Charles Otto Jensen

Charles Otto Jensen, 87, passed away peacefully at the Shorehaven Health and Rehabilitation Center in Oconomowoc, WI, on Saturday, July 21, 2012. We know there was a grand celebration in heaven as he reunited with his wife Lois who preceded him in death in 2010.

Chuck was born on April 24, 1925, in West Allis, WI, to Otto and Clara Jensen. He grew up in West Allis and also spent many weekends and summer days in Hartland at his grandparent Mathisen's farm. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1943 when he was a senior in high school. He took flight radio classes for C46 and C47 planes and was in the 9th Troop Carrier Squadron based on Kauai, Hawaii. He flew over various Pacific islands picking up and delivering supplies during the war.

Shortly after getting discharged from the Army, Chuck met the love of his life, Lois Hasslinger. They married after a two year courtship on May 15, 1948, and settled in Hartland, WI. He worked in Hartland for a short time before being employed by the Butler Bin Company in Waukesha. He started out as a blueprint boy, became a draftsman in the engineering department, then manager of the engineering purchasing department, and eventually retired as control manager of the company in 1980.

He and Lois raised five children with great love, and the determination to pass on their faith and commitment to serving others. Chuck and Lois were both active members of St. Anskar's Episcopal Church in Hartland, and Chuck spent countless hours volunteering at the local food pantry in his retirement years. After Lois died he continued to faithfully attend Bible study at Shorehaven and was a regular at Sunday morning chapel.

Chuck pursued numerous creative interests during retirement including leather working, wood working, and bee keeping. He and Lois also kept a large garden and raised chickens for a short while, and operated Jensen's Torvehal (Danish for "farm market") where they sold eggs and fresh vegetables that they raised themselves. They also enjoyed baking bread together, and in 1981 printed a cookbook of original bread and garden recipes.

In the summer of 1959 Chuck and Lois went to Washington Island in Door County for the first time to visit their good friends Bob and Kay Carr. Immediately they contracted "Island fever." From then on they would bring their growing family to the Island for summer vacations and stolen weekends. Their summer cabin became a place to truly relax and enjoy time with family and friends. Maplewood, Little Lake, is not quite the same without their good-natured presence.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois, and brothers Ken and Bob. He is survived by his daughters Barb (Mike) O'Connell, Pat (Bill) Schutz, both of Washington Island, Kris (Jim) McGarigle of Merrill, WI, sons Charlie Jensen of Portage, MI, and Gerry (Barb) Jensen of Shell Lake, WI. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and his special friend Ruth. He was a loving and kind husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, July 28, at St. Anskar's Episcopal Church, N48W31340 Hill Road, Hartland, WI, 53029. Visitation begins at 9 a.m., service at 10:00, with a light lunch to follow. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Anskar's,

The family would especially like to thank the staff at Shorehaven and the Adult Day Center for their exceptional care of Chuck during the past two years. The staff, along with the residents of Chuck's household, welcomed him into their family and helped him adjust to life without his beloved Lois. He was content, had a purpose in life, and companionship. As Chuck would say, "I had a good life."
