Trailer used to recycle scrap metal; fund youth mission trips
Village of Wales - While the community has been celebrating the season of giving, someone passed by All Saints Lutheran Church recently and decided to do some taking.
The Rev. Roy Nelson said the church discovered that someone cut the lock off a small storage trailer the church uses for scrap metal recycling and took off with the trailer and about $400 worth of scrap inside.
The trailer has been an important tool to help fund the church's youth mission trips, said Nelson.
"They've gone to South Dakota to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation; last summer they did an urban mission trip in St. Lois, and this summer they are going to do another urban mission trip," said Nelson.
Nelson said the benefits of the youth mission trips are twofold, being meaningful to those they reach out to as well as the youth themselves.
The scrap program is a win-win too. "We want to be green, to care for creation and keep stuff out of the landfill, and the bonus is we are also sending people on mission trips. It's really a win-win," said Nelson.
The scrap program has saved a considerable amount of waste from the landfill. According to information from the church, 180,000 pounds of scrap have been recycled through the program. That equates to 51 cars or 2.8 million empty cans.
The scrap program has contributed more than $10,000 to the youth budget and contributed $2,200 to a new alarm system.
The church is not quite sure when the trailer was taken. It's not unusual for other members to use the trailer for other needs, so it's not uncommon for it to be gone from its usual parking place. "It took several weeks before we realized it was gone," said Nelson.
The church reported the theft to the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department; however, Nelson said it's hard to track something that is so common in the area and that doesn't have a license plate or other identifying markers.
"It's too small of a thing to claim on insurance. But that's fine. We'll get another trailer. I'm confident God will provide another trailer," said Nelson.
The church is hoping that someone will donate a trailer they are not using. The church is looking for a trailer no smaller than 5x8 feet with no less than a 13-inch wheel unless it has a tandem axle and a capacity of no less than 2,000 pounds.
