Oconomowoc's Betty Christopherson shares story of winning $6.3 million
City of Oconomowoc - It was a cool, windy fall day outside, but inside the Kwik Trip on Brown Street things were busy. Not with the lunch rush, but with an afternoon press conference held for Betty Christopherson who won the $6.3 million Megabucks.
Christopherson purchased the ticket while stopping on the way to visit her niece. While she's played the lottery for a few decades using notable numbers, last Wednesday's ticket was simply a quick pick.
The Oconomowoc resident lives at the Berkshire Senior Community apartments and said it wasn't until very early Thursday morning she realized she had the winning numbers. She said after realizing she's won millions, she couldn't even yell out in excitement out of respect for her sleeping neighbors.
Christopherson bounced from media interviews to photos and hugs with family before accepting her giant check from the Wisconsin Lottery. The afternoon carried on with some cake and more photos.
The winning numbers were 02, 11, 20, 22, 26, 41. According to the lottery, the retired Christopherson chose to take the $6.3 million jackpot's one-time lump sum cash amount of $4.68 million. She will receive $3.15 million after taxes.
For selling the $6.3 million winning ticket, Kwik Trip earns a $100,000 commission. Lottery retailers who sell winning tickets with prizes of $600 or more earn the equivalent of 2 percent of the prize, up to a maximum of $100,000.
