Sussex man charged with drunk car crash, infant daughter injured
Village of Sussex – A 29-year-old man was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court on Jan. 21 after allegedly crashing his vehicle while intoxicated and injuring his infant daughter on Sunday afternoon.
Ian K. Anderson was charged with one count operating while intoxicated causing injury, operating with prohibited alcohol concentration causing injury and misdemeanor bail jumping. The defendant was out on bail after being charged with one count of misdemeanor hit and run last September.
The responding officer said he found the car sitting in a ditch on Richmond Road around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 20. Anderson was standing on the side of the road holding his daughter, according to the complaint. The officer said in the complaint that the defendant seemed unsteady on his feet, and when asked what happened, allegedly said he did not remember. The officer noted in the complaint that the defendant allegedly smelled strongly of liquor and his eyes were bloodshot.
The officer asked if the defendant and his child were OK, and the defendant said he believed so. Ambulance personnel later noted that the infant’s right hand seemed to be bruised and swollen, according to the complaint.
According to the complaint, the officer allegedly noticed unopened beers in the vehicle and a water bottle that contained a brown liquid suspected to be alcohol. There were also three red plastic containers the defendant said contained gasoline, including a container on the floor in front of where the child was sitting in his child seat, according to the complaint.
Anderson allegedly failed all field sobriety tests conducted and vomited several times before police were able to conduct a breath test, the complaint reads.
If convicted of all counts, Anderson faces up to four years and nine months in prison and up to $18,000 in fines. The defendant’s next expected court appearance is Jan. 25.
