Raccoons are the main dish Saturday

Most of the time people try to avoid raccoons at all costs.

People want nothing to do with those pesky creatures that oftentimes make their way into our garbage cans causing nothing but headaches.

But this weekend raccoons will be welcomed - and eaten - as fresh raccoon meat will be served to many hungry individuals looking for a meal one might think of for a reality show.

However, this won't be a reality TV show, as people will be willingly chowing down on some roasted raccoon meat as part of the 85th annual Delafield Coon Feed.

The dinner is 5 p.m. Saturday at the Delafield Legion Post Hall, 333 N. Lapham Peak Road.

A cash bar opens at 4 p.m.

In addition to roasted raccoon meat, each dinner includes mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing, sauerkraut, coleslaw, bread, coffee, milk or water. Desserts will be provided by the Delafield Legion Auxiliary.

And for those not daring enough to try some raccoon, an alternate meat (ham or turkey) will also be available.

Tom McNulty, who died in 1991, started the event in 1927 with his hunting buddies to raise money for youth programs in Delafield.

After his death, McNulty's wife, Lillian, has led the yearly event.

Additional help comes from the Delafield Legion Post and St. John's Northwestern Military Academy for the use of their kitchen facilities.

As usual, with the help from members and friends of the Delafield Legion Post, the food is still prepared using McNulty's secret recipe.

The cost of the dinner is $12 for adults and $6 for children.

"Coon Feed" shirts will be sold and raffles will also take place throughout the evening.

Proceeds from the dinner go to Delafield American Legion Youth Programs, and proceeds from the T-shirt sales go to the Waukesha County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America of which McNulty had been president.

For more information, call Dale Hansen, (920) 285-1446, LeRoy Stein, (920) 474-4737 or Delafield Legion Post 196, (262) 646-3930.
