The Kettle Moraine stories in 2012 that made headlines:

Second silver

Kettle Moraine ran into unstoppable freight train Marquette for the second year in a row in the WIAA state tournament, but once again, it came in the state championship game. This time, the 2-1 loss in the Division 1 title match was much closer than the 6-0 outcome one year earlier.

Marquette hasn't lost a match inside the state in two years and had a 26-6 edge in shots. Kyle Ihn made 10 saves.

The Lasers topped Kenosha Bradford in the semifinals and Neenah in the quarterfinals, both by 1-0 counts. Bret Perinovic and Brandon Strobel scored the game-winning goals.

The Lasers didn't win the Classic 8 Conference this year, with Arrowhead taking that honor while an injury-plaged Lasers nursed themselves back to health. But the season ended in the best spot possible at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

Second helping

The Kettle Moraine girls golf team established its best-ever finish at the WIAA Division 1 state meet, shooting 682 and finishing behind only Homestead (671) over the two-day meet in Madison.

Senior Leighann Cabush, who edged out rival Emily Joers of Waukesha for the conference title, took third place individually behind Jessica Reinecke of Verona and Joers.

Others on the team were Ally Amadon, Lindsay Schmidt, Kathryn Tavares and Carlee Dawson.

Hurdle me this

Kettle Moraine junior Alex Sharrock won the 300-meter hurdles at the WIAA Division 1 state track meet in La Crosse, running 37.64 seconds to take the trophy, despite coming into the race seeded seventh.

Sharrock also finished seventh in the 110 high hurdles (14.98).

Mack Reidy took eighth in the discus, and the 1,600 relay team with Sharrock, Joe Keal, Ryan Vinhal and Joey Janz also took eighth. Jon Abernathy qualified for state in the 100 but couldn't compete due to injury.

Semi sweet

The KM boys volleyball team matched its deepest run in the WIAA state tournament, ultimately falling to Burlington in the state semifinal at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Wauwatosa.

The Lasers won theirsectional and then upset higher-seeded Wauwatosa East in the quarterfinal. Seniors Adam Martell and Sean Leahy finished the year with All State accolades.

Emmer takes over

The Kettle Moraine girls basketball team picked up new leadership after the program asked JoEllen Dickert-Sturtz not to return after five seasons as head varsity coach.

Janine Emmer was hired as her replacement for a team that had just one senior on last year's squad.

The boys basketball team, meanwhile, started the season 6-1 with a couple of wild outcomes, including a 103-81 victory over Verona and a buzzer-beating winner on a full-court play with 0.4 seconds left against Oshkosh Lourdes

Diamonds in the rough

In a wild 5-4 victory over Mukwonago in the regular season finale, Kettle Moraine secured a share of its first Classis 8 baseball title and first conference title since 1987.

The Lasers finished with a 16-5 league record and recorded just the second conference title in school history. The team turned a double play with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to preserve victory after rallying for two runs in the top half of the inning.

Oh so close

The Kettle Moraine/Mukwonago/Oconomowoc boys hockey team came achingly close to its first state berth since 2007, taking a 2-1 lead on Marquette in the sectional final with 10:22 to play. But in a span of 92 seconds, Marquette scored the tying and go-ahead goal, ending the Lasers season at 22-4-1 - the second best mark in program history.

The co-op did win the Classic 8 Conference title and has a strong crew of returnees this season.

Oh so close, part II

The Kettle Moraine girls soccer team reached the sectional final for a second straight year, and for the second straight year, Waukesha West won that battle, this time in a 1-0 outcome.

The never-ending hockey game

The Kettle Moraine Glacier, a co-op featuring players from numerous schools, made its first appearance at the WIAA state tournament, playing an incredible four-overtime game before falling to top-ranked Onalaska, 5-4.

Playing at the AlliantEnergy Center in Madison, the third-year program capped the year at 20-7. The Glacier rallied for three goals in the final period to force the tie. This year, the Glacier program is housed at Brookfield Central, though Kettle Moraine still takes part.

String music

It was a good year for the Roecker family and Kettle Moraine tennis.

Led by coach Brett Roecker, the tandem of Maddie Strunsee and Zoe Roecker (Brett's daughter) won a match at the WIAA Division 1 tennis meet this fall. The same can be said for then-freshman Chayce Roecker last spring, who won in his first state appearance.
