Water off at Village Hall in Merton
Village of Merton is under a water bottle advisory at Village Hall. A water sanitation technician tested the well water in the building and found traces of coliform bacteria.
The Department of Health says that total coliform bacteria can come from the soil, in water that has been influenced by surface water, and in human or animal waste.
The Department of Health also states that most coliform bacteria do not cause disease and any strains (like E. coli 0157:H7) that can cause serious illness are rarely found in drinking water.
More testing should pinpoint the cause for it and Deputy Clerk-Treasurer Julie Ofori-Matmüller said that water technicians will be returning a few times for follow up tests.
They hope to have the water in the building up and running on Monday.
In the meantime, employees and visitors have been asked to drink from water bottles (which they're providing) and not use any indoor plumbing. The firestation has also been advised to use other facilities if they need to wash any of their vehicles.
