DA: We can't end heroin epidemic with incarceration only

Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel shared startling numbers with a local Rotary Club Monday which illustrate the rapid increase of heroin use in the county.

Schimel discussed how the drug abuse - which usually starts with prescription pain pills - is not associated with the back alley junkie you would imagine. Schimel said the vast majority of those using the drug are 24 or younger.

He said the increase of opiate-related deaths in the county has risen from 2.19 per 100,000 people in 2000 to 8 per 100,000 people in 2010. Another comparison shows that more than 40 opiate-related deaths occurred in the last year compared to 23 traffic-related deaths in the county.

Schimel's message is part of an effort to get the message out about the epidemic and educate people on how to watch for signs of the drug abuse and how to help stop it.
