Seidel surges to two titles
When Hartland's Molly Seidel began her freshman year at University Lake School, all she really wanted to do was try cross country for the first time in the fall and then participate in the sport of track in the spring.
The speedy 14-year-old had no idea how quickly she would become a staple in Lake Country record books.
Last fall, Seidel became the first-ever state cross country champion from ULS. That set her up perfectly to win two more state titles this past weekend at the WIAA Division 3 state track and field meet at Memorial Stadium at UW-La Crosse.
Entered in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs, Seidel lived up to the top seed times and came away with state titles in both races.
She became the first individual double winner in Lake Country-area history.
Seidel her best race ever in Friday's 1,600 meters, winning the race with a time of 5:02.92, a personal best by six seconds.
She won the race by just over a second, as Carli Kronstedt of Pittsville took second at 5:03.78 after a late charge put her ahead briefly.
"I felt good going into the race," Seidel said. "I felt good after the first two laps, and then I decided to go a little faster in the final two laps. I pushed it a little harder and knew I was going to have enough left at the end. I was pretty nervous though going in that race. Being at the state track meet for the first time, I really didn't know what to expect. Things worked out well."
She just missed setting the state record in the 1,600, which stands at 5:01.31.
On Saturday, Seidel competed in the 3,200, her specialty. She not only won the race at 10:49.98, but set a new state record in the process. The former Division 3 mark was 10:52.23, set by Margaret Davis of Brookwood in 1981.
"I knew my splits were faster than what I had been running, so I was getting a little excited as the race went on," Seidel said. "I ran on the lead all the way. I had a lot of confidence during the race, and I felt good. It was nice to set the state record."
Her time in the 3,200 was her best ever by a whopping 22 seconds.
"I never even dreamed anything like this was going to happen when I started school this year," Seidel added. "I had never run a single cross country race prior to the season starting. I had run some races in track but didn't even think about winning any state championships. It's been a lot of fun."
