News, Information and Ideas on how to deal with hearing loss in a hearing world. Plus a few other topics!
The next generation of phone for the D/HOH is here!
For those of you that have difficulty using a phone or understanding what the person on the other end is saying, Sprint has now come out with a new phone that also works with a relay service. No more telling an operator what you want to say!
Also, did you know that if you go to the SprintRelay.com website, that you can order phones for the D/HOH from there? It's also usually priced lower than if you went into the Sprint local store. Plus, they have specials for customers that are D/HOH. I've yet to find those by going to my local cell phone providers' store.
Here's the article on the 800i phones. Have a great week!
AN INNOVATIVE TELEPHONE FOR INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCING DIFFICULTY HEARING ON THE TELEPHONE
Sleek, Smart, SIMPLE!
Now individuals with hearing loss can be sure of what their callers say – on every call – with Sprint’s new CapTel® 800i phone. The Sprint CapTel® 800i phone combines the convenience of a traditional telephone with the text capabilities of the internet to display captions of what the other person is saying right on the telephone. Captions appear virtually at the same time as the person speaks, allowing callers to enjoy the natural flow of an interactive telephone conversation.
Sprint’s CapTel® 800i phone is the latest offering in the CapTel® line, joining the CapTel® Model 200 – a captioned telephone designed for use with traditional analog phone lines. CapTel® is a free service that allows a person to use their own voice for speaking and listening, while reading word-for-word captions of what the other person is saying. Sprint never charges CapTel® users for receiving captions. Long distance charges will be handled just the same as they are today, according to the user’s long distance telephone provider. Captions are available in both English and Spanish and are available free of charge, 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week.
The Sprint CapTel® 800i phone works on any telephone line (analog, VoIP, DSL, or digital cable telephone service), bringing with it the advantages of the telephone with text capabilities via the internet to read captions during telephone conversations. The following are required to use the Sprint CapTel® 800i phone:
- Landline telephone service (can be analog, VoIP, DSL, or digital-cable phone service)
- High-speed internet connection (broadband, not dial-up)
- Standard electrical power
- Router (may be necessary depending on how many devices are hooked up to the internet)
The Sprint CapTel® 800i phone is ideal for individuals with some hearing ability and for those experiencing progressive hearing loss who are struggling with understanding what is being said on the telephone. This service is expected to help an estimated 28 million Americans with hearing loss – to understand and communicate clearly over the telephone.
Some of the benefits of the Sprint CapTel® 800i phone are detailed below:
- The captioning service is free and available 24-hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week.
- Captions appear automatically on all calls – incoming and outgoing. No need for callers to dial through the captioning service first.
- Captions can be turned on or off at any point during a call.
- The display screen tilts for comfortable reading or lies flat to mount the phone on the wall.
- Adjustable volume control (up to 40dB) for captioned calls. The volume button is easy to see and adjust during a call.
- One-touch access to Sprint CapTel® Customer Service (during standard business hours).
- Easy-to-follow menu with Yes/No questions.
- Phone Book storage for over 95 names and telephone numbers.
- Speed-dial keys for one-touch dialing and frequently called numbers.
One of the greatest benefits of the Sprint CapTel® 800i phone is the automatic routing of inbound calls to the captioning service without the necessity of dialing a toll-free number to reach the CapTel® Call Center first. CapTel® Operators using voice-recognition technology transcribe everything the caller says into text, which is instantly transmitted to the Sprint CapTel® 800i phone over the Internet. This process is transparent to the other party and can be turned on or off at any time before or during the call.
The Sprint CapTel® 800i phone can be customized according to the user’s preference, including the background, font size and color. When a call is completed, the user can save the captioned conversation for later review, allowing the caller to concentrate and participate in the phone conversation.
The Sprint CapTel® 800i phone works with headsets, neck loops, or with other assistive listening devices to maximize the audio quality or enjoy hands-free use. Users will just plug the headset or assistive device into the 2.5mm or 3.5mm audio jack located on the Sprint CapTel® 800i phone.
