Waukesha County Police Chiefs Association offers groups a helping hand

Thanks to the efforts of the Waukesha County Police Chiefs' Association several community organizations will receive donations to continue their good works.

The Waukesha County Police Chiefs Association has disbursed a total of $12,850 raised from its annual fall golf outing.

"This is our 27th year of the annual golf outing. It's the one charity event we do every year," explained City of Oconomowoc Police Chief Dave Beguhn.

"Usually we have between 136 and 144 golfers participate," he added.

Due to successful solicitation of corporate sponsorships, the program has gotten stronger in recent years.

"I have been a part of this for seven years, and we've raised considerable funds since 2004," said Village of Chenequa Chief Bob Douglas.

Douglas said they stepped up efforts and as a result, proceeds from the event jumped from approximately $3,000 to between $9,000 and $13,000 annually.

Beguhn said the association decides as a group where the funds will be donated.

"Basically, we prefer to stay with local charities that affect our county and law enforcement," Beguhn said.

This year, eight organizations were selected.

Waukesha County Technical College law-enforcement scholarships ($1,000): "Two $500 scholarships will be given for students in the criminal justice program," Beguhn said.

Waukesha County Crime Stoppers ($500): "This is for the program administered through the District Attorney's Office," he said. The program pays cash rewards to anonymous citizens who give information regarding a person or persons responsible for a given crime.

Special Olympics Wisconsin ($250): "Law enforcement has always been a big supporter of Special Olympics," the chief noted.

Waukesha County chaplains $1,000: "Every September they put on a memorial service during National Law Enforcement Week," Begun explained. These these funds will help defray the costs of that service.

The Women's Center of Waukesha County $1,000: "This is to support women in need of support with domestic situations," Beguhn said.

The Caring Place $400: This group is a nonprofit in the City of Waukesha and helps people with physical or other disabilities

Yell and Tell Program $250: "This program was started in the Milwaukee area and expanded to some of the schools out here to help keep children safe. It teaches children to yell and get others attention if approached by a stranger, and to tell an adult about it," Beguhn explained.

Law Enforcement Administrative Professionals (LEAP) Scholarship (2) $450: "Offers training support for most of the clerical assistants," the chief said.

Waukesha County Child Advocacy Center Task Force, which was awarded $8,000. "They support law enforcement on a daily basis. They have nurses on staff and support children who are victims of abuse and assault. This is where children are taken for forensic interviews," Beguhn said.

"Law enforcement is trying to do its part to support charities that are important to Waukesha County and we're doing what we can," he added.
