Food drive starts with a trickle
If Yule Feed Families were a stream, it might be tamer than the Bark River at this stage of the game - more of a brook.
The 22nd annual food drive, which benefits four local food pantries, got off to a slow start from its Thanksgiving kickoff.
The good news is that donations are already coming in to the annual challenge drive put on by the Lake Country Rotary and Lake Country Reporter. Already, $285 in contributions have arrived. Pair that with the match from the club and newspaper and you have total giving of $484.50 so far.
That's not a bad start, but a long way off from the record-shattering total giving of $95,510 achieved last year. Reaching that milestone by the deadline for the 2012 drive on Dec. 20 might be a struggle, but with the North Lake, Pewaukee, Kettle Moraine and Hartland food pantries reporting record demand, it's worth striving for.
The largest donation in the first week of the drive came from Virginia Hayssen for $100, followed by a check for $75 from Penny Williams of Pewaukee. Any donation, large or small matters.
Here's how the drive works. For every monetary donation given, Lake Country Rotary and Lake Country Reporter will match 70 cents per $1, up to a total of $2,000 each for the club and the newspaper. Grocery donations are matched at 40 cents per item. Checks can be made out to the individual pantries or to Lake Country Foundation, a tax-deductible partner of Lake Country Rotary. The deadline for giving is 5 p.m. Dec. 20 Checks or grocery donations can be sent to Lake Country Publications, 810 Cardinal Lane, Suite 210, Hartland, 53029.
Some of the greatest food needs are nonperishable goods, including pasta, rice, canned goods (fruits, vegetables, tuna), sauces, soups, peanut butter, jelly and seasonal foods.
Let's see if we can get this brook to at least a stream for week No. 2 in the Yule Feed Families drive.
