Lighting, sound improved in bigger PHS auditorium

Occupying the space now housed by the fine arts spaces, Pewaukee High School's former auditorium seated just 440 people. That has now doubled with the new auditorium, which seats 750 people. There's improved acoustics, better lighting, more seating, new stage and orchestra pit, as well as a state-of-the-art sound system. There are also costume storage areas, dressing rooms and stage build-up areas.

Around the corner from the auditorium is a newly improved choir room with storage space, practice rooms and a large ensemble room. There is also a new recording system (for tracking student progress, preparing for concerts or making audition CDs) and a new music library filing system.

The band room, too, is much larger, with more practice rooms and storage space. The angled walls, in conjunction with the acoustical panels, make the most out of student practice.

Students really love it.

"This year I am enrolled in AP (Advance Placement) studio art and symphonic band - the high school's highest ensemble … I am also a part of jazz combo and brass choir - smaller ensembles that practice outside of class to prepare for competitions," said senior Katherine Kepprath. "I am a part of these programs because I am passionate about art and music. Through the music program I have had the opportunity to meet incredible teachers and some of my best friends. Being in these programs, since they aren't age-specific, has allowed me to broaden my social circle and interact with students older and younger than me. I'm so thankful for the new spaces, and sad that I only get to use them for one year," said senior Katherine Knepprath.

Student band and choir performances will be arranged during the open house on Sunday, Dec. 9. You can check out the auditorium the day before that, on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the free show by Streetlife with Warren Wiegratz.

Of course, the community is also welcome to attend the winter choir concert from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 13 at the high school.

The School District also plans to host the Asa Clark Middle School musical "Annie" from Jan. 17-19, and the highschoolers plan to perform the play "Aida" from Feb. 21-23. The PHS Friends of the Fine Arts is also planning its Pewaukee's Got Talent, a variety show fundraiser, in the auditorium on Jan. 5.

Upcoming shows

Dec. 13: Winter choir concert

Jan. 5: Pewaukee's Got Talent

Jan. 17-19: "Annie," by Asa Clark Middle School

Feb. 21-23: "Aida," by high school students
