Sprinkling ban in Pewaukee

The Village of Pewaukee has issued a lawn sprinkling ban effective until Aug. 7, at which time the Village Board will re-evaluate the need for continuing the ban.

The ban is in effect because of extremely dry conditions and "concern for the water levels and the decreased pumping rates of the village's various municipal wells."

Residents and businesses are encouraged to take whatever measures they can to conserve water.

Hand watering of flowers, gardens, trees and shrubs is still permitted, but the village suggests it be done in the evening to reduce water evaporation.

  1. Why do people water their lawn? Grass always comes back. Our grass goes to brown every year and comes back to green once it rains again. Any time I see someone with a bright, green lawn amongst the sea of brown ones, I just think how wasteful or egotistical that person is.

Sure, water your garden, and your flowers, but your lawn doesn't really need it unless it's fresh sod or newly planted seeds or something.

  3. Pewaukee Citizen shows how little he knows about out municipal water system and is just a selfish person. We do not have an inexhaustable supply of water since most municipalities are sucking it from the same underground areas. Water levels keep dropping and increasing radium as well as increased water rates to pay for such things as more wells and costs of dropping the well pipes lower and lower. Look at the water problems they have in Waukesha. Rates going way up, supply going down. We need to cut down on the wasted water. Just look at Menards who water their traffic islands. Most of that water just runs off and down the sewer! What a waste.

Kelemvor has the right idea. BTW, my lawn is completely brown. That's fine, I don't have to cut it. ( More time for barley pops). The grass will come back, always has for the past 30 years. PC needs to think of his neighbors instead of just himself!!!
  4. The headline says "Pewaukee" but the body of the story says it's the "VILLAGE" of Pewaukee...so I'm assuming (perhaps in error??) that this is only for the village, not the CITY of Pewaukee???
  5. Yes, you yard yuppies make me sick as well. Water your lawn? I can't think of a better way to waste resources.
  6. PC
Didn't your parents teach you to share nicely? A municipal well is a shared
resource. If you want individual control of your water- go get your own private
    water supply!
  7. Does the City of Pewaukee have a similar ban? Alternate days watering?
  8. Pretty ridiculous of the City to go from no ban to a complete ban. Clearly they didn't assess the situation soon enough to take some mediary steps.

For those who have young lawns (3 new subdivisions located in Pewaukee) this will kill their lawns, mine included. I'm sure the city will be on me with fines when my yard is a dustbowl.

For those who consider a green lawn "yuppie", keep in mind there are trees in those lawns as well. Guess you don't like trees either.
  9. Pear1 - I'd love to drill my own private well, but the local governement won't let me.
  10. I called the City of Pewaukee - this only applies to the Village.
  11. My lawn is the only one in my neighborhood that is going brown. My neighbors all tease their turf by using automatic sprinklers every other day and mowing short. I never water the turf, just shrubs and trees, mowing long. The grass always comes back and I save resources. Four adults live in our household, consuming an average of 3400 gallons per month. Most of my neighbors use around 30,000 gallons per month during the growing season, most going on the turf. They pay twice for all that turf watering, once for the water and again for the higher sewer charges, even though most of the water does not go to waste treatment. Where I live, outdoor water use is restricted to even/odd days, depending on house number and to hours between 10:00 PM and 10:00 AM year around with a few exceptions such as for new sod or newly planted trees and shrubs and for contracted power washing.
  12. If you do some research you will find that yes grass will go dormant and still come back, UP TO A POINT. After a period of time (ask any lawn expert) grass will die.

My question though is what about all those that get their water from Pewaukee Lake for their lawns?
