West football team moves to state semis
Waukesha West's varsity football team, anchored by a brilliant performance by its entire defense, defeated visiting Middleton Saturday afternoon, 27-10, to advance to the WIAA Division 1 state semifinals for just the third time in school history.
The Wolverines held Middleton (10-2) scoreless in the final 27 minutes and allowed the Cardinals just 73 yards of offense in the entire second half.
Middleton scored first in the game, scoring on the first possession of the night, marching 80 yards in just nine plays to take a quick 7-0 lead.
But from there it was all West. Junior running back Joe Schobert, who finished the night with a 246 yards rushing on 36 carries, tied the game by scoring on a 3-yard run. West took the lead for good on the first play of the second period when junior quarterback Brandon Berghoefer scored on a 1-yard sneak.
Other points for the Wolverines came on two 30-yard field goals by sophomore kicker Steve Drida and a 4-yard touchdown run by Schobert.
On defense, West got big games from Matt Losiniecki, Brandon Larsen, Dallis Ramos-deLeon, Kevin MacCudden, Daniel Konowalski and Calvin Boller.
West (11-1) will play Kenosha Bradford (11-1) next Friday or Saturday. The winner of that game will advance to the state championship game at Camp Randall Stadium on Friday, Nov. 19.
