The evolution of math in America...
(Thanks goes to my cousin, Steve (once again) for providing this lesson in math via an e-mail...LOL!!! Good stuff!)
------------------------------------------------
Last week I purchased a burger at a fast food restaurant for $1.58. The counter girl
took my $ 2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my
pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3
pennies, while looking at the screen on her register.
I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters,
but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the
transaction to her, she stood there and cried.
Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the
1950s:
1. Teaching Math In 1950s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5
of the price. What is his profit?
2. Teaching Math In 1960s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5
of the price, or $80. What is his profit?
3. Teaching Math In1970s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is
$80. Did he make a profit?
4. Teaching Math In 1980s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80
and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.
5. Teaching Math In 1990s
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and
inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the
preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20.
What do you think of this way of making a living?
----------------------------------------------
Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the
birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no
wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok. )
----------------------------------------------
6. Teaching Math In 2009
Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la
producciones es $80. Cuanto
dinero ha hecho?
7. Teaching Math In 2013
Who cares, just steal the lumber from your rich neighbor's property. He
won't have a gun to stop you, and it's OK anyway cuz it's redistributing
the wealth.

author met one such person.
It is just as obvious that the article is opinion; with an completely distorted view
of the lessons detailed.

Hemmers point for her in his second post ! lol...

(From the Merriam Webster dictionary.)
The process I am describing, ExTODR and Mr. Hicks, falls within these parameters.
And I think the article and observations, sadly true in many ways, still were rather funny... :)
Lighten up, people! Egads.
Carl Hicks - Feb 24, 2013 4:20 PM
Which is a shame since the dumbing down of this country is a problem, however
dishonesty by those discussing such problems is an worse problem.
Carl Hicks - Feb 24, 2013 4:53 PM
this distortion of reality. Is it because it blames liberals?
ahemmer - Feb 24, 2013 5:08 PM
And Carl, in regards to the truth of some of these "observations" - if you think this post blames liberals, you are exactly right! If the shoe fits, wear it! The goofiness of liberalism is clearly pointed out in the "topic for class participation" in the blog...
Just like liberal math: 2 + 2 = 5, cuz at least lil' Johnny tried really, really hard at solving the problem! Give him an "A" for effort, even though he is incorrect and all the dumbing down in the world in a pathetic effort to build up self-esteem is doing more damage to lil' Johnny than libs are willing to admit.
Carl Hicks - Feb 24, 2013 5:39 PM
just to blame liberals. And even more disturbibg is how you revel in your
dishonesty.
Pretty sad you can't be honest in discussing a true problem. With this type of
discussion of problems it is clear you don't care about finding a solution but only
care about blaming liberals.
yert49 - Feb 24, 2013 6:11 PM
Get a clue. This is an excellent post. Not only by highlighting the "dumbing down"
process through the years, but by poking fun at all you feel good, humorless,

I've never taken a math course which didn't have right and wrong answers on the major evaluations. The "any answer can be right" mindset tends to be in English and social studies essays (which are about how the argument is made). Sometimes there's partial credit for being on the right track, as the process is important. Of course, perhaps my background at Hartland-Lakeside, Arrowhead, and UW-Madison didn't touch on the liberal institutions Amy is decrying. I certainly can't speak for everywhere.
The problem is that Amy is distracting from the real problems. For example, an over-reliance on standardized tests due to a desire to quantify performance. Or an inability to put in teacher accountability because the teachers' unions don't trust the evaluation methods. Or the reliance of students on their calculators because the tests allow calculators, which means school funding relies upon their proficiency with calculators rather than understanding the math. Word problems are still a thing as of my time in school.
Regarding the logger, we can't know his profit because we only know the cost of production. Shipping is a substantial part of the cost for such products, and he's only got $20 left for it.
And for the story, obviously this is a problem with the kids these days. After all, there has never been an older cashier who had such a problem. Or a young cashier who could do the math.
Carl Hicks - Feb 24, 2013 6:57 PM

It doesn’t take a brain surgeon, or even Jethro Bodine, to figure out the meaning behind it. Our children are losing not just their moral compass from our schools, but their ability to compete worldwide. I won't even bring up the entitlement or socialism meaning within. That might be to much overload on that simple brain of yours.
Sadly I know you have one. Just not sure where it is located!

Yea, I thought so.
Evolution is also defined as; The gradual development of something from a
simple to a more complex form.
Devolution is defined as; degeneration to a lower or worse state.
So which definition fits what was described in the article?

You got the probelm wrong for 2013. It should be:
Amy bought a burger at a fast food restaurant for $1.58. This same burger cost $0.98 4 years earlier. Detail how much the failed stimulus package, artificially high transportation costs, minimum wage hike and mandated health care coverage contributed to the cost increase of the burger vs. how much horse meat the restaurant needed to add to keep the purchase price under $2.00.
MGarber - Feb 25, 2013 8:37 AM

simple to a more complex form."
Not strictly true. Complexity arises ONLY when the more complex lineage has a survivability advantage (which is often the case, yes). There are 1000s of strains of algae yet they arent necessarily more "complex" than their predecessors of a billion years ago.
But that is perhaps for Amy's topic of "The evolution of science in America..." (I cant hardly wait)
ExToDResident - Feb 25, 2013 10:56 AM
Agreed, in the case of biological organisms they don't necessary evolve into a
more complex form.
However, Hemmer's blog is not about biological organisms. It is about (loosely)
the devolution of math. Last I checked math was not a living thing.

PDLS's ! They are to absorbed in to what was not said , to even be able to discuss
the topic ! So I will try ,here goes. PDLS's the point she is making is that even when
we allow open reigns for the Dumocrats to fix the education problem . All that they
are and ever will be able to do is destroy it ! Even though the points were a
humorous attempt they do point out accuratly how stupid the PDLS ideas are ! So
can any of you PDLS's attempt to discuss the failure of the PDLS ideals ?? lol... we

Google the first sentence and you will find over 3 million entries for it. I looked at
a number of site the search found and the only difference between them is the
last comment for 2013. Some reference 2009 as the last "point" and others show
2012, which also references Obama.
It appears that Hemmer did little (if anything) to revise the joke.
WFB resident - Feb 25, 2013 1:26 PM

WFB: Excellent point. I see the lefties here have nothing else, so they target me (as usual) and complain about how old or new this story is, etc., when it first appeared, etc. So what, guys? Does it really matter? The story sure applies to the low expectations of students across the nation when it comes to learning math. LOL.
Whatever. Simple Obama methods - distract from the real problems, confuse people, and generate chaos. Then sit back and watch the fun begin!
Just like this silly "sequester" talk - which Obama was all for in 2011 when he vowed to veto any attempt at getting rid of the sequestered spending cuts, claiming there would be no easy way to avoid the spending cuts. What a difference a couple of years make... Now Obama is saying that sequestration is almost akin to the end of the world! The horrors that will happen! Now we have the usual "freakout" reaction being stirred up by The One if the government is required to simply slow down spending for a few days (and that's all the sequestration really amounts to.) Pathetic.
MGarber - Feb 25, 2013 2:28 PM
I missed that; which wnd.com "news" item was that reported by?
MGarber - Feb 25, 2013 2:48 PM
No it doest. Your tired "joke" has nothing to do with the actual demise of education in this country, and you doent even seem interested in actually discussing it. Do you hate America THAT much??
" LOL."
Are you on the same meds WFB takes?
"Just like this silly "sequester" talk..."
Going off topic, eh?; is that part of the "distract" "confuse" and "generate chaos" you were talking about?
Carl Hicks - Feb 25, 2013 3:34 PM
to avoid any honest discussion of OUR countries problems.
Their kind disgust me.
ahemmer - Feb 25, 2013 3:46 PM
A small blurb:
"The president's sequester strategy is like Howard Beale in "Network": "Woe is us. . . . And woe is us! We're in a lot of trouble!"
It is always cliffs, ceilings and looming catastrophes with Barack Obama. It is always government by freakout...
Mr. Obama thrives in chaos. He flourishes in unsettled circumstances and grooves on his own calm. He spins an air of calamity, points fingers and garners support. His only opponent is a hapless, hydra-headed House."
Read the entire article. Noonan describes the rule of Obama perfectly.
ahemmer - Feb 25, 2013 3:58 PM
I use the sequester example to compare to how lefties here - on this blog site - don't address the real blog topic, but would rather poke fun at:
1) what definition of "evolution" I used in the blog title (egads, can we get more petty - yes we can!),
2) how "stupid" this post is (way to go, Carl!!!)
3) then I am accussed of "dishonesty in discussion" (whatever the heck that means, thanks again, Carl!)
4) then Mr. Arrogant himself chimes in - Peter123 - who seems to think it's OK in math for no "wrong or right" answer cuz, well cuz English and Social Studies are more flexible! As long as an attempt is made to solve a problem - give 'em credit!!! Egads. And then we analyze the logger problem to death - saying we "don't know the cost of production." Get a grip, Peter. It's a story, using humor.
5) Then ExToDresident chimes in with a complaint that I did nothing to "revise" the joke... HUH? I was sent an e-mail, Ex. I thought it was funny. I used it as a blog topic. If I had "revised" it, you lefties would be complaining that I took liberties with someone elses work. Again, - egads.
6) But the best comes from Mr. Hicks at the end - accusing us of "hate" cuz we won't "discuss" the problems America is facing.... 'scuze me while I go bang my head against the wall...
Chaos. Plain and simple. The Obama way. The Saul Alinsky way.
ExToDResident - Feb 25, 2013 4:38 PM
Petty huh? You should listen to yourself (the queen of petty); as if that would ever
happen.
I made the suggestion (roughly) that instead of your using the word evolution you
should have used devolution because its definition more closely fits what the joke
was about. You summarily rejected my comment simply because you see me as
a liberal. How could anything be more petty than that?
Carl Hicks - Feb 25, 2013 4:47 PM

ExToDResident - Feb 25, 2013 4:53 PM
A complaint? I beg your pardon, did I direct the comment at you?
Apparently, nothing is ever clear enough for you to understand. I was attempting
to point out to Peter that you didn't change the joke any and therefore didn't add
to it as Peter had suggested.
In short I was defending you.
(Note to self; don't bother posting anything that is supportive of Hemmer's stance
because she doesn't deserve my support.)
ahemmer - Feb 25, 2013 4:56 PM
By the way, have I ever corrected your use of the word "to" vs. "too?" Are you a wee bit sensitive?
ExToDR: Now you come back and complain that I didn't use your "devolution" term? Then you whine about me being "petty?" Really? Don't you have anything better to do?
Carl Hicks - Feb 25, 2013 5:05 PM
mentioned is factual. Which is why I say this type of thinking is what is wrong

Why do you insist on being part of the problem?

And my goodness, the lefties here are bursting a blood vessel (I know! I'll soon get called out by anyone who has had a stroke for being "insensitive" - whatever).
I posted a column that I thought was funny - and a bit on-target - about the state of education in America. Little did I know that it would generate such a silly frenzy - about "honesty" and "partisan misinformation." Good grief. I just am shaking my head in disgust. Next up - my blog on Michelle Obama at the Oscars - totally disgusting! Get ready to rip me to shreds, leftie - rub some lotion on those fingertips for typing! :)
Carl Hicks - Feb 25, 2013 6:07 PM

MGarber - Feb 25, 2013 6:32 PM

"And my goodness, the lefties here are bursting a blood vessel..."
Well, YOU started it when you said "'scuze me while I go bang my head against the wall..." (and they say there's too much gore & violence on TV).
"Next up - my blog on Michelle Obama at the Oscars - totally disgusting".
Save yourself from being disgusting, and dont do it.
Peter123 - Feb 25, 2013 6:38 PM
Of course, you've failed to read my comment. About math, I say I've always seen answers marked as right or wrong, not whatever you feel like. Partial credit may be there, but a wrong answer is still wrong and marked as such.
Please bother to read my comment before attacking it.

teacher would grab you by the ear and get your attention if you were fooling
around without worry a parent would be upset, she would be fired in todays
world.
WFB resident - Feb 25, 2013 8:29 PM
would be allowed to do so here?" We are carl ! The problem is that the ideal is the

Peter123 - Feb 25, 2013 8:59 PM
Why have we dropped from the top ten? I already named several reasons why education in this country isn't everything it could be. Another is that other countries are making gains. Our educational system isn't flexible enough, as students don't all respond in the same way. A lack of parental involvement means many students don't have the right environment to succeed.

what they pay theirs ! Lets also put in dollar for dollar to what their kids are costing !
I am not sure if you realized that both countries that were mentioned are several
times larger (per person ) than the USA . In other words China for instance is 5
times as many people . but in your link it points out that China has just surpassed the
USA in spending on kids !!!If you did not catch that ,it means they should be 5 times
larger dollar to dollar ,but they are not !!!! Please reread your link and think about
per student ratios !!!
ExToDResident - Feb 26, 2013 12:25 AM
First of all where did I ever say anything about teachers pay?
Dollar per dollar? Do you understand just what you are saying?
Did you take in to account that China's economy is not based on the dollar, it is
based on the juan which trades at 6.6 juan per dollar.
MGarber - Feb 26, 2013 9:43 AM
How so?
"After building space shuttles we tossed in the towel. The fact that the fleet was retired and not replaced shows we just up and quit!"
The shuttle needed retirement. The replacement will be forthcomming eventually, the need is not strategically urgent. When sputnik came along, it became a strategic national priority to somewhat try to match Soviet math & science education (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=14829195). After we won the somewhat arbitrary Space Race, we got fat and lazy, like most winners do after battle.
The tragedy is that I see no alarm, no "sputnik moment", in watching the rest of the world surpass us. Just as we've outsourced much of our manufacturing, we're heading towards outsourcing our engineering/thinking. Yeah.... thats gonna work REAL GOOD in the longterm......
On the otherhand, Im heartened by the emerging (but not fast enough) "maker" (makerspace, or hackspace) trend in this country.
