Warrant in fraud
An arrest warrant has been issued for a 26-year-old Georgia woman charged last week with defrauding $5,000 from the Village of Hartland Landmark Credit Union.
Alena C. Stewart was charged Thursday, Feb. 8, in Waukesha County and Washington County circuit courts with two counts of felony fraud against a financial institution. She appeared in Washington County court Feb. 8 and was released on a $5,000 signature cash bond. She was ordered by Judge James K. Muehlbauer to remain in Wisconsin and to not have contact with any Landmark credit unions.
According to the criminal complaint:
Stewart was taken into custody by the West Bend Police Department for allegedly attempting to defraud the Landmark Credit Union at 1719 S. Main St. in West Bend. Hartland Police were told by West Bend police that Stewart was also suspected of defrauding the Landmark Credit Union at 810 Cardinal Lane in Hartland on Feb. 6.
Hartland police viewed video surveillance at the credit union from Feb. 6. Stewart identified herself to a bank teller as Tamia Ruiz with an Arizona driver's license and obtained about $5,000 through a fraudulent advance on a credit card, according to the complaint.
Stewart told police she purchased the false credit card and driver's license from a woman in Akron, Ohio, on Feb. 4. After getting the funds from the credit union, she transferred half the funds to a prepaid debit card and made some purchases at Walmart, the complaint said.
If convicted, Stewart could face up to six years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
