Planners expected to OK Delafield Super Walmart

City of Delafield — The transformation of the 20-year-old Walmart building on Heritage and Hillside drives into a Super Walmart is expected to begin early in 2010 and may take about a year.

"You are going to see a transition in the building from the inside out," said Lisa Nelson, senior public relations manager.

Most store operations would continue during remodeling of existing facilities and construction of a new addition that would expand the store from about 90,500 square feet to nearly 116,000.

When the super store is completed it will include a full-service grocery store along with other improvements in the store's inventory and services.

"The refreshening and expansion of this store will incorporate feedback we have been getting from our customers. The features will be clean, open, and bright, and feature wider aisles, lower shelves and give our customers the shopping experience and low prices they are looking for," Nelson added.

In addition to adding about 20,000 square feet onto the end of the building, most of the inside and much of the outside of the building would be "refreshed" to bring the facilities up to new Walmart standards, according to Nelson.

The Common Council was expected to approve the project at its Dec. 21 meeting. The Plan Commission recommended approval last week after months of negotiations with Walmart officials and local engineering firms and consultants.

Much of those discussions focused on the proposed configuration of a new entrance onto the site from Hillside Drive.

The new driveway is intended to serve large semi trailers arriving and loading or unloading on existing docks located near the garden center.

The new entrance from Hillside Road is expected to reduce the truck traffic on Heritage.

"Truck traffic today is not ideal, but what we are going to do on the site will improve circulation and separate truck traffic from pedestrians and customers," Nelson explained.

City officials said they anticipated there would at least two additional semi trailer trucks loading or unloading on the site daily.

The commission and Walmart planners and designers reached an agreement last week on a driveway opening of about 56 feet to be located on the eastern boundary of the property.

The building was constructed in 1991 and has limited space in which it can be expanded. There had been ongoing discussions between the city and Walmart officials during the past decade regarding how the appearance of the parking lot and facade of the building could be improved and whether the lawn and garden center on the west of the building would be enclosed.

But the corporation decided to expand the building rather than abandon it because it is located in a highly successful retail area, according to Nelson.

Revenues at Walmarts across the county have reportedly increased because more consumers are seeking lower-priced goods and merchandise because of the economic recession.
