Parent volunteers to take over Wales soccer program
Village of Wales - Parents seeking local control over the village's recreational soccer program have been given the ball and will run with it for the next year.
The one-year time span will serve as a trial period in which the village will assess whether the program can be run by volunteer parents, or needs to be run by an outside organization.
Village of Wales President Jeff Flaws said a compromise was reached after a troublesome last few years led village officials to consider the possibility of having a private club handle the program.
"We had gone through three or four recreation directors over a relatively short period of time," Flaws recounted.
The soccer program, in particular had been a problem for the directors to manage. As a result, the Park Commission reviewed the administration of the program and discussed turning it over to a private club to handle.
"There was a fairly large group of parents that came in and were opposed to giving up local control," Flaws explained.
Flaws previously agreed with some of the parental concerns over the possibility of contracting with an outside organization, especially relating to higher costs.
The group asked to be given a chance to run it more efficiently.
The commission favored allowing the parents to run the program, but with the conditions that they get a parent to volunteer to be on the Park Commission, not only for soccer, but to fully participate, and that a couple of individuals agree to work on a soccer subcommittee.
"They need a subcommittee to handle all the administrative stuff that goes along with it," Flaws said of the soccer program.
A number of parents volunteered to serve and will be given one year to see if they can successfully administer the soccer program. If they are unsuccessful, the program will be turned over to a private club.
"The understanding is that this is the chance to show that this is a viable option and we will revisit it in 2013 or early 2014.
"We're in a holding pattern right now, but we hope it goes well for them, and for us," Flaws added.
