City moves forward on sheriff's contract

City of Pewaukee  - The Common Council moved one step closer to contracting with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department for police services when it voted 5-1 Wednesday night to direct the city attorney to move forward with a contract.
The decision came during the council’s last budget workshop. Representatives from Ehlers and Associates, the city’s financial consultant, reviewed the city’s 2010 proposed budget and determined the budget would be balanced with a sheriff's contract. The city could maintain $100,000 in contingency funds, and would be able to purchase firetrucks and maintain a favorable financial rating by Moody’s.
If the city kept its own police department, Ehlers determined the budget would not be balanced. The city’s tax levy would be $760,000 over the state-mandated levy limit.
Alderwoman Cheri Enters voted to oppose the action. The police services issue will be added to the Common Council meeting agenda for Monday, Nov. 2.
The city’s budget public hearing is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 9.
Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Ralph Ramirez will hold a one-hour session at 10 a.m. Friday, about the two direct -egislation petitions filed to pre-empt the Common Council from moving forward on the sheriff 'scontract without a supermajority vote and a public referendum.
