Food drive makes strides
Lake Country families, organizations and businesses rallied this past week to give the Yule Feed Families food drive a shot in the arm going into the final week of the drive.
Twenty-nine donors, from individuals to businesses to groups, contributed 615 groceries and $7,330 in cash - more than 10 times the amount given in the first two weeks of the drive sponsored by Lake Country Publications and Lake Country Rotary Club. That brings the total given so far this year to $7,980. Including the match given by the newspaper and the service club, that equals $11,980 so far, meaning the match cap has been reached.
As impressive as this past week has been, the numbers still show that giving is trailing last year's amounts dramatically. Last year's record-setting giving topped out at $31,297 and 566 groceries. With less than a week to go, we are only at about one-third of giving in cash.
This year, local pantries are facing unprecedented demand, as the fallout from the economic downtown has forced families to turn to these local organizations for help. As part of Yule Feed Families, Lake Country Rotary and Lake Country Publications each agree to match giving at the rate of 40 cents per grocery item and 70 cents per dollar up to a maximum of $2,000 for each of the two organizations.
This past week, the big donors include Debra and Mark Kames of Town of Delafield who gave $2,000; Hartland-Lakeside's North Shore Middle School students who gave $1,400 in their penny wars; James and Kris Ordway of Town of Delafield, who gave $1,000; and Mark and Carolyn Gusinda of Town of Lisbon, who gave $800. One local company, which asked to be anonymous, brought in 550 groceries. O'Neill Engineered Systems of Hartland donated $400. Steven and Janet Catlett of Pewaukee donated $200.
Among the many donors who gave $100 were Terry Burki of Hartland, Jim and Diane Sweitzer of Pewaukee, Richard and Denise Ryan of Town of Merton, Michael and Sharon Memmel of City of Delafield, David Bergles of Pewaukee, and Kristien and Ralph Petermann of North Lake, and Mark and Mary Hollister of Town of Delafield. Lake Country Quilt Guild gave 65 groceries.
If you are interested in giving, please drop off or send donations to Lake Country Publications, PO Box 200, 810 Cardinal Lane, Hartland, 53029 before noon on Monday, Dec. 21. Please make checks out to the pantry of your choice or to Lake Country Foundation, a nonprofit local charity that often partners with Lake Country Rotary Club. Remember, the drive ends next week Monday!
