Dousman man arrested for 7th drunken driving offense
Waukesha - A Dousman man, sentenced in 2008 for his sixth drunken driving offense, was charged Jan. 18 for driving intoxicated once again.
Michael A. Laur, 34, of N2639 Highway Z, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court with a felony count of operating while intoxicated, seventh offense.
According to the criminal complaint, a City of Oconomowoc officer saw a vehicle driving south on Highway 67 at about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday at a high speed. The officer pursued the vehicle which turned into a driveway and questioned Laur. The officer noticed the odor of intoxicants and his speech was slurred, the complaint said.
Laur was asked where he was coming from, but he "was not able to give an answer," the complaint said. Laur also told the officer he did not have anything to drink, the complaint said.
Laur failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody, the complaint said. At the Waukesha County Jail authorities confiscated a container which tests showed contained the synthetic marijuana, K2.
Laur was last arrested Nov. 8, 2007 after he was followed for 30 miles by an off-duty Fox Point police officer.
According to reports, officer Donald Kriefall was leaving Friess Lake School off Highway 164 in Richfield after coaching basketball when some parents told him a man who appeared to be drunk was about to leave the school. Kriefall followed the man, Laur, for about 30 minutes and saw Laur's car drifting and he called 911 to report a suspected drunken driver.
At one point as the officer followed Laur near Thousand Oaks subdivision in Lisbon, Kriefall witnessed Laur's car pass a pickup truck in a no-passing zone and reached speeds of 70 mph.
Laur was arrested at his then Town of Lisbon home. He had his two daughters, ages 10 and 13 at the time, in the car.
In March 2008, Laur was sentenced to two years in prison and three years of extended supervision for his sixth offense.
Laur is currently being held in Waukesha County Jail on $10,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 2 for a preliminary hearing.
Along with the Nov. 8, 2007 arrest, Laur was previously arrested for drunken driving in August 1996, November 1997, February 1998, June 1998 and April 2003, according to the criminal complaint.
