The blog is a view of life, science, politics and education from an engineering perspective. As engineers, we are taught to view the world objectively. We can hope, believe and calculate a particular outcome, but natural laws are inflexible and pay no heed to who we are or what we believe. We must approach the objective dispassionately, while compensating for our own distorted perceptions. Balance is also a key element; balancing between the ideal and the pragmatic, balancing cost and functionality, balancing analysis with action, etc.
Scheduling routine critical self-analysis is the foundation to objectivity. If we do not fully understand and compensate for our own failures, tendencies, habits and skewed thought processes, we will not see the world as it is. Without a regular critical self-analysis we will see the world as we are and then fall prey to self-delusion.
Failure is a great teacher. When failure is coupled with perseverance, it produces the fruit of patience and humility. An engineer, fresh out of engineering school is typically set up for failure early and often. The failure breaks the new engineer of any ideas of self-importance, arrogance and book smarts. Only then can the new engineer be formed and molded into a productive element in the industry.
Thanks,
Bernie
Phil Mickelson
Phil Mickelson made the news earlier this week when complaining about the taxes that he pays to the Golden State. He mentioned the idea of moving to Florida to save millions in taxes.
“There are going to be some drastic changes for me because I happen to be in that zone that has been targeted both federally and by the state and, you know, it doesn't work for me right now,” he said. “So I'm going to have to make some changes."
California voters in November approved Proposition 30, which, in addition to raising the state sales tax, carries a menu of new tax brackets that hit millionaires like Mickelson hard.
Phil was defended by Tiger Woods who claimed that taxes were a key element in his decision to move from California to Florida.
California taxes:
- A 12.3% top state tax rate, up from 9.3%, on income above $1 million.
- A 1% state mental health surcharge levied on incomes above $1 million.
- A 3.8% Medicare tax rate, which includes a new 0.9% Medicare surcharge on earnings above $250,000.
And since Phil is self-incorporated, he pays an additional:
- 1% in state disability insurance taxes.
- 6.2% for state unemployment taxes.
- 1.2% in federal unemployment taxes (also paid by corporations in Florida).
- 0.1% in state employment training taxes.
On top of the income taxes, Californians pay high usage fees and property taxes (in comparison to Florida).
In 2012, Phil’s income was $61 million in winnings and endorsements. Gregg Wind, a partner at Wind & Stern, an accounting firm in Los Angeles, claims that Phil could save about $8 million on his 2012 taxes by moving to Florida.
Phil Mickelson back-peddled from his comments on taxation after getting hit with the firestorm that it had created and apologized for his insensitivity.
Comments made about Phil:
“He is a pampered 1%er”
“un-patriotic and selfish”
“Flee-bagger, avoiding the payment of his fair share”
And many comments that can't be repeated here.
My thoughts on Phil:
People pay to watch you play golf, not to talk politics. Don’t wade into politics and economics unless you have a backbone and can take some heat. If you want to move to Florida, go ahead and save $8 million, just don’t advertise it or politicize it. In this environment of hyper political polarization, it is best not to speak your mind if you are an entertainer…unless you are a liberal entertainer. But at least Phil was not advocating for a policy or policy change, he was just venting, and so would I if I was losing $8 million.

Why shouldn't those who are being taxed, taxed, taxed, seek to move elsewhere? Wouldn't most of us -even if we are not millionaires? Look at the very wealty who are leaving New York. Look at the Californians leaving to move to Florida. Why? To save more of their own money.
And those who are jealous or angry at Mickelson should re-examine why. Could it be that President Barack Hussein Obama has stirred up the contempt? seeking to divide the country even more? Taking more from the "makers" to give to the "takers?" On the federal level - WHY should those who work hard be required to pay more and more and more to the government simply for re-distribution as Barry sees fit? Isn't it ironic how what many deemed to be "The Great Uniter" has turned into "The Great Divider" - the likes of what this country has never seen before?
Oh, by the way, yet another hidden "tax" from Obamacare - targeted at smokers.
The Affordable Care Act — "Obamacare" to its detractors — allows health insurers to charge smokers buying individual policies up to 50 percent higher premiums starting next Jan. 1.
For a 55-year-old smoker, the penalty could reach nearly $4,250 a year. A 60-year-old could wind up paying nearly $5,100 on top of premiums.
Ah, we HAD to pass the bill to learn what was in it! And now we're learnin'!!!

@Pierre Del Norte: Stay classy, Pierre. Don't have much to say except to attack me, huh? Whatever makes you happy. You just end up making yourself look like a petty child. Perhaps Bernie may wish to use his "delete" option, since your nasty, personal attacks do violate the Discussion Guidelines to clean up his blog...

You listen to talk radio and Fox news. Neither one has anyone of them has anyone to challenge the the outrageous falsehood that get broadcast. They are either IQ screened, or have token representatives speaking for the progressive prospective. You know, like Juan Williams.
A one-sided stream of unchallenged bull scbhidt. That is my definition of an intellectual cesspool. That is the information pool you love to swim in. That is the alternative reality that republicans have created.
Well guess what? The voters of this democracy have seen through the screen of your bs.
Your game is up. As demonstrated by that completely embarrassing performance by our very own Ronny Johnson.
The gig is up. Hemmer can threatens all she wants. But the queen-bee has a reach of - maybe 50 voters. But like most conservatives - she thinks it is so powerful.
Little does she know.
Pierre Del Norte - Jan 26, 2013 11:53 PM
OK - just what in the heck are you talking about Hemmer? Please give us an example of what you are talking about. You know - that whole redistribution thing?
Do you mean taxes?
jman99 - Jan 27, 2013 7:46 AM
8 million dollars will not buy that back, and if it seemed that it did, would they be worth keeping?
Pierre Del Norte - Jan 27, 2013 8:49 AM
Would that statement have anything at all to do with the fact that Obama is the first African-American President of the United States? Hemmer - Please put your statement in the context of the last election. He has certainly "United" a majority of Americans. He won an unprecedented victory by exposing the extreme and often vicious mentality of the "conservative movement", of which you Hemmer are one of it's most rabid cheerleaders.
So, after having their posteriors kicked last November, the congressional republicans go on a retreat to do some soul searching. What did they conclude? It is not "what" they are selling, but "how" they are selling it.
Republicans have become the party of stupid ideas. From supply side economics to climate change to virtually everything else in their "Principled Playbook", they continue to believe they are "Right."
Here is a clue - The only way to keep the republicans from their current path of self-annihilation, is to figure out a way for Hispanic woman to give birth to middle-age white men. So hemmer - What do you think the probability of that might be?
When common sense, lifelong, moderate republicans like Colin Powell say that they don't recognize their party anymore - that is your problem.
Or, in the words of Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal - "republicans must stop being the stupid party."
He took the words right out of my mouth.
Was that classy enough for you clowns?
jman99 - Jan 27, 2013 9:35 AM
He's united the liberals with his policies
He's united the conservatives in their hate of him ( the only thing that conservatives are united about these days)

What you forget to include ios that those media above are more centrist (not
conservative) than what the right would like ! Also that they are in constant check
from the Left wing nut media that controls most of the media in this and many other
countries . So in conclusion your comment is more closely in allignment with the
PDLS side of thinking ! Lets start with the New Joke times ? to the LA cronicle ,from
MSNBC to CBS to NBC to ABC, to the Atlantic , to lets face it Thousands of like
minded cesspools !!! As Norte stated above ! lol... The fact thast you think the right
is living in a world of its own just shows how onesided and uninformed the PDLS's
and Dumocrats are !
Pierre Del Norte - Jan 27, 2013 12:29 PM
Spend a week watching "Morning Joe" on MSNBC and then a week watching "Fox and Friends."
Consider how issues are presented, how differing viewpoints are represented, the intellectual content of the discussion and debate.
I rest my case.
WFB resident - Jan 27, 2013 2:27 PM
look at how long the PDLS's media took to tell its followers that Benghazi was a
terrorist act ? At last count even your elustrious leader took ((( 2 weeks ))) to catch
up to the centrist media like Fox and talk radio ! Now to show your side please
inform us of one media event that even took more than (2 days) for the Right side of
the isle to catch up ? lol... I await your answer ! ....... after you stew for a while and
come up with nothing , start reflecting on how uninformed your medias is ! Better
yet , How biased it is !

Please retrain from name calling and character assassination. I appreciate Amy's comment. I understand that Amy has a point of view, but you do as well. Diversity of opinion is our strength and should be cherished, not torn down. Intimidation has no place here.

That one hurt. What - did hemmer fill up your email box with threatening "or else" demands to silence me? She is particularly good at silencing people - especially ones who call her out.
Did she mention which name she found offensive?
She has absolutely no problem calling her President every name she think she can get away.
So, now she has you doing her dirty work?
Come on Bernie - grow a pair.
Pierre Del Norte - Jan 27, 2013 4:50 PM
I happen to have a difference of opinion on just about every opinion hemmer spews. For example;
"Taking more from the "makers" to give to the "takers?" - ahem
This is right out of the fictional/delusional world of Ayn Rand and Atlas Shrugged.
The difference being Rand called them producers versus parasites. We all know that hemmer, along with Paul Ryan worship at the alter of Ayn Rand - it is well documented. So let's look at Ayn Rand -
Ayn Rand stands for two things.
First - Social Darwinism; Survival of the economic fittest; Class distinction of producers versus parasites; Anything that relates to the common public interest simply favors the parasites.
Second - Unfettered, laissez-faire free markets; Government as subservient to the private corporate sector; freeing private economic entities to pursue whatever their individual interest maybe.
Anyone who is capable of reading a US history book would come to the simple conclusion -
We tried all that - It failed miserably.
Oh - And let's not forget. She refused to take Social Security and Medicare based on PRINCIPAL. She didn't want to be a parasite. You know - one of them.
That was the case right up to her being diagnosed with cancer. With no health insurance, her medical bills threatened to consume all of her wealth.
Well guess what - She died a parasite.
This is the place from where hemmer, limbaugh, and the rest of the right wing crowd is coming from.
And Bernie - that is probably where you are coming from as well.
ahemmer - Jan 27, 2013 5:20 PM
And it is quite amusing how Pierre Del Norte cannot seem to comment without going after yours truly.
I'm lovin' it!
Keep it up guys - you just look like idiots.
Thanks, Bernie, for advising PDN that he needs to behave. Let's have some of that "civility" that the biggest phony-in-chief was calling for not long ago!!! LOL.
By the way, yet another hidden cost of Obamacare - a 3.8% fee to the government on any earnings on stock dividends! So, in additon to the newly discovered "smokers" tax of up to $5,000.00 plus! above their health care premiums, (see: http://nation.foxnews.com/obamacare/2013/01/25/obamacare-makes-smokers-pay-5100-more-year) Obamacare is now taking away from dividend earnings, too. Wow. Let's just sit back and learn more of how much the goverment is going to pocket towards "healthcare!" Talk about a government power-grab. Scary times ahead folks. And those who voted for this garbage - thanks a lot!!! You got the government (bigger) you voted for. Enjoy those entitlements at the expense of the country!

"...you just look like idiots" - hemmer
Come on now Bernie - See what I get for disagreeing with hemmer.
Without addressing any of the substance of my comments, you know like her devotion to Ayn Rand, she does her usual attempted hit job and then slithers back to the safety of her own queen-bee domain.
Domain? - I am sorry. Let's call it what it really is "An intellectual cesspool."
Just another outlet for RNC issued propaganda.
Pierre Del Norte - Jan 27, 2013 6:29 PM

I have seen a wide range of ideas. Some claim that Phil has a duty to save money for his family and future generations. It would be immoral for him to stay and pay.
Others claim that California was key in nurturing his golf ambitions/skills and Phil Mickelson has a duty to repay the state for creating an environment vital to his success.
But this isn't an 'all or nothing' proposition. There is a continuum to consider.
I think that Phil should pay taxes to California, but not $8 million per year. If California taxes were only $300,000 to $400,000 more than Florida taxes, it might be worth wrestling with the idea of staying in California. By creating a tax environment that is so onerous that instead of settling for some taxes, they will end up with none of it. 2% of $61 million is a lot more money than 13.3% of zero.
California can't develop their tax rates in a complete vacuum. They have to understand that there will be people like Phil and Tiger, who would rather move than pay.
Mucho - Jan 28, 2013 3:28 PM
It is not possible for Phil and his family to consume $10mm of State resources annually to justify the punitive tax rate he is getting assaulted with.
Here is a great paper on the net impact on millionaire migration based on tax rates in CA. Interestingly, it concludes that the tax rate impact is negligible because so many people are in CA because it is that location that enables their income level. However, Phil lacks the "utility" that a CA address gives him and minus the need to be theere, he is making a silly decision if he decides to stay.

the o should stay in states like Ill. New York, Cali, then those that voted against the o
live in fla, tex , wy, ND . Yes I do understand that the o won fla, but the state does
not tax like a PDLS state ! more traxes = dumocrats , less taxes =Republicans ,
the least taxes =Conservatives ! North Korea= PDLS child eating haven ,closely
affiliated to Dumocrats for they will fiscally eat their billioniares to pay for OWS ! Hey
what happend to occupy anyway ?
Mucho - Jan 30, 2013 11:03 AM
Great point WFB. However as the liberals wake up each morning to save the world, it is not enough that they give their time, talent and treasure to their pet causes, they have an insatiable desire to mandate their morality on the rest of soceity. i.e. Save the Whale but Kill the unborn, don't drill in ANWR but pass Ethanol regs that poison water sources and make food prices and imports soar, Smoking is EVIL - unless there is an unregulated amount of THC with your carcinogens.....
The redistribution scheme in ObamaCare and Liberal tax plans is how the Left impose their religion on others and erode the benefits of a free market Democracy.
WFB resident - Jan 31, 2013 12:40 PM
Dumocrats (yes all of them) that o care is not good ! lol... The latest I will post now
:"No, really, union heads are acting like no one warned them that costs would go up.
“We are going back to the administration to say that this is not acceptable,” said Ken
Hall, general secretary-treasurer for the Teamsters.
“I heard him say, ‘If you like your health plan, you can keep it,’” said John Wilhelm,
chairman of Unite Here Health, the insurance plan for 260,000 union workers. “If
I’m wrong, and the president does not intend to keep his word, I would have severe
second thoughts about the law.”
Why? Why? Why didn’t anyone tell these leaders about the costs associated with
“Obamacare”?
Yes why did they believe their media ! lol... Oh well I guess the horses
want a drink now !!!!! lol...
