Man accused of embezzlement at Ethan Allen
Worker told police he used money to pay mortgage
Waukesha - A former employee of Ethan Allen School for Boys was charged last week with embezzling more than $16,000 from the juvenile detention facility.
Michael T. Grochowski, 47, of Greenfield was charged Jan. 4 in Waukesha County Circuit Court with a felony count of theft.
According to the criminal complaint, Grochowski, who worked in the business office at the facility in the Town of Delafield, is accused of writing checks to himself and allegedly signing the name of his supervisor.
A Waukesha County Sheriff's Department investigation revealed that between Sept. 13, 2010 and Feb. 5, 2011, 10 fraudulent checks totaling $16,657 were deposited into Grochowski's account at a Greenfield credit union, the criminal complaint said.
Grochowski was questioned by the Sheriff's Department on March 21, and he admitted to writing checks to himself and depositing them in his account, the complaint said.
Grochowski said he "perceived an opportunity to author a check to himself and record it as if it was a payment to a vendor," the complaint said. Grochowski told authorities he intended to pay the money back, according to the complaint.
Grochowski said he signed the checks using Douglas' name and at other times would use his own name, the complaint said.
The complaint noted one check was dated Jan. 31, 2011, and was made out to Grochowski for $2,000 and had the signature of Douglas. However, Douglas had retired four days earlier.
Grochowski said he used the money to pay his mortgage and other everyday living expenses, the complaint said.
He is scheduled to make his initial appearance in court Jan. 23.
Ethan Allen was closed last year as part of state budget cutbacks.
