Mom charged in stabbing death of 10-week-old
Town of Oconomowoc resident Dana Hooper, 32, charged in the stabbing death of her 10-week-old daughter, was recently granted video or telephone contact with her other two children.
She is still being held in Waukesha County Jail on a $1 million bond. She has a motion hearing on Jan. 11 could face life imprisonment for the murder charges after the incident this fall.
Her husband, Kevin Hooper, 33, was charged with failing to report his daughter's death. He is out on a $10,000 cash bond.
As a condition of his release, Kevin Hooper is prohibited from discussing the case with his wife. They are allowed to discuss issues relating to their two other children and financial issues.
After the fatal stabbing, Kevin Hooper took his wife to Rogers Memorial Hospital and checked her in for psychiatric help. He allegedly made no mention of the murdered baby at that time. It was not until hours later when Dana Hooper told hospital staff she had killed her daughter that authorities were alerted.
Failure to report the death of a child is a Class I felony; Kevin Hooper could face a $10,000 fine and 3 ½ years in prison if convicted.
Kevin Hooper pleaded not guilty in October; his next court date is Jan. 7.
Town of Oconomowoc police officers found the lifeless child in the Hooper home after Rogers Memorial Hospital employees alerted the authorities. They allegedly found the infant wrapped in a blanket and placed inside of a hamper within a pack 'n play.
Dana Hooper was charged with first-degree intentional homicide after she allegedly stabbed their 10-week-old daughter six or seven times. According to the criminal complaint, Dana Hooper told police that she heard voices in her head, telling her to kill the child.
Dana Hooper reportedly told police that she had trouble remembering what all of the voices said, but she remembered them saying they were going to kill her, that she should kill herself and that she should kill the baby. She also told detectives that the voice that told her to kill the baby was very calm and she thought that "maybe it was God," according to the criminal complaint.
In October, Dana Hooper entered a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. A third mental evaluation has been ordered for her. Dr. Deborah Collins has most recently submitted letters to the court requesting a 30-day extension on the return of the report.
