News, Information and Ideas on how to deal with hearing loss in a hearing world. Plus a few other topics!
A Loopy Idea that Works!
Do you know how many expensive 'upgrades' there are for hearing aids? Did you know that most of them cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars? Did you know that there is one that is already on your hearing aid and costs you nothing? It's called a telecoil. All hearing aids (in most states) have to be delivered to their user with a working t-coil. This means that your audiologist has to 'activate' it by putting one additional program on your hearing aids. There should be no charge for this. Some of you may know of this program by another name. Telephone program.
Back in the old days, if you didn't have the t-coil in your hearing aid and went to answer the phone, most of us would experience 'feedback'. You know, that whistling noise that everyone could hear but you? The t-coil is a very small wire inside your hearing aid. It only costs a few cents for the manufacturer to put it in there. Yet, very little is said to the person getting the hearing aids about all of the wonderful 'free' things this will enable you to use it for. Why there is not a brochure explaining all of the uses of this one little program is beyond me.
One of them is, using induction loop system. The following article explains this older technology that has pretty much been ignored by all of those people trying to make as much money as possible from Hearing Aid 'add-ons'. By pushing the little button on the back of your hearing aid when entering an area that has a loop system, you have just enabled yourself to hear anything said inside of that loop in true FM sound. No background noise. No competition with environmental noises. Your own personal sound system! Wow!
