What do you think about roundabouts?

June 29, 2009

They are cropping up more and more in our area, in Okauchee, the Wales area, Town of Lisbon and, probably the most controversial place, downtown Oconomowoc. What do you think about roundabouts? Have they made driving easier, safer and more energy efficient or are they confusing and a source of driving anxiety every time you make your way through one? Should we build more or bulldoze the ones we have? Let us know your opinions.

As Clint Eastwood, always said in "Rawhide, "Round 'em up, and head'em Out"!!!!!!!

Build more! Love them! The fuel we save by not idling at a stop and go light makes a big difference. The only problem I've encountered so far with the one I use every is that people use their directionals far less than normal. That is a boon.

The downtown Oconomowoc roundabout was poorly designed. It should be fixed by making the feeders and the roundabout single lanes. How many accidents have happend since the roundabout was installed, compared to before the roundabout was installed?

I love round abouts, but notice many people still stop or are not 100% sure of how to handle them!

They suck big time. I've been thru most of them in the area and in the Fox Valley. You usually wind up stopping to let the other traffic thru..just like at a regular intersection. Its like bumper cars. They are being forced upon us the the goofs in Madison and Washington. They have an application, just not here. The biggest problem is that they are being forced into areas in which there isn't enough room to support an adaquate radius in which to drive thru ( like Hwy 74 & Town Line ). This is another one of those expensive fads that come and go over time. You have to remember the old saying...."He who does the hitting, usually does the paying".

If traffic is light, they are an excellent way to keep traffic moving without the wasted gas waiting at stop lights. When traffic is heavy, they are a real scramble and I am surprised that there aren't many crashes as a result.

Save energy? Twenty street lights to reduce problems. Moorland and 43 New Berlin backs up traffic and more accidents in a year then ~4 years with old system. Ok, they say only fender benders in roundabout. Sure, they will be on I-43 with cars going 65. Save some more energy with extra snow removal too. See how much I love them. Been told not a problem with roundabout, we the people just need training. Maybe make the roundabout larger in diameter the a postage stamp.

Get rid of them. You never know if the guy coming around will turn or keep coming thru, so I stop anyway. What's the point.. unless no one is coming.

I like them, but find many people don't know how to address/drive them and so in the long run defeat the purpose.

I prefer roundabouts to stop lights or stop signs. When traffic is light you can sail right through without stopping. When traffic is heavy, the backup is less and crossing the intersection is speedier. More assertive driving decisions are required for roundabouts, but as people get used to them they will be more appreciated.

Roundabouts are a perfect example of why government can't ever make ends meet and they always need more tax dollars. How much money has the state and local governments spent on these nuisances in the last 5 years? Enough already!

I like them. Once people understand what they are and how to use them, traffic flow is enhanced significantly. However, additional education is needed. People need to understand which lane to be in as they enter, traverse and exit. People need to use their directional turn signals. People need to be courteous. People need to be cautious. Educate them and build more.

Unsafe at best, especially in Oconomowoc. The design engineer agreed that the center circles are small & are designed so that big trucks have to ride the edge with their wheels. They are created to discourage truck traffic. Does Sawyer Rd & I-94 need 4 roundabouts to navigate past empty fields?

These small ones that you have here are stupid. I'm from New Jersey where we have bigger ones and they are easier to maneuver but no one likes circles (as I call them). Some civil engineer must have liked that chapter in the textbook.

As long as they are not overused they are fine and seem to work. The idea though of building about five of them along Hwy C in Delafield is ridiculous.

Roundabouts are great, but most people need to return to driving school to learn how to use them correctly.

I love them but do find there are people who don't know how to drive them and come to a complete stop. They know how to use them in England. I love the 2 lane one on 164 - it's awesome. i think some of them are difficult for semi-truck drivers but overall they make traveling to work a whole lot easier - especially on 164 - no more long lines at the stop sign.

at first I did not like them, but I see that they really seem to keep the traffic moving and I am getting used to them.... Except last night when it was iced over, that was a real round-about....

I think the round abouts being used in our area are insuficiently designed to accomodate the size of our vehicles and our inclement weather! I think they will become a thing of the past...Just a passing fad in roadway engineering for WI! At least I hope so!

I think round-a-bouts are exrtremely dangerous and have no business being apart of our road system. They originate in Europe where cars are small and towns are even smaller. They serve a purpose of slowing traffic down due to lack of room to navigate safely and I suppose they also eliminate the need for a 4 way traffic light to be installed. But truth be known, putting them on any State hwy. such as Hwy. 18 in Wales, Wi. is just plain foolish. That road is meant for constant moving traffic and then you have this circle to go around, all the while people are not sure how to get into the local Pick and Save store that has an entrance directly related to the round-a-bout. Did someone some where think these idiototic things were supposed to be beneficial to us all, or did they get paid a kickback from some one? Can someone please tell me the benefit of these things??

I agree they are confusing and a source of driving anxiety. Especially the one in Wales which is right before a traffic signal and you have seconds to figure out which lane you need to be in for your next maneuver. Leave what is there, remove when they detoriate, don't put in anymore.

What the DOT and city planners have failed to realize is that roundabouts, or rotaries, are not the answer to every problematic intersection. Those that are at exits of interstates or highways are the worst. The one at 43 & Moreland causes backups on the freeway and requires police interaction. Those who design them should be required to drive through them during peak traffic time on a daily basis.

I like the roundabout, and I do believe the traffiic flows better with it there, but I also believe it was a waste of $$$ to put it in. If you have the decision to put in a stop light or put in a roundabout, then maybe a roundabout makes sense. However, to rip out a traffic light to put in a round about just doesn't make fiscal sense to me.

They're great! I was first exposed to them in Europe. They are a bit intimidating at first, but keep traffic flowing in a reasonable, controlled manner.
