Gallagher is Pewaukee's citizen of the year

Longtime member of Positively Pewaukee honored

When Pat Gallagher moved to the Pewaukee area in 1995 it did not take her long to become involved in the community.

The following year she helped launch Positively Pewaukee, the nonprofit organization designed to promote the downtown area. Two years later she joined the Pewaukee Kiwanis.

Gallagher's efforts and involvement in the Pewaukee community was recognized Feb. 3 when the Pewaukee Chamber of Commerce named her the Citizen of the Year.

"I was totally surprised by the nomination," Gallagher said Tuesday. Gallagher said she learned she was nominated in November. Gallagher, a Village of Pewaukee resident and mother of two adult daughters, said she was one of the founding members of Positively Pewaukee.

Gallagher was asked what she was most proud of regarding the work of Positively Pewaukee.

"The events in the community and what they have done for the downtown," she said.

"I am so thankful for being a part of the Pewaukee community and being able to contribute my time through volunteering to giving back to Pewaukee and the organizations working to help those in need," she said.

"I have always thought of Pewaukee as a family community that have people and businesses willing to help support in so many events that are held throughout the year," Gallagher said.

"I joined the Pewaukee Kiwanis in 1998 and have been involved in many fundraisers throughout the years. As chairperson of the Pewaukee Kiwanis Beach Party for the past seven years, I have learned firsthand what it takes to put on an event and also feel the rewards of success in donating our profits to so many local charities," she said.

Regarding the future, Gallagher plans to continue her involvement in the Pewaukee area.

"I hope to continue to help our community for years to come," she said.

Business of the Year

Also recognized were the owners of one of the iconic businesses in the Pewaukee area.

Jeanine and Richard Knutson, owners of the 5-O'Clock Club in the City of Pewaukee, received the Business of the Year award.

"It's surprising and an honor," said Jeanine Knutson. The restaurant off Prospect Avenue has been in family for 83 years. "It's pretty amazing," she said of the award.

The Knutsons have been involved in the restaurant for 46 years, and now their sons are involved, making it a fourth-generation family business.

How long will it go on?

"As long as we can," Jeanine Knutson said. "It's been a lot of hard work over the years."

Knutson said the restaurant occupies a lot of their time so they don't have time to join various civic organizations, but that doesn't mean they don't support the community. The Knutsons contribute funds to many organizations, including the schools, Pewaukee Area Historical Society, the July Fourth fireworks and the Pewaukee Lake Water Ski Club.
