Missing owl spotted in Hunters Lake area

Lisa Rowe with the Wildlife In Need Center (WINC) said Wednesday morning they have located great horned owl Dakota that was stolen from his cage this weekend.

Matthew R. Kuhlemeyer, 18, and Dilan S. White, 17, of Dousman were charged Tuesday with felony burglary and criminal damage to property. They were released on $5,000 bonds and have a Dec. 5 preliminary hearing.

They took the owl to a nearby residence, took photos of it, but Dakota got away and flew out over a lake before disappearing. However, one of the photos appeared on a Facebook page and an anonymous tip to the Sheriff's Department about the post led to the arrests.

Rowe said they are sure they have located Dakota in the area of Hunters Lake because they have called to the owl and he has responded. The owner of the property he has been frequenting is allowing WINC officials access. They plan to set up a feeding station and hopefully attract Dakota and soon return him to safety.
