Morning fire at Lake Country Foods
No one was injured in after a fire was reported at Lake Country Foods Friday morning. The Oconomowoc Fire Department was dispatched around 8:30 a.m. to a reported sprinkler water flow alarm at 132 Concord Road.
Upon arrival, smoke was showing from the third floor of the exhaust tower on the
building. Initial reports had indicated flames were visible on the roof. This was incorrect. Only smoke was showing. All employees had evacuated prior to arrival.
"Working closely with Lake Country Foods staff, we were able to determine that two sprinkler heads were operating over a 'powder drying line.' The burning was contained inside the power dryer ductwork," said City of Oconomowoc Deputy Chief Glenn Leidel in a press release.
Leidel said the sprinkler system cooled the ducts enough to contain the fire and the dryer line involved was disconnected from the rest of the building. Various access panels in the duct system were opened and the smoldering cocoa
powder product inside was removed and extinguished, he said.
The fire and smoke were contained and did not affect other areas of the plant or warehouse.
Leidel said there were no injuries to the employees or emergency personnel operating on scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but is accidental.
A damage estimate is not available at this time. However, damage to the building,
equipment and contents was minimal due to the rapid activation of the sprinkler system limiting the spread of the fire. Clean up of the areas involved is in process.
Fire departments from Okauchee, Summit, Ixonia, Ashippun, Dousman, Stone Bank and members of the Western Waukesha County Rapid intervention Team assisted at the scene. Units from Hartland Fire Department and Stone Bank Fire Departments provided standby coverage at the Oconomowoc Fire station during the call.
No further details are available at this time.
