Serial bank robber gets 65 months in jail

Serial bank robber, Michael J. Scott, 37, from Beaver Dam plead guilty to a three-month robbery spree and has been sentenced in federal court to 65 months in prison, according to the Associated Press.

Scott is convicted of robbing 10 banks, two of which were in Lake Country.

The Lake Country Reporter previously wrote that, according to a federal indictment, Scott began his string of robberies on April 23, when he made off with more than $2,000 from a bank in Kenosha. He struck again on May 5 in West Bend and on eight subsequent occasions, culminating in the July 13 robbery that led to his arrest.

He allegedly robbed the Associated Bank at 1456 Summit Ave., Oconomowoc and the Chase Bank at 524 Genesee Ave. in Delafield on June 27 and July 3 respectively. In the Associate Bank robbery, he got away with $2,525. In Delafield, prosecutors allege he stole $2,185. All told, authorities say he stole more than $28,000.

Scott typically wore a baseball cap and sunglasses during the robberies, during which he passed notes to bank tellers demanding money. He did not display a weapon at the banks in Delafield and Oconomowoc, and fled on foot both times.

He was eventually arrested at Milwaukee gas station after robbing a Germantown bank on July 13. He was held in jail in Washington County before going before a federal court. The Associated Press reported that, citing concerns about prison overcrowding, U.S. District Judge J.P. Stadtmueller gave Scott a sentence at the lower end of his advisory sentencing guideline range. Federal prosecutors argued that Scott should have received a longer sentence, because of the serious nature of the crimes and the trauma suffered by the bank tellers who were robbed.
