Arrowhead reaches another level
The show continued Friday night for the undefeated and No. 1 ranked Arrowhead football team, and the show AHS put on against visiting Germantown in a Level 2 WIAA Division 1 playoff game was clearly its best performance of the season.
Turning in perhaps the best first half of football in school history, the Warhawks scored on all seven of their first-half possessions, rolled to a 47-0 lead at the intermission and eventually won the game by a lopsided 47-7 score. The lone Germantown touchdown came in the final minutes of the game.
“Our guys are good, they always come out ready to play and that’s what we did tonight,” said second year Arrowhead coach Greg Malling. “The kids on offense are very explosive and I’m not surprised how well the defense is playing either. You just can’t divide any of the three phases of the game. When one’s cooking it makes it a lot easier on the other two. The offense plays so good because the defense makes it easy for us. When we play defense we can take more shots. All the kids are working together right now.”
And that just might be the understatement of the year. At least that’s how it looked Friday.
Offensively, the Warhawks (10-0) had seven possessions in the first half and scored on all seven, and quickly. Those drives consisted of three plays, six plays, one play, three plays, seven plays, four plays and nine plays. Those seven touchdowns came in a total elapsed time of just 8:54. AHS had 357 total yards in the first half.
Bit the defense wasn't about to be outdone.
Germantown, who came into the game averaging 27 points per game came away with just 16 total yards on 23 plays in the first half.
“We have a lot of pride in the way we play defense,” said junior defensive tackle Billy Hirschfeld. “Our offense does so well that we want to show them that we can play too. Everyone works together on this team. We’re just one big happy family. We’re not the offense or defense. We’re just a team.”
After forcing Germantown to punt on the game’s first series, the Warhawks needed just three plays to find the end zone as senior running back Dom Todarello scored on a 22-yard run. Alec May added the extra point and Arrowhead was off and rolling at 7-0.
Arrowhead scored three more times in the first period to lead 27-0 after the opening quarter. Todarello scored on a 33-yard run, Ricky Finco caught a 36-yard TD pass from Todarello and senior quarterback Brady Kelliher tossed a perfect 57-yard scoring strike to Finco, who caught six passes for the night for a 185 yards.
Leading 27-0 after the first quarter, Arrowhead hit pay dirt three more times in the second period. Getting those touchdowns were Ty Jager on a 21-yard pass form Kelliher, Finco on a 65-yard pass play and Kelliher on a 1-yard run.
“With the guys we have on offense, it’s like we can score just about any time,” said senior receiver Kenny Finco. “We’ve just got so many weapons. You never know who’s going to score. And the guys in the line are playing well and the defense has been outstanding. Those guys on defense get the job done every week. They give us good field position a lot of the times. We’re having a lot of fun.”
