Jury: OAW not negligent in Melka case

A jury ruled late last week that Arrowhead High School was not negligent when football player Adam Melka suffered a brain injury in a game in September 2005.

The ruling came after a 3 1/2-week trial.

A lawyer for the Melkas said his clients were "very disappointed" by the decision and would discuss their options.

At the heart of the trial was whether Adam Melka suffered a concussion during a scrimmage and whether he was properly evaluated by the trainer, Jason Ables of Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin.

An attorney for the Melkas suggested the jury award Melka between $2 million and $4 million to cover medical expenses, loss of income, and pain and suffering.
