Mix It Up helps kids find new friends, combats bullying
The building projects added a concession stand and expanded the Pewaukee High School cafeteria by 150-200 seats. "It's funny but every time I talk to the kids, they say that they love the new, round tables. In a time where we think teenagers are always on their phones or online, I find it just neat that the kids really just want to sit down and talk face-to-face," said Superintendent JoAnn Sternke.
She's not exaggerating, either. Mix It Up is coming back to Pewaukee High School on Dec. 12 for the second time.
It's a day the students organized where they commit to sitting at different lunch tables to meet new friends and combat bullies or cliques. So far, about 140 students have signed up. Assistant Principal Danielle Bosanec said it's great to teach social responsibilities and stop bullying.
"It's student-driven," Bosanec said, "The students came to us and said 'we want things to be different. We want to do something different.' "
ABC (Anti-Bullying Club) initiated Mix It Up and had no trouble getting other student groups involved. Sisters Club, which also sponsored the event in October last year, was also joined by the Key Club, National Honor Society, Student Senate and the Leadership Club. The Graphics Art Club designed the lime green T-shirts for the club, too.
Mix It Up organizer junior John Hennig said that many students go through the different schools, K-12, with the same friends the entire time, so it's hard for some people to break those barriers and meet new people.
"My personal thing is, if I can get one person to make just one or two new friends - that's everything," Hennig said.
