Reporter earns national newspaper award
SNA judges name Reporter best small weekly of the year
The Lake Country Reporter was named the 2011 Newspaper of the Year by the Suburban Newspapers of America on Friday.
In judging of newspapers across the country, the Reporter won in the classification for small nondaily newspapers. It is the first time the Reporter has earned this award.
Publisher Steve Lyles said that to be judged the best newspaper of its size in America is a significant achievement.
"This is an incredible honor and tribute to our dedicated teams in all departments," Lyles said. "The staff works diligently to stay connected with our communities, and it shows in their work. Team awards are paramount. We're elated."
In making their general excellence determination, the judges made note of a variety of different aspects of the twice-weekly newspaper, praising the regular in-depth features about community issues in addition to basic news coverage.
"Clean, easy-to-read with artistic, magazine-like cover layouts. Ads do not impede on content, good spacing between ads and text. Excellent use of infographics/photo illustrations," the judges noted.
Scott Peterson, editor-in-chief, said the award was validation for the extra effort the staff puts in to making sure the Reporter is always newsy and with a hand at the pulse of the community.
"I think the secret to the Lake Country Reporter, and all of our papers, is to be one with the communities we serve. We try to reflect the most interesting people, stories, images and news of our community," he said. "It's so rewarding when you can hit that sweet spot of having talented people put out something the community embraces. It's an even a bigger thrill for our staff to be recognized by our peers in the newspaper business on top of that. Our team works so hard and deserves the accolades."
