Hartland man charged in 3 sex assaults

An 18-year-old Hartland man has sexually assaulted at least three teenage girls, according to charges filed Nov. 28 in Waukesha County Circuit Court.

The criminal complaint shows three teens as the victims in these attacks, dating back to August 2011.

A Village of Hartland police officer received two reports from Waukesha County Health and Human Services on Nov. 2 concerning a possible sexual assault in Hartland on Oct. 29, 2012.

According to the criminal complaint, the first victim was assaulted at the man's residence near Market Lane on Oct. 29. The girl told police the man tried to "cuddle" with her, but she refused and tried to move to a different seat in the room. As she began walking away, the man reportedly pulled down her pants, pulled her backward, put his hands inside her pants and underwear, fondled her and began kissing her.

The complaint said the young woman "kept telling the defendant no, but he would not listen to her" and she was at no point kissing him back. The man ultimately raped her, according to the complaint.

The girl later learned that another girl had also been sexually assaulted by the same man, the complaint said. The Department of Health and Human Services reported that assault took place in August. She was reportedly at a friend's house on Manchester Lane where she and the man had been drinking and became intoxicated. While the two were alone, the complaint said, he pushed her "to continue to drink alcohol despite being intoxicated" and then asked her to have sex with him. The complaint states that she refused, but the man forced himself on her and had sexual intercourse with her without her consent.

The complaint also says that police learned about a third victim, 15, who had been dating the man since 2011. The young woman told police that she would sometimes drink alcohol and pass out or fall asleep. She would sometimes wake to find her pants pulled down or to find the man having sexual intercourse with her, the complaint said. When she would confront him about having sexual intercourse with her while she was unconscious, or ask him to stop, he would tell her to "let me finish" or say "you're my girlfriend; I can do whatever I want to," according to the complaint.

When questioned by police, the complaint says the man first said he was a virgin. He also stopped the interview at one point and requested an attorney but continued to make statements without being asked questions, according to the complaint. He also reportedly told police that they couldn't prove anything.

He has been charged with one count of second-degree sexual assault of an intoxicated victim and two counts of third-degree sexual assault. If convicted, he could face up to 60 years in jail and up to $150,000 in fines. He's currently being held at the Waukesha County Jail under $20,000 bond.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 10. In the meantime, he is under court order not to have any contact with any of the victims and he is not to have any third parties contact the victims, either.
