Yule Feed heads into final day
Surpassing last week's robust giving this week, Yule Feed Families heads into the home stretch with a lot of momentum, but the ability to surpass last year's unprecedented giving is in doubt.
This past week, a seeming army of givers delivered checks to the Lake Country Publications office totaling $11,785.10 by the end of the day Monday. Complete with the match from Lake Country Rotary Club and Lake Country Reporter, that brings the total so far this year to $31,624.20.
If no more checks come in, but far behind the total from last year, a record-shattering mark of upwards of $90,000.
The drive officially ends today, Thursday, Dec. 20, at 5 p.m. Checks can be delivered to Lake Country Publications, 810 Cardinal Lane, Suite 210, Hartland, WI 53029. Make them payable to Lake Country Foundation, or the pantry of your choice: Kettle Moraine Food Pantry, Pewaukee Food Pantry, Hart land Food Pantry or North Lake Food Pantry. Checks made to the Foundation will be divided among the four pantries. (Please do not make out checks to Yule Feed Families.)
In addition, the volume of groceries also stepped up this week, bringing the total to 355.
Under the terms of Yule Feed Families, donations of groceries are matched at 40 cents each and cash at 70 cents on the dollar. The newspaper and the club have capped total matching at $2,000 each, so that has been fulfilled for the 2012 drive.
This week's giving was paced by four givers, who provided more than $1,000 each, including the student council at Hartland-Lakeside School District, which gave $1,200 and 151 groceries. Pewaukee Kiwanis Club gave $1,024.10, the club's second major gift this year, and Jim and Kris Ordway's family donated $1,000. An anonymous Pewaukee giver contributed $2,000.
But giving was widespread and in amounts large and small. A total of 56 individuals or organizations stepped up, including Mark and Carolyn Gusinda or Pewaukee for $900, Aspen Homes in Pewaukee for $500, and an anonymous Oconomowoc couple for $500, and there were 16 other givers who wrote checks for $100 or more, many for in $250 or more. And there were a number of checks for $10, too.
Major grocery givers include Lake Country Quilt Guild and second graders at Swallow School, which gave 97 and 65 items, respectively.
