As the world knows, former South African President Nelson Mandela passed away. Mandela has been hailed by many as a great man - one who devoted his life to fighting apartheid and working to better the lives of others. While all may not agree with Mandela's methods and beliefs (Mandela was a communist and did embrace violence early in his career), in the end Mandela rose above all and worked via peaceful, forgiving methods to unify his country.
Mandela's funeral was held a few days ago. Presidents, Prime Ministers, and other dignitaries and leaders from many countries were there. President Obama, representing the United States, was in attendance and gave a speech. Former presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter were also present.
During the funeral ceremony, Obama, the Prime Minister of Great Britain David Cameron, and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, were caught taking "selfies" of themselves. "Selfie" has become the new term used to describe the act of taking pictures of one's self - either alone or with others - with one's smart phone, then sharing them via social media.
Now, of course Obama WAS a bit giddy. After all, he was surrounded by many of those that he admires and respects - the socialist and communist dictators and tyrants of other countries. In fact, Obama even had the opportunity to shake the hand of Raul Castro - the dictator of Cuba! Wow - heady stuff. Anyhow, Obama must have been kind of pumped up - he was about to give a speech about Mandela and himself. The masses had cheered for him. The disaster known as "Obamacare" was forgotten for the day. Could all that have explained the lack of etiquette shown here?
Nah. I think it was just Obama behaving as Obama. Self-centered. Narcissistic. Classless. Disrespectful. (At least Michelle Obama appears to be the only adult in the picture, aside from the two unidentified men seated below the Three Stooges).
Do you know that there is actually a Tumblr website dedicated to tasteless "selfies" taken at funerals? See: http://selfiesatfunerals.tumblr.com/ (It has been updated with Obama's "selfie" - the site proclaims their work is now done! - and the owner will be shutting it down.) Interesting how the culprits on the Tumblr site appear to be children and young adults...hmmmm....and now - the President of the United States as well as a couple of Prime Ministers.
The Independent (from the U.K.) had this to say: "They'll look back on this selfie, years from now, and think "what on earth were we doing? We're world leaders, not a bunch of giggling teenagers. We're attending the memorial service of Nelson Mandela. Couldn't we have waited a bit before goofing around?"
Of course the liberals are rushing to Obama's defense on "selfie-gate." We are hearing about how the Mandela ceremony was a "celebration" - there was "dancing and singing." (Sure, such behavior was exhibited by some of the citizens in attendance - not the leaders of the many countries represented). We have also had the usual "but Bush did it!" excuse, as Bush was in attendance and had a selfie taken with U2 singer Bono. (Ah, but Bush is no longer the President of the United States. He was not there in a prominent position as THE representative of the United States, nor was he giving a speech. Even with a little leeway on this one, as a former president, Bush was wrong to shoot a "selfie" at the funeral.) And this whopper came out on CBS This Morning - from senior White House correspondent Bill Plante: "The president might have caused a diplomatic incident if he had declined the invitation to be in a photo with two long time allies." (Really? One would have thought Obama may have caused more of a diplomatic incident by ignoring the funeral of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher...but I digress...) And haven't liberals been reminding us all of how we should be oh-so-respectful of Mandela! We MUST respect this great man. Is this behavior by Obama what passes for "respectful" in liberal-land?
Just think for a moment if one of your own children would be caught shooting a "selfie" at a funeral. Ask yourself - would you think such behavior would be OK?
I personally would not. I find it hard to believe that many people would find such behavior acceptable.
Think Obama will suffer any consequences for his childish, bad behavior at the Mandela funeral ceremony? No. The Narcissist-In-Chief has once again succeeded in embarrassing the United States. Just business as usual.
