Meijer wants store in Sussex

Village of Sussex - The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer company is planning to construct a 200,000-square-foot retail, grocery store and pharmacy complex at Highways K (Lisbon Road) and 164, according to village officials.

Village Administrator Jeremy Smith said he anticipates the company will make its conceptual presentation for building plans and zoning approval at next week's village Plan Commission meeting. Representatives of the company met with village officials earlier this week to discuss those plans.

Smith said he anticipates about 60 percent of the store will be devoted to groceries, and the remainder of the store will be retail. According to its website, the company operates nearly 200 supercenters and grocery stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky . It recently announced plans to build three other stores in the Milwaukee metro area.

    Bring it a little south to Pewaukee...all we have are 3 Pick 'n Saves and a Costco and WalMart right next to one another...

    Would love to have a Meijers. The have great produce and awesome deals. This will bring more jobs to the area which we greatly need no thanks to Obama.

    I would LOVE to see some competition for Pick N Save other than Piggly Wiggly. Let's face it, if Pick didn't put the pig out of business, Meijer wont either. Piggly is a throwback, it has a niche. Pick N Save however, has gotten progressively worse in every way, most of all prices and produce. A little competition never hurt. As far as the farmland thing goes, yes it sucks, but how long do you think it was to remain farmland? Plus there's the whole JOBS thing....

    While your at it, why not bring in K-Mart and Big Lots. Just what Sussex needs is another big box store. Ever notice all of the empty parking spaces available at Shopko, the empty strip malls, the vacated bank building and the dilapidated property that used to be home to Marchese's Danceland. Let's clean up and fill up what already exists with businesses that will be enhance the character of the community -- not another likely to be vacated big box store.

    Great news! Hopefully that spurs more retail growth. Meijers is a nice store.
