Silver Streak covers more than 45K miles in 2009

President: Service couldn't happen without volunteers

A local service that gives residents a little lift when they need it continues to be successful. Silver Streak Inc. of Oconomowoc recently reported that in 2009, it took 10,455 riders to destinations covering 45,205 miles.

Silver Streak is a nonprofit transportation service for seniors and the disabled. It offers transport to disabled people of any age throughout the City of Oconomowoc, recently adding Aurora Medical Center and Lake Country Landing in Summit as destinations.

Silver Streak Board President the Rev. Stephen Welch of Oconomowoc United Church of Christ, who has been involved with the organization since its 1991 inception, said the success in large part goes to the volunteers who man the phones to set up resident pickup.

"What makes Silver Streak distinctive and I think is the key to our longevity, are our volunteer dispatchers and Wilkinson Manor, which donates space for our office," Welch said. In 2009, volunteers logged 1,558 hours helping to coordinate rides.

Welch said for the most part, Silver Streak continues to be in high demand because of Oconomowoc's large senior population, but also grew a bit recently because others have chosen to get rid of their vehicles and insurance for economical reasons since the service exists.

Welch said Silver Streak conducts an annual survey for its clients and 2009's feedback included favorable comments.

Silver Streak partners with Waukesha County in that residents can also sign up for rides through the county, and the service receives annual funding from the county to help pay insurance. "The city has also been very generous to help keep this affordable," Welch added.

He also said Silver Streak has received funding from Waukesha County Community Development Block Grants and also got help from the Oconomowoc Foundation.

With no plans to curb the business, Welch said the organization will continue to listen to its clients and seek funding to help the local transportation service.

Silver Streak operates from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cost of a ride is $4.50 one way; however coupons are available for purchase for $3.50 each. Call Silver Streak at (262) 567-6404 to schedule transportation or for more information.
