids you now proclaim are "being observed" and will demonstrate some sort of warning sign. Like it or not, gun buy backs fuel some to get more guns and/or exposure to them.
Secondly, you post this "Logic even the right wing can get:

It does not relate to gun control in the slightest. "Pre-schoolers" are not shooting each other and the only logical conclusion is that you need to train them to respect what a "rock" can do so they don't. Taking the rocks away from the kids is less likely to stop them from hurting each other than respecting the threat another kid with a rock presents.

Nope. It makes the programs a joke. An unwanted gun can be surrendered to most police departemnts at any time without throwing more tax dollars at it. LosAngeles has a program now that forks over $100 - $200 gift cards and gets guns that the sellers would sell for 25% of that. These programs "work" because the Taxpayers are getting screwed by paying 2-10X retail for scrap metal.
The gun club did a public service by putting the money to gun safety and training classes. Even the IRS recognizes the NRA for being a public service institution.

hope for you whatsoever." -gorgedubuya
Even jman saw the point here. These buybacks are "feel good" events that overpay for scrap in many cases. This "Guns Save Life" group turned the waste of money into a practical public service of teaching gun safety and training to a group of youngsters.
That money went to gun safety. While handguns are banned in the City of Chicago it has the dubious distinction of being the gun-murder capital of the world. http://www.capoliticalreview.com/top-stories/gun-control-increases-gun-violence/
More restrictive laws are not the answer - More effective enforcement is.

While the events from Newtown, CT were tragic, and we all mourn the loss of these innocent children, we need to enter the public debate that follows with "clear minds" and "pure hearts".
Some quick facts about guns, murder, and suicide, for many of those in the news media and politicians who have repeatedly bashed their foreheads with their knees these past two weeks...
You are more likley to be murdered by a shotgun (3%), a knife (6%), or by someone's hand or foot (5%) than any type of rifle (2%), including the AR-15 used in Newtown. Handguns represent 47% of all murders regardless of caliber or clip capacity.
Children under 14 represent .3% of all homicides.
While those from 18-24 represent 40% of all homicides.
You are two times more likely to commit suicide with a gun than you are to be murdered by a gun (~18,000 vs. ~9,000 annually)
73% of all suicide deaths are white males.
80% of all firearm suicide deaths are white males
So now that we have clear minds, let's begin the debate with pure hearts.
First, we need to care about ALL of God's children. This means those from 18-24 too!
Second, we need to focus on what is causing our Children to want to kill themselves and others and less about the weapons being used.
Finally, as our society is only as strong as the family unit, we need to re-commit to the principles and values that make us strong: Fear of God, Love of Family, and respect for ALL life.
