Food drive way behind 2008 giving levels

There could be empty plates for some families at the rate this year's Yule Feed Families food drive is going.

Donations that were trickling in during the first week of the drive, which benefits four local food pantries, more than tripled in the second week, but have a long way to go before the drive wraps up Dec. 21. Giving this year is at less than 20 percent of what it was last year at this time.

Since 1991, Yule Feed Families has been benefiting the North Lake, Pewaukee, Hartland and Kettle Moraine food pantries. The matching drive is sponsored by Lake Country Rotary Club and Lake Country Publications.

Going into this week, $490 was collected, a big jump from $160 in Week 1. Plus there were 76 grocery items brought in. Since the Rotary Club and the newspaper will match 70 cents on the dollar and 40 cents for every grocery item collected, that brings the total giving so far in the drive to $1,396.80. (Lake Country Rotary and Lake Country Publications each cap their matching gifts at $2,000.).

Among the larger donors this past week were Diane Allen of Town of Lisbon, who gave $300 and a bag of groceries. Kate Pieper of Hartland donated $100. Betty S. from Nashotah contributed 70 groceries.

Here's how you can help. Send or bring a donation to Lake Country Publications, P.O. Box 200, 810 Cardinal Lane, Hartland, WI 53029. Make checks out to a particular food pantry or to Lake Country Foundation, a fully tax-deductible charity that partners with Rotary.
