Yule Feed Families food drive hits third highest mark ever

Well, it's not a record, but it's still the third-highest giving ever for the Yule Feed Families food drive, and that is a blessing for the four food pantries in Lake Country and the families they serve.

Although checks were still trickling in, by the close of the drive last week, a total of $47.290 was collected, the third-highest total ever since the holiday campaign kicked off in 1991, trailing only $95,510 and $53,886 in 2011 and 2010.

Over the life of the annual drives, the giving to Yule Feed Families totaled $468,402 to help the North Lake, Kettle Moraine, Pewaukee and Hartland food pantries.

"The generosity of the Lake Country community never fails to amaze me. People don't realize that people as close as your own neighborhood could be the ones in need. The pantries fill the most basic of need, to make sure no one goes home hungry," said Scott Peterson, drive chairman. "We are grateful to all of those who gave in amounts large and small."

This past week, giving again was led by Lake Country Rotary, which co-sponsors the drive with the Lake Country Reporter. At its meeting, the club donated 131 groceries and contributed $6,128 by passing the hat. That donation was paced by a pledge of $5,000 by longtime Lake Country businessman Richard Bertrand and his wife, Karen.

The Rotary club and Lake Country Reporter each have agreed to pay $2,000 to the drive as part of the challenge.

The Rotary donation was not the only big contribution this past week. A total of $15,596 came in, the biggest week of the drive, which kicked off on Thanksgiving.

Leading donors this past week include an anonymous gift of $5,000 by a Pewaukee couple, a $1,500 donation by Keith Winters of Pewaukee, $500 from O'Neill Engineered Systems of Menomonee Falls, $363 from Michael and Suzanne Matyas of Hartland and $250 each from John Lang of Hartland, David Lauer of Pewaukee and Timothy Kappeler of Hartland. Plus, there were many donors who gave $100 or less.

(Our apologies for including a wrong first name in last week's story. It was Jim and Kris Ordway who gave $1,000.)
