Okauchee man found guilty in video store theft
Adam Matter entered a guilty plea to retail theft from Vangard Video, an incident that occurred this spring.
Matter, 26, of Okauchee waived his right to a preliminary hearing in Waukesha County Circuit Court on May 21. Matter faced three felony charges:one for possession of narcotics, another for robbery with threat of force, and one more for retail theft. He entered a not guilty plea on June 6 and was in court for his trial Thursday morning where he was found guilty of retail theft.
According to court records, in a plea deal, charges were deferred except for misdemeanor retail theft. He will serve nine months in jail with credit for 39 days already served. He will then be on probation for one year and required to maintain complete sobriety, be employed full time, pay court costs and also pay $8,193 in restitution to Kmart, Walmart and Target for other incidents of theft.
Police arrested Matter, who allegedly robbed the Vanguard Video store in the Town of Oconomowoc wearing a mask in April.
According to the criminal complaint, police suspected Matter of the Vangard robbery because he was unhappy with the business over monetary issues. After he was arrested, Matter admitted that he went to Vangard Video at about 7 p.m. on April 15 wearing a homemade ski mask and demanded money from the clerk. He received between $60 and $65 and fled on foot to Misty Meadows subdivision, where he took off the clothes he was wearing and put them in a plastic bag, the complaint stated.
The Okauchee man was charged with felony theft in another incident in which he allegedly stole thousands of dollars worth of DVDs from other stores.
The drug charge related to an incident from last December at the Delafield Walmart.
