Merton woman Maelyn Lind remembered as hero to both spa and family

Maelyn Lind, 38, of Merton was killed on Suday Oct. 21 after the estranged husband of one of her co-workers attacked Azana Salon & Spa in Brookfield. Two others, Zina Haughton, 42, and Cary Robuck, 35, were also killed.

Lind's daughter Kaela Lind and father Keith Hanson spoke about her late Tuesday at the Stone Bank Fire Department from a prepared statement.

Kaela Lind said that Maelyn was excited about being a new grandmother, usually wanting to see Xander and Lily (both born earlier this year) as soon as she got home. Kaela said she was “the most caring, loving, outgoing woman" who was full of life and passion. She added that, “best of all, she was the coolest mom.”

“She died a hero, not only to those at Azana on Sunday, but she was also our hero. We love you and miss you dearly,” Kaela Lind said.

Keith Hanson explained that the family initially received a text message from someone inside the salon who said Maelyn was “in there, trying to save Zina’s daughter and got shot.” The family took it as hearsay until they heard from a deputy sheriff on Monday who verified that “something of this nature had happened.”

“Reports are coming in from the Sheriff’s Department that Maelyn had intervened to save Zina’s daughter. I said that it doesn’t surprise me, because that was Maelyn,” Hanson said.

Funeral arrangements are not yet available.

More information to follow in Thursday's papers.
